Funniest comments you've overheard in WDW

I remember a few years ago I was in WDW during the month of December when Buffalo got a major snow storm, however it did not hit Toronto. When I asked my Dad how is that possible, he said the same thing you mentioned about how Toronto has Lake Ontario to moderatre the temperature.
More specifically, Toronto has Lake Ontario to help moderate the temperature, and furthermore it's on the northern shore, the relevancy of which will become apparent in a moment.

Buffalo is on the eastern shore of Lake Erie. Why does that matter? Because Lake Erie is (compared to the other great lakes) quite shallow. There isn't nearly as much actual water in there to help moderate temperatures. So little, in fact, that it freezes over by mid-January most years. When the top of the lake is frozen, it's more like a giant flat piece of land, and it no longer has the same moderating effect on temps.

Lake Ontario, on the other hand, is very deep by comparison. Some ice forms on it near the shorelines where it's shallower, but the majority of the lake never freezes over in the winter time. That makes a big difference.

As far as snowfall goes, Buffalo tends to get hit really hard early in the season. This is because the prevailing weather patterns move from west to east. When a cold air mass moves over Lake Erie from west to east, it picks up a lot of moisture off of the (not yet frozen) lake and dumps it on Buffalo. A few years ago Buffalo got over 7 feet of snow in the course of two days because of this -- right around Christmas time. Once Lake Erie froze later in the season, Buffalo got far less snow, but of course those cold air masses still moved in making it pretty cold.

Toronto is on the north shore of Ontario, and so doesn't get anywhere near as much snow. Cold air masses move east over Lake Ontario and pick up moisture, but since Toronto is north of the lake most of that moisture ends up falling to the south and west of it. Basically, over upstate NY, where I live. :)

Again, sorry for the sidetrack. Somebody post a funny Disney story!

We recently moved from the Detroit area to Green Bay. Of course being in Detroit, no one thinks much of anything of going to Canada (Windsor) and if you asked most people what Canada was known for, the answer would probably be the Casinos! Getting Canadian change is common and no one would ever make the comments you guys are saying. But here in Green Bay, Canada is like, well, a foreign country or something!:rotfl: I've yet to met anyone whose actually visited there, and they find it fascinating that I have (we used to camp there many times each summer). Never found it that much different from Michigan, other than having to do quick math calculations for currency, distance, and temperature!

Anyways, a Disney related story at least to try to get this thread back on tangent! I was getting a perm today and talking to the stylist about going to Disney later this summer. She asked about cost since she said she'd really like to take a trip there someday. I explained the MYW concept and that it was negligibly more expensive to go for 10 days than for four days. I explained that this was because Disney expects you to go for 4 days, but then wants to keep you there, rather than visiting the other parks in Orlando. She then said "Oh, yeah, like Epcot!" Guess she needs to do a bit more research before planning that Disney trip!

I think the stereotypes happen everywhere. All I have to do is say y'all once and people assume I'm uneducated, unless they're from the south. I've learned to let it "be water off a duck's back!"

Hey, y'all is just quaint - at least here in Snellville, where everybody is somebody, about 15 miles from you! :rotfl2: I dropped that one in SoCal a lot (okay, as much as usual) last week and didn't hang around to see anyone's expressions. Although there's probably not a Spanish equivalent so it most likely didn't compute. Can you believe they don't have GRAPE JELLY or STEAK BISCUITS at their McD's out there? WEIRD. :confused3

And YAWN on all the Canada/northern states stuff (and the southern drawls, which I exacerbated) -- can we get back to some funny comments?

Oh, don't worry about it. I didn't intend to pick on you. Yours just happened to be the the last post on the thread when I finished reading it. Had I finished reading it yesterday or tomorrow I probably would have corrected somebody else. :)

We seem to be opposites. I tend not to correct grammar in face-to-face meetings. It's more likely I'll do it on a message board, because I'm used to correcting written text. (I work as an editor and technical writer.)

Back to our previously scheduled program...

Just out of curiousity, why is 'me' the correct usage? I really thought that it should be 'and I.' What's the language rule used to decide?

ETA: Yes, I am a teacher. However, I've been in kindergarten so long that I've forgotten a lot of the 'upper grades' rules! Yikes! I'm moving to 3rd next year. Guess it's time to get reaquainted with grammar!

From what I understand, you have to be able to take out the "my brother" or whatever part and have it still make sense. So you wouldn't say "My grandma introduced I", you say "My grandma introduced me". I'm sure there's a ton of rules that just aren't coming to me at the moment, but that's the gist of it as far as I've learned lol.

Yup, you're right.

Here's the original statement: "My grandma introduced my brother and I to an elderly gentleman..."

Correct usage depends on whether the self-reference ("me" or "I") is the subject or object of the sentence. If it's the subject of the sentence, you use "I." If it's the object, you use "me." The easiest way to figure it out is to remove "my brother and." Does the statement still make sense?

"My grandma introduced I to an elderly gentleman..."

Nope! Sounds ridiculous now, because "I" is being used as the object, and should only be used as the subject. It's wrong in the original sentence as well but is harder to catch because "my brother and" masks the error. It should be:

"My grandma introduced me to an elderly gentleman..."

However, if the situation were different -- if the self-reference is the subject of the sentence -- then "I" is correct.

"My brother and I introduced grandma to an elderly gentleman..."

Let's use the same test to check it -- we'll remove "My brother and.".

"I introduced grandma to an elderly gentleman..."

Yup, it works. :)

As I understand it you only use 'I' in 'Mom introduced my Brother and I to..' if you would use it if talking about you only ie. 'Mom introduced I to..' which is wrong tou would say 'Mon introduced me to...' so me is the correct usage.

You are correct Sir.

Hello fellow Snellvillian  I've gone some places around town and said "y'all" and gotten strange looks.... never at Wally-World though... using "y'all" there is perfectly acceptable! :rotfl:

"my brother and me", not "I"

It's Ross Gellar!! :lmao:

I once passed a man telling what appeared to be his grandson that he had a picture of himself with Walt in front of Spaceship Earth. Anyone else wonder how he pulled that off???

Maybe they used a mascot?? :rotfl2:

Anyway people- please can we get back to more funny stories?? The whole Canada stuff is zzzzzzzzzz.

I'm not sure if this counts, but as a CM YEARS ago, I actually had a guest ask me what time the 3:00pm parade was.:rolleyes1
It was tough to answer that one! I was warned it may happen and it DID!:lmao:

Just to continue the "people who are clueless about Canada" tangent. ;) My law teacher was telling me about a couple she met that was convinced they were going skiing in Windsor, ON in July... Nevermind Windsor's south of Detroit, and the fact that they have no mountains (at least that I was aware of in the 4 years I lived there). But no, they were going to go skiing. :rolleyes1

And now back to your regularly scheduled thread! :rotfl:

Just wanted to jump in and say hi from a Windsorite, not very often I see my city mentioned in message boards, lol!

Last summer, my mom and I were staying at a hotel off sight and we were waiting for our cab to take us to Animal Kingdom. There was another family sitting next to us waiting for a cab as well asked where they were headed and the mom said, "We are going to Epcot today and tomorrow we are going to Disney World." :rotfl2:

It took a lot for me not to break out in laughter.

I just got back from Disney World and I heard lots of funny stuff on the buses. Unfortunately, I forgot them. I do remember one thing that I thought was strange. We stayed at Pop Century and to go up the stairs for each building (we were in the '70s, so we climbed the stairs with an 8-track) you have to pass by some bushes. I don't know what kind they are but they don't smell nice. So, I heard a boy tell his mother "It stinks here." She told him it didn't matter. The boy kept insisting that "It stinks here" and the mother kept saying that it didn't matter. So, finally the boy says "It doesn't matter."
I know I heard funnier stuff than that and I wish I could remember. The funniest things are heard on the buses, I think.

They were probably boxwoods. They are really pretty, but they smell like the old home-perms my mom used to use.

Alright, I gotta tell ya, I'm somebody too!  I lived in Grayson for the majority of my life, and graduated from South Gwinnett! Course, I teach in the North G. cluster now, so I've moved on up, but I visit Snellville at least once a week as my parents are still there and I help out!

Hey, y'all, this really is a small world!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Another one???? Wow, we're taking over the world!

See previous post from me, but it's cool that there are so many of us represented here, Snelliville is getting bigger, but it doesn't seem that big!

And I agree, I use y'all all the time! I just avoid typing it, and I watch how much I use it in front of my yankee relatives to avoid the conversations. . . :rotfl:
