Funny/Humorous Response?

We weee at a party yesterday with people we see no more than once a year. One of the guest was not in attendance last year so its been a couple of years since many of us had seen him. Another guest, who had not seen him in a while asked how his 90 year old mother was. The response; "Oh she is just fine now but she died a year and a half ago". Those of us who know him got a chuckle out of it because he jokes all of the time, but the other guest was sort of tongue tied.

Well, there are certainly better ways to convey that piece of information. It sounds like one of those comments intended to shock and embarrass the listeners. Kinda leaves you with a little queasiness in the gut.

That's funny!! I'm sure his mother would think it was funny too since he is known for joking. Some people use joking and their sense of humor to get through difficult situations. I'm sure your friend didn't intend to embarrass the person who asked the question.

It definitely isn't aimed at the person asking the question; it wouldn't have offended the speaker's mother; the speaker is known for joking around. I wouldn't have taken offense.
