I work in a special ed preschool class. Some of our kids are autistic and some are there for speech/language delays. The kids in our class are amazing. All of us who work there love seeing their progress. Last year I cried when I heard a 4 year old finally say his first word!
When you get a group of preschoolers together, there are bound to be moments that are just plain hilarious! Despite their disabilities, all of our kids have the ability to laugh and they keep us entertained whether the mean to or not!
So, we just got a new boy who is definitely autistic. He is non-verbal so far but has shown interest in many things. We are still learning how best to engage him and we are trying to draw him into the classroom routines. Today during free play time, the other kids were playing in the block area. The new boy was sitting off to the side looking at his favorite book. I was sitting in the block area but made sure to keep tabs on our new guy. One moment, I looked at him and he was happily reading his Pooh book. I swear not 30 seconds later, I looked back to see him standing in the middle of the room buck naked from the waist down! He had removed his shoes, socks, pants and diaper and was dancing around without a care in the world! I was so astounded that I couldn't get a word out and just pointed at him and grunted. When the other teachers saw him, we all just started to crack up. It was an act of pure innocence and exhuberance. We decided it probably means that he's comfortable enough in the classroom to make himself right at home. Apparently, this is a frequent occurance at home and the babysitter's house too.
Needless to say, we quickly got him dressed and discouraged such behavior for the rest of the day. Everytime I heard him rip open the velcro on his shoe, I was up in a flash! We are glad that he feels so comfortable in our room. We just wish he would express it in a different way. It was pretty funny, though. Now, if only we can get him to hold a paint brush...
