Man, it's a shock coming back over the Canadian border. Paid $2.79/gallon in Ohio, and the price just out of Windsor is $1.049/litre--which is $3.97 a gallon.

Mind you, it's almost worth it not to have to PREPAY for gas. In a country that's built on convenience, it's ridiculous to have to go into the station twice. Unless you American folks are all psychic...I never figured out how to know in advance how much a fill-up would cost. I don't understand pre-paying. I guess it prevents the gas-and-dashers...but license plate cameras do the same thing.

Hardly ever see people pay cash, mostly credit or debit cards. Pay at the pump. :thumbsup2

Yeah, that'd be great if I had a zip code. Most U.S. stations, particularly in the South, require you to enter a zip code before you pay by credit. Try entering the one zip code every Canadian knows--90210--and watch your Visa get eaten. Or bring that Visa in and give it to the attendant, thus violating your cardholder agreement and leaving yourself wide open to skimming, a.k.a. identity theft.
As for debit, that's a laugh. There are five machines on WDW property that accept my debit card, all of them at out-of-the-way resorts. Off-property is even dicier. Some gas stations are on my network. Most aren't. I've had people look at my debit card and ask what it was. Whereas maybe once every three years I'll find a Canadian retailer that doesn't accept debit.
Cash was really the only option--and as a Canadian I am acutely uncomfortable with carrying cash around. Canada could abolish cash entirely and I doubt many would notice, or care.

Sorry to go off like that. I had a wonderful time, but the whole money situation was a really stupid inconvenience. In a land supposedly built for convenience, it was very frustrating.

What part of the cardholder agreement do you violate? You can't hand your card to a cashier??????? Never ever heard that one before.

Maybe in Canada the self scan machines are the norm???

In the US, most retailers you still have to hand them the card and they scan it on their register. At restaurants, you hand the server the card and they go back in a corner and scan in the transaction.

However, I did go to a Red Lobster in Orlando once where the server brought me a hand held scanner so I could scan my credit card myself. First place I'd ever seen one like that.

Only once????? Oh we have to fix that.

They bring me that scanner and I tell em to take it back:sad2: its not my job to scan it out. The guy told me that he would get in trouble if we didn't use it, so I fixed that problem, I gave it to Kathy.:)

When you were there did you look for the Otters in the pond?

I was thinking that too. There is nothing in my cardmember agreement that says that I personally have to scan the card. Sounds kinda fishy...:confused3

I have never seen a credit card agreement that says "sure, you can give your card to a total stranger and let him hold on to it while you go out and pump your gas".

Mile Oak, the publishers of ALONG I-75, have been lobbying to get this fixed for four years now, without success. If I'm getting gas on credit in Canada, I go in already knowing what's going to be charged, hand the card to the attendant, and let him swipe it--it's within my sight the whole time. In the States, because I have to prepay, the attendant is left holding my card as collateral. Or something. Or maybe he'll just charge $75 to it--over twice what my tank will take dead empty--and then refund me afterwards.

I've never seen one that says that you can't ;).

And I've never been asked to turn over the card while I pump my gas. :confused3

Oh, I see, Canada stations don't require you to prepay.

If a station doesn't have pay at the pump, I just give them an approximate figure, they run my card and the difference gets credited. It's not a big deal for me on the card I use.

I just hope that the price of gas doesn't go up enough that I have to use two different cards to fill up!! With pay at the pump, I would max out on their limit (50 or 75), then have to use a different card to finish filling up cause the security features wouldn't allow me to run the card at the same place that soon.
