Last year we did a GREAT scavenger hunt party for my daughter at the mall. It was a ton of fun for the girls and pretty inexpensive really! BUT now I have to follow that up this year!;) So, I am looking for some fun but fairly budget friendly ideas! Any out there?! I'm thinking maybe 5 friends?

My sister just did a sleep over party (but for 8 and 9 year olds) She found inexpensive pillowcases that she let the kids decorate with paint/paint pens. She gave the girls pedicures. Homemade birthday cake and pizza for dinner ($5 pizzas - maybe dominos??) She was going to bake cupakes and let the girls decorate them, but ran out of time. It was a movie theme and at "bedtime" (around 10) she started a movie with popcorn and movie style candy. Everyone was on the couch or in sleeping bags and by midnight over half of the girls were asleep! Have fun planning - once you come up with a theme, the rest of the planning should be easy!

That's funny you said that about the pillow cases, I just put in an offer for some on ebay! :) She wants to decorate flip flops too. I think the pizza is a great idea, maybe get a fruit platter....cake of course. Keep the ideas coming!!!

Hey just a heads up that Old Navy is having their $1 flip flop sale tomorrow.
With my DD we did the fluffy flip flops- I cut strips of fleece in different colors- then the girls tied a bunch of them onto their flip flops. Made them all fluffy. Like these but fluffier.

The girls loved them.

Do you have a theme? Like a spa party the above poster mentioned- Walmart sells nail polish pens by Sally Hansen- they let you decorate on top of regular polish- so you can do fancy designs

My daughter and her friends love these.

So you can do nails, pedicures, do hair ect...

Have fun!

In November we had a cruise themed BD party. I made really fun invitations that invited them on an overnight cruise. Embarkation at 5:00 PM etc.

While the girls were arriving we did the sail away party. I loaded some fun tropical music and some of the things that are played on the DCL sail away party. Then we had dinner. I did a sandwich buffet (turkey, ham, buns, chips, veggie tray). Then they went to the "bowling alley" on deck 1 (Wii bowling in the basement TV room). Then they all went to the movie (also on deck 1 LOL!).

I then served a midnight dessert buffet (at 9:00). I did several different desserts cut into snack sized portions.

Two things that I didn't do because I just was out of time (it was the Friday before Thanksgiving and we were leaving town the next day...WHAT was I thinking). Anyway, we were going to do the fluffy flip flops and I was going to take a picture of each girl with our daughter as they "boarded" the ship. Then we were going to do a really inexpensive (25 cents plus the picture) craft. Cover two cardboard drink coasters from a restaurant with tropical scrapbooking paper. Punch two holes on one side of each coaster (at the top and at the bottom). Tie the two coasters together by threading ribbon through the holes and tying a bow. Then mount the photo on one side on a coordinating color of cardstock. Mount a cute saying on the other side.

The next morning we had a breakfast buffet with different kinds of bagels (cut in 1/2 and then 1/2 again), 2 kinds of flavored cream cheese, fresh fruit, oj, and cinnamon rolls from IKEA that were cut in 1/2. The rolls are delish and very inexpensive.

Overall it was a super fun evening!

Forgot two things...I bought tropical paper plates etc. at Dollar Tree. Second, the whole spa idea would work well with this theme.

I did a gift basket for each girl that was our big expense. It all came from the $1 section at Target. Cute square pink basket, lotion, lip gloss, bamboo scented stick things, and a fun notebook. The party ended up being semi-expensive because I bought quite a few things that were convenience foods. I was short on time and our daughter was turning 13 which is a big birthday, plus the last party we had for her was when she turned 8 so she was long overdue for a fun BD party!

Nail nite is fun here a cheap way to do nail art. Paint the nail with nail polish let dry the use the paint that is water color in the little pots for the nail art let dry & use a top coat. that way if they make a mistake with the nail art you can wipe it off with water & not mess up the base coat. Get some cheap thin paint brushes, get design ideas online.

the cruise idea is really cool.

I was just talking to my youngest DD tonight about having a slumber party for her 12th birthday. I am going to keep it pretty simple, we have a jacuzzi, will do cupcakes, make smoothis, virgin pina coladas, dvd's maybe look for some crafts on oriental trading company, they have great stuff at a good price. I know very well most of the girls that are going to be here there are 5 just from our neighborhood that all always sepnd the night anyway. They really just entertain themselves, we also have roc, band and world tour so they LOVE doint that.

A lot of parents around here in the DFW area are having hotel sleep overs for their DD's birthdays. The girls get to enjoy the pool and hotel amenities. They usually book two rooms, and have a female adult in each room with the girls. Order pizza for dinner, and breakfast is a free buffet. It's a big hit here! :cool1:

Makeover party. Dollar Store for make-up and use your closet, some finds from a thrift shop, or the girls' own clothes for a photo shoot (around the house or in the community if you want to drive them around to some funn areas) and you can print them or copy a disk for the girls to take home. When you are done with the clothes you can donate them back to the thrift store, a clothing closet, or school/church drama department.

Making their own pizzas, cupcakes, cakes, etc.

Decorating pillowcases, t-shirts, bookbags, photo frames (then add a pic of all the girls).

Make their own movie or video through the entire night to document all the fun (you could edit later and share the dvd with the other girls).

Anyone you know have a karoke machine? Vidoe the girls dressed up and singing.

Good old fashion board games???

This is popular here, as well. DD12 has been to hotel parties the last two weekends.

Don't really have any budget ideas. I always seem to go overboard. We're taking DD and two friends on a weekend trip and Jonas Brothers Concert for her 13th.

A photo scavenger hunt is fun, but you have to have more than one group and extra help to transport groups. You break into teams and each team has a digital camera (many kids have them). There are clues to the different locations or items that the group needs to have included in their picture...for example a "port-a-potty", a school, a local landmark, or a government building...the possibilities are endless. Each group travels around and takes silly pictures of the group with the item or in front of the location. For instance, the clue (they need to be pretty obvious clues) leads them to a police station, the group stages a fake arrest scene in the photo or the clue is that they need to have sunglasses in their picture, the group goes to a local store and everyone strikes a silly pose while wearing a pair of sunglasses. It's a lot of fun, takes up a lot of time, and you have a wonderful keepsake of the event. Other than the cost of gas, it is a no-cost activity.

The other thing that is fun, but again you have to have some help. If you have family that is close and that want to help you out, have a progressive dinner. Each part of the meal is at a different home. You have an appetizer at one house, salad/bread at the next house, main meal at the next, and then back to your house for dessert. Again...a lot of fun, takes up a lot of time, and a new twist on feeding your guests.

Happy planning! :goodvibes

American Idol Party: You can make up t-shirts that say American Idol and make up CD's with the songs on them. A friend of mine did this for her daughter. My girls always play American idol and then bad american idol where they sing bad, make up who they are and laugh like crazy.

I had a party two years ago - Amazing Race. It was awesome.

Last year we did a GREAT scavenger hunt party for my daughter at the mall. It was a ton of fun for the girls and pretty inexpensive really!

Can I ask for details of what you did? It sounds like fun!!

All the ideas on here are good. I did a sleepover party for DD when she was 9 and vowed never again. (Late night drama--ugh) But maybe it would be better now. DD will turn 12 this year, and lots of these ideas sound neat.

A friend is taking a group of girls to a cosmetology school for around $5 each. They'll have nails, hair and makeup done by the students. From there they are eating at a local restaurant chain, then on to build a bear. Then they'll all sleep over at her house. She bought sugar cookie dough they'll bake and decorate either that night or the next day.

Instead of eating in a restaurant you could pick up a variety of items to make personal pizzas. For the "crust" you could use english muffins, toast, italian bread, pitas or flatbread. Then have all kinds of toppings with a couple unusual/new items they may never have had on pizza.

I had all the girls gather in the food court of the mall. I divided them into two groups (had them pick numbers) then gave them an envelope with $20 in it and a list of things to do or buy with different point values. ex. a napkin with a restaurant name was 1 pt. or bag from a store 1 pt. taking pictures in the kiosk in the mall worth 5 pts, but they had to use their $ so they had to pick and choose which ones that cost to do. Most points wins. I had a LOT of things listed for points. If they ran or were loud they had to stand still for 5 minutes, it was timed at 1 hr. for the hunt. We gathered in the food court (had my 21 yr. old babysitter with the other group) where I bought lunch for the girls, ate a large cookie that I got from Mrs. Fields in the mall and did presents. I also gave the girls a $10 for the winning team and $5 to the losing team to Claires. They all had fun going there and choosing their prizes. Oh also I split up the things they bought on the scavenger hunt between the girls to take home.

Any ?s just ask. The girls LOVED it, it wasn't super long and wasn't super expensive. And NO mess for me to pick up or house to get ready for the party! :)

Wow, you all are super party-planning moms! When I was a kid and had a sleepover birthday party, my mom took care of the food & the cake but then we were left to entertain ourselves for the night. Usually we did each others' hair & nails, watched a movie, and played "Truth or Dare." Then we'd play pranks on whoever fell asleep first - putting shaving cream on her hand & then tickling her nose, or putting toothpaste on her face, that kind of thing. I remember at my cousin's party one year we took the girl's clean underwear & bra out of her bag & put them in the freezer! :lmao: Not the most wholesome of party games, but we thought it was hilarious.

At my DDs sleep over we did a version of spin the bottle. I purchased several fun colors of nail polish, the girls sat in a circle and we would put a nail polish bottle in the center and spin. Who ever it pointe at had to paint one finger that color. The girls loved it!

Also in the minority, I have a ds11!

We have done a ton of sleepovers, I think the favorite to date was a "Star War:Clone Wars" themed one.

The activities included make your own yoda (or other aliens) out of modelling clay, find your Jedi name (you need the mom's maiden name), watching the show with movie-style treats (I set up a table like a concession stand, but with items portioned), and playing the Wii Clone Wars game. The kids had pizza and Star Wars themed cupcakes to eat. Party favors included action figures and stickers. Plus, they really entertained themselves with making up their own adventures with the action figures -- not necessarily playing with them as intended, but in my experience that's what boys do...
