I do some public relations side work, and today, during dinner, I got a call on my cell phone that my hubby said was the number of my client (he works for them too). I answered the phone, and just heard someone rummaging around. I said, "hello, hello!" but nobody answered. I know he was there, but I'm sure he doesn't know he called (in my family, we call these "butt calls" :lmao: -- you sit on your phone or move the wrong way, and press one of your speed dial buttons with your rear end). About 1/2 an hour later, it rang again, and I didn't answer, so the call went to voice mail -- it was him again, same thing, rummaging in drawers or whatever, no voice.

Should I mention it to him? I don't want to embarrass him, but I don't want to get these calls either, not that they're a big deal, but he's the type that would look on his phone, see that he called me and wonder why I haven't called him back and answered whatever question he thinks he asked me. He's a nice guy, and I enjoy working with him, but this is silly.

Ahhh we call it a "pocket dial". I'd let him know. Maybe he might like to start using the locking mechanism on his phone so it won't happen anymore :thumbsup2

I have gotten them from my DH a couple of times...one of them was just Friday actually. Come to think of it...I never told him!! haha

I call people back when that happens. I just say that I got a call from them and there wasn't anyone on the other end, so I just want to check to see if we had a bad connection.

I got one from my son in law as he was finishing up selling a nice property..got to hear him in action LOL.

I just tell the person that they butt dialed me...we laugh and it's no big deal. Nothing for anyone to be embarrassed about.

LOL sometimes it is a reason to be embarrassed . My best friend and her hubby had date night and I guess at some point date night ended up with her putting her phone on the bed and then a little while later they "butt" dialed me.

Took me a minute to figure out what the heck was happening , I quickly hung up . Had a good time teasing her the next day , and she now keeps her phone locked at all times. :rotfl::rotfl:

My dad used to butt call us all the time. It was funny at first, but when he'd call at 5:00 am, it got old fast. He got a flip style phone and they stopped.

Urgh, I do it all the time. It's really annoying too. When I do it, I call the first person in my phone book. So now, that number is to call my home phone number, that way I don't annoy anyone else when my butt calls someone :).

That's a good idea. :thumbsup2

When DH had a Blackberry, it would call the last person he called, which was usually me. Usually it was when he had the phone in the pocket with the keys and the keys pressed the right button.

I was expecting this to be about "booty calls"!:rotfl:

Butt dialing. We have 20 crews in the field on a daily basis, get 3 or 4 of those calls a week. No way to know who, unless you recognize a voice if they are talking and aren't too muffled, and, we don't have caller ID.
My phone has a button that turns off all outside buttons so you can put it in your pocket and it won't do anything.

On a similar note, I've been called by a 15 month old boy. I could hear daddy trying to retrieve his phone from the toddler while he screamed his head off into my ear!!! :rotfl2: I HAD to call back and fill them in on this one. It was pretty funny.

All of these sound like everyday calls I get at work... at 9-1-1.

We frequently hear the beeping of a cash register and sounds of someone rummaging through her purse.

Ever wanted to hear what a phone sounds like from inside a washing machine or clothes dryer? I have.

Plenty of babies playing with phones manage to call 9-1-1. I "talk to" more babies every day than people calling with actual emergencies. Seriously. No joke.

And every once in a while we do pick up a call from a couple's "date night". Given that those sounds might be confused with sounds of a struggle or sounds of distress we must call them back to be sure everthing is ok.

At our 9-1-1 center we get about 8 times as many hang ups, wrong numbers and pocket dials as real emergency calls.

PLEASE lock your keypads and keep phones away from small children. If the phone has battery power it can still call 9-1-1 even if the phone no longer has service.

A coworker of mine got butt dialed by her husband when he got hit by a car while working a construction job. She heard all of the panicked bystanders checking to see if he was breathing & the sirens. Poor thing almost ended up in the ambulance herself with a heart attack. I wasnt at work that day, but from what I hear her cell phone rang, she answered and turned a whitish blue color and then started screaming. Her hubby was airlifted to the hospital and is fine now, but he had a lot of broken bones.

9-1-1 operators here are required to call back every hang up and pocket dial until they talk to someone, even if it takes days. Trust me, I know because we MAKE a lot of mistaken 9-1-1 calls at work because we have to dial 9 to get an outside line, and the first 2 digits of all our crews cell phones start with 919. But the the caller ID comes up with our switchboard number, which has an entirely different first three digits than the direct dial lines inside the building. The switch board is only open 9 to 5 M-F and we are a 24/7 business. So a misdial at 5:30 pm Friday night to 9-1-1, will force the 9-1-1 operator to call every hour until they get an answer, which won't be until 9 am Monday morning. And then, of course, the PBX operator has no way of telling where the call came from inside our building, with 120 lines.

Thank you for putting up with those calls in order to be there for the real callers. The one time I felt the need to call 911, I sure felt silly and unsure but turns out it was a real emergency. (A car had stalled on the 91 freeway and was hit by another car, who drove away. The stalled car was across two lanes and it was late at night without any lights on. I hope I helped to avoid a crash by calling.)

This happened to us at an inservice last week. There were about 200 people in the meeting. After lunch the director stood up at the mic. with a cop beside him the cop said that 911 has received about 30call from the same number. they kept calling the number back and getting voice mail. They could hear alot of people in the background and figured it was coming from our inservice.
