has anyone rented the golf cart for the day at ft wilderness and what did you think? Was it easy to get around? We will be there in a week & I'm hoping it is a good experience & we don't have trouble finding our way. Also what would you recommend to make the ride scenic? I don't want to just ride along the highway where the busses go and not see any wildlife. Thanks for any tips.

As mentioned above, you'll get better answers from the camping board, but to answer some of your questions...

The buses do not go into the loops, they stay on the main roads (although calling those roads "highways" is a bit of a stretch). The loops are where all of the campsites and/or cabins are located and you will still have some traffic through there, but not as much. That said, FW is HUGE with the Outpost at one end, the Settlement at the other, and the Meadows Trading Post/pool/campfire area in the middle. So, it's easy to get turned around and not be sure where you are heading. I'd recommend grabbing a map.

I'm not sure what kind of wildlife you are looking for, we haven't seen too much in our trips.

Thanks. i will go to the campsite boards to gather up more information.

not just the kids, but also my self and my husband consider golf carting (or looping) around fort wilderness to be one of our favorite things to do on a WDW vacation. granted we only do this when we are actually staying at the camp ground, but if you were just hanging at the fort for a day, it would still be a fun low key good time. as the others stated, the functionality of having a golf cart at FW is that it can be a haul from your campsite to the nearest bath house, the park transportation (think boat docks) and various resort activities. you can generally get to those things by way of the central road thru the campground. however, the fun is in looping, driving your golf cart around your camping loop and so many others. a quiet relaxing ride checking out others camping set ups (some are awesome). the wild flowers and butterflies are beautiful. as for wildlife spying...there is no guarantee, but we always saw something worth seeing....deer in the brush, particularly on our way to the pool, one very brazen wild turkey who was also just roaming thru one of the loops, rabbits everywhere, the occasional elusive armadillo. back in the day (at least 15 years ago) when they had peacocks roaming the campgrounds you could see (and occasionally hear! they scream like a woman!) them everywhere. I missed them when we stayed there in 2014.

Our last trip down was the first time we actually rented a golf cart while here. We usually take our bikes to ride around the Fort but I, unfortunately, have developed a lung issue which now made the golf cart necessary. My husband in the past always said that he didn't think he would like using a gold cart. Well guess who fell in love with it..lol. We were lucky enough to be down here with our grandchildren and we all laugh about how they liked riding in the golf cart almost as much as going on the rides! While they are pricy, we felt we used our enough to (somewhat) get the value. We used it to ride to the marina at nite to see the fireworks, rode it up to the bus stop, over to the Trail's End, etc. There was even a few times the dog got a ride to the dog park..lol! My only complaint was that we wish Disney would make it more known what the rules are. We had a lady yell at us to get onto the sidewalks (which the Disney CM told us NOT to go. We also saw children who were much too young to be driving a cart behind the wheel. I would suggest getting one if you intend on spending some time at the Fort itself. If you are at the parks from morning to late night then it might not be worth it. Whatever you choose have a great time!

Thank you! We will be there for the day so I expect it will be a lot of fun. Thanks for your input!

. . . That said, FW is HUGE with the Outpost at one end, the Settlement at the other, and the Meadows Trading Post/pool/campfire area in the middle . . .

EXAMPLE:
From the Outpost (check-in) to The Settlement (HDDR and Trails End) , is approximately one-mile, as the crow flies.

We were down this past weekend and the first day we checked in they actually ran out of golf carts (which is very rare in the off season) so we had to bus it around the first day. I can def. say having to use the internal busses added to our travel time quite a bit. We waited 20-30 minutes the first day to catch a bus back to the Outpost right after we got there. Luckily we got put on the waiting list and the next day they had one available. We are full believers in using the golf carts at the Fort. Makes getting around so much easier plus you can go exploring. Half the fun of staying at the Fort is riding around and looking at how folks decorated their campsites (be sure to do it during the day and at night because it's a different experience both times.) You can call 407-824-2742 to reserve one ahead of time.

Thanks! We did rent one. Better to be sure!
