For months now my nine year old daughter has been talking about wanting a "full body silicone baby with EcoFlex 20." I didn't pay much attention, thinking it was one of her many passing fancies. I just told her to wait and ask for it for Christmas. Well, she hasn't stopped talking about it. When we were at Disney World in July, the only thing she was interested in when we were in the gift shop was baby clothes for the baby doll she does not yet have. For her souvenir, she chose a Dumbo layette for an infant.

I finally decided that I ought to find out about these things since she has talked about nothing else since January. Using her iPad, she showed me a picture of the doll she wanted. It was $2,450. :scared::scared::scared:

Sooo.......

What alternatives are there for these types of dolls? DD wants one because she says it looks realistic, it feels realistic, she can bathe it, and she can "have something really special to take care of." I tried showing her some doll toys made of vinyl (she has about 15 baby dolls already) but she has little interest. She doesn't want any dolls with a soft body because she wants to bathe it. She wants one she can dress in real infant clothes (we have a bunch of those from her little sister). She wants one that looks like a real newborn- not an older baby or toddler. She wants one she can move the arms and legs.

What doll companies make realistic looking "silicone vinyl" (which I know is not real silicone) dolls that are meant to be toys? I can spend up to $150 or so. I have looked at Madame Alexander dolls, but those all say they are collector items for adults and not toys.

Any doll experts out there? I would love some help with this.

The doll your daughter wants is not a toy doll. I don't imagine there is a real life like infant doll that isn't going to cost a ton.

How about something like this? These are apparently the ones used by the crazy people that want to pretend their dolls are real children...pretty sure you can bathe them. (WARNING: Some of them look downright creepy to me. :scared: )

:scared1: No! Just no. That's more than creepy. Man, I don't even have words for that. Why did I look? :crazy2:

I have to say, I don't think I could cope with having a highly realistic baby doll in my home.

Many years ago, I saw what looked exactly like a young child throwing a dead baby down a slide (except that logic told me it couldn't possibly be what it looked like). Turned out it was one of those dolls.

If it belonged to one of my kids, I'd be legitimately worried that it'd come to life in the middle of the night and murder us all. :scared1:

My 8yo neighbor has a reborn doll - it's very realistic (creeps me out!) but she loves it. My 2yo is obsessed with it, whenever we go over there he makes a beeline for it and carries it around loving on it. Super cute. A few of her friends have them too - it's just a high end more realistic baby doll.

How about a "Real Care Baby"? Not sure how much it is but they are the babies used in schools and are programmable.

Sorry but these really look creepy.

These babies cry the same cry at various times, and only the programed response will make them stop. They are designed to annoy. And they do.

I have it from a pretty good authority that they are nothing like a real baby. (Not that any doll is. But these dolls claim "real care baby."

I know enough already not to look. There was a show about adults who have those dolls and believe they are truly their living babies, I was dumb enough to watch and get freaked out.

My husband had a lady sit across from him on a flight that had one. Said she had a stroller and car seat (yes, bought a plane ticket) for the baby. All he could feel was sorry for her ... and tried not to stare.
