I just assumed the reborn dolls were a therapy type thing. My friends mom was in late stage dementia and was very happy taking care of her 'baby'. It brought her peace and joy, I thought it was a beautiful thing.
I have a neighbor - an adult woman, no less! - who paid dearly for one of those dolls. It was intensely realistic-looking. When she first showed it to me I thought it was her niece or something, and started making funny faces at it and cooing at it. Then she (the woman) pretended to drop it . That was when she let me in on the fact that it was fake.
Okay, picture this: I have an elderly aunt that has made these dolls over the years and also collected more lines of these very expensive dolls...probably several hundred in her house. She lives all alone in the country and the dolls line shelves of walls and fill glass enclosed curios. Her bedroom only left room for her to squeeze into bed. She died late one night and people had to go into her home. Oh Lord!
