Hopefully, participation in the posts doesn't cause anyone at work to have to start be thinking about another aspect of the EI program...LOL.

I've been working here for almost 18 years and luckily I've never had to use the EI program except for the births of my two children. The first was 6 months--went by way too fast. the second (and MommaBear I was 40) was a year and by month 10 I was ready to come back to work. Now that she's almost 3 I'd love to be able to stay home with her because she's so interesting and fun to be around. However, we pay our insurances and really don't think twice about it until we use it and then we thank our lucky stars.

I don't feel that you are paying me to stay home when I've been paying for someone else for well over 20 years now. It's just the way things are:

Maybe we should start a thread about paying Canada Pension premiums knowing that when we get to retirement there won't be any money to pay us because there won't be enough children in the workplace to support us. I guess it's a good thing we get a year off to have our kids.

Maxie and Susan--Ontario,

Don't let the posters on the CB get you down! I lurk over here on the Canadian Board because I lived in Calgary for a little over a year in the early 90's and still have many friends there. What no one in the other debate will tell you is that we do have unemployment insurance here that our employer and we pay into. It will pay up to six months worth of benifits but I think the max you can draw is about $800 per month. Plus you can only draw it based on the circumstances of how you left your job and your former employer can protest the payments if they want to. Being American and having lived and worked in Canada and meeting so many Canadians I understand that there is a fundamental difference in our views and beliefs. There is not a mother in America who would not love to stay home with their newborns for a year. But the reality here is you are lucky to get six weeks. Plus you only get paid for those six weeks to the extent you have vacation and sick leave benifits accrued. Another difference in attitude is toward vacation. In the company I work for (a major Oil Company) I cannot recall anyone I know taking a vacation that lasted more than a week. It's just not done. However when I lived in Calgary it was not unusual for someone to go on holiday for a full month. Many companies started you with 4 to six weeks vacation there, while here you get two weeks for your first five years and you have to work a full year before you can take any at all. I am not saying one system is better than the other just different. Having been there I can understand and appreciate the cultural differences between our countries.

OT someone mentioned in another thread about being disappointed in the Candian Pavillion and the fact that Le Ceelier did not serve a certain kind of beer. Well add me to the list because I could not get a Big Rock when I ate there.

Ok, tried to resist and couldn't. Went and read it. Unbelievable arrogance IMHO. Couldn't resist posting either.

brerrabbit very nicely put and yes there are many differences between the US and Canada one large one being our helthcare systems and out taxes. We have no problem paying into our social programs wherer many americans would die if they had to pay for some of the things we get to pay for.

ITA ::yes:: I couldn't help I posted. I can't believe there are so many ignorant people. They give all Americans a bad name. It is painted as a "free" handout. Some people need to open their ears and minds a little more.

I for one thank my lucky stars every day when I read about a woman who has to go back to work 6 weeks after giving birth that I will never have to be in that situation.

I finally had to post as well. No one had mentioned that we need for women to have more babies in order to maintain our population base. I can't believe the one poster who is so adamant that she doesn't want this in her country and I think she is a stay at home Mom. Seems more like, "I can't have it so why should anyone else." mentality. So sorry that she doesn't have anything else to worry about in her life. She is one lucky lady and doesn't realize it.

Have a magical, taxed to the hilt, Canadian day everyone!!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

I love it still going strong and so is the National healthcare debate it is another good one I every now and then throw my 2 cents into LOL......

OK Darren, stop telling me about other "hot topics" .... I've already accomplished nothing the past 2 days at work 'cause I keep going to the thread. And then I had this one open too 'cause it was hilarious that the Cdns had a "parallel thread" going :p

Sorry ML but as another likend it to a car accident you can never just drive past you always have to slow down and look LOL.

You know what I just thought of..

I haven't mentioned it over there that my employer topped me up to 90% for 6 months of my one year when I was off on mat leave.

What do you think that would do to the thread??

I had already mentioned that this sometimes happens in a much earlier post (seems like ages ago now).

Someone's really going to have to put a "thread-killer" over there. I'm not going to get any of my work done....LOL

I tried to kill it with the "let's all get along point" but they just ignored what I said about maintaining our population and have gone off on something else again.

I asked if the posters who were so against it are against it because it would increase their premiums. They've only answered that the company pays the premiums. So, like I suspected they don't work where they have to pay these premiums and they are just jealous.

Ahhh!! I too have to get back to work before I may need Employment Insurance.

Have a great evening everyone!!

I've tried to explain to my SIL who is from Nevada our health system. She had to go back to work 6 weeks after my nephew was born. I give up, she finally told me, as she is sitting in my living room, in Canada, having flown here free, a gift from us, that she "hates Canada" I asked her 'why', she couldn't give me an answer. Her Canadian husband sat there and shook his head. Ah well, such is life.

Susan--Ontario: Saw your second attempt to kill the discussion thread over "there". Nice try but it keeps going, and going, and going....LOL

I've promised myself that I will not look into the National Healthcare or Maternity Leave thread again. They are way too distracting!

Yes but I am sure you will Damo LOL. you can't help but go look at them if for niothing else other than the entertainment factor you get from seeing some of the stupid remarks from some people on it like the last couple remarks about the mat leave somone has now stated that if the employer offered it they would take it boy because that makes it all that much different LOL.
