Anyone else love these boots? :goodvibes

My sister and I always wore them growing up. I remember them being fairly "expensive" even back then, but the quality was great, so it was a good value and we got many years use out of them. (We used to buy them in a small store that sold clogs and boots in Harvard Square if anyone else remembers it.)

So when I sensed that DD17 was moving away from Uggs and she asked for some classic leather boots for Christmas, naturally I thought of Frye. Needless to say, I was SHOCKED at how high the prices have gone, with some being in the $400-500 range! So I spent a few days searching around for a deal on some in a style she liked.

The best deal I found was at Zappos/6pm, where they had some on "clearance" that were discontinued styles and colors, etc. (Choices and sizes were limited, but I lucked out.) I did want to stick with Frye because I knew they would last a good long time if taken care of properly - but I wondered about others; I didn't want to spend that type of money and regret it if they fell apart, etc.

Anyway, I thought we could open up a discussion of women's boots, as, even though I'm all set right now, I was wondering if those who are more familiar with today's boot trends might share their knowledge with the rest of us.

Questions:

1) What brands of boots are known for quality and comfort?

2) Where do you like to buy them?

3) Where do you find discounts, if any are available?

4) Have you bought any boots that did NOT hold up well?

Thanks! Online shopping certainly has made this a lot easier than it used to be!

I have a pair of Frye boots I bought 6 years ago. I love them. They are holding up great, although they are a little scuffed but really its my fault for not taking better care of them.
I am a thrift store shopper and have found vintage Fryes . They are not quite the same quality they once were.
Totally worth the price if you can find a deal on them.

Other brands, I just look at Marshalls and TJs. You can usually find nice boots there for good prices.

I've seen some lucky brand boots that looked nice. I have no idea how they hold up though. TJs had a nice pair of Coach black leather boots that were really nice. Just plain with a small Coach logo embossed in the shaft, not obnoxious Cs all over them. I didn't buy them though ( it was hard not to). They seemed like really good quality, thick leather, nice stitching (and I'm not a Coach purse fan).

Wow, what a timely thread! I just started looking around at boots last night for myself. I am one of those people, while very aware of current trends, and appreciate them on others, can never justify the expense with 3 kiddos to clothe. I have been wearing the same style jean (AE Skinny Kick, discontinued, of course. grrrr) and Gap t shirts for about 4 years now. I really like the tunic, leggings/skinny jeans with leather boots look that is so popular now. I'm thinking about taking a chance and going for it (for once in my life)! I actually started following a company on FB called Grace and Lace who make boot socks and boot cuffs that are so cute and feminine. I've seen on their site a brand called Bed Stu. Nice boots on their website. My problem is I have large feet! Size 11 (hey, I'm 6ft tall, don't laugh! ;)) They usually don't look as cute in jumbo size, lol!

Anyway, I'll be following this thread to see what all you fashionable folks come up with!

I would check nordstromrack.com they have a lot of good brands for a lot cheaper than nordstrom does

I got my Frye boots last Christmas. I found them by chance on Macy's website and they were a discounted price and by chance the next day Macy's ran their friends and family sale with 25% off. I ended up paying a little over $200 but they are really nice well made boots that I see lasting for a while. I got a pair of Nine West boots the year prior and paid about $175 for them and this will probably be their last year.

Watch Macy's....mostly they are online but I have seen a pair or two that were probably an online return.

Any good leather boot suggestion for those with wide calves? Mine is 16 in and it challenging to get good ones that fit me with skinny jeans!

I've got wide feet and need a wide shaft. Frye doesn't do either. I've had good luck with leather Fitzwells from 6pm. It you watch their website, you can occasionally find them for $50 or so.

Thanks for all the feedback! Bitty, you made me chuckle - I have big feet, too. I will have to check out the boot socks and cuffs - I've never heard of them, but DD has and she said she'd like some. I am trying to figure out where my old Frye boots are. It's been so long since I wore them, they must be up in the attic somewhere. I bet they'll still be in good shape when I find them. I always oiled them and let them dry before I wore them and that went a long way to protecting them.

I could have sworn I saw some Frye boots for larger calves, let me see if I can find them again. If I can I will post link here. ETA here are some from Frye: http://www.thefryecompany.com/women-boots-wide-calf/l/106 (If you find ones you like you may be able to google the name and find them for less elsewhere.)

I found an online retailer that had a lot of nice boots that seemed well made, many with a country flare. (Some of the colorful ones are gorgeous!): http://www.countryoutfitter.com

Amazon occasionally has deals on Frye boots. I got a pair a few months ago for $130 that are now selling for $250!

Just an update - DD's Frye Boots arrived this weekend and she loved them. They are absolutely gorgeous and fit perfectly. :goodvibes They are no doubt going to last for many years. Now just waiting for the leather conditioner to arrive so we can prep them for wear. She would like to wear them now but since they're a Christmas present we told her she has to wait. :p (I ordered them early because I wanted there to be time to check for size and color, etc. and allow for return if necessary.) Happy with the purchase and got a great deal on them through 6pm.com, but did luck out as I got the last pair of boots in her size and color at just $179. The same exact boots are selling elsewhere for well over $300.

pea-n-me - Thanks for this post - I'm going to check that brand out. I've never heard of them before. I've had the same Dr. Marten boots for YEARS - since my single days, and DH and I have been married for 11 years! I think I did the math, and they are over 14 years old. The docs still look great, but are finally starting to hurt my heel/ankles after wearing them all day. Classic look, and the chunky, industrial look comes and goes - but Docs are always in style!

I was just thinking about getting another pair for myself and maybe a pair for DD. I thought if I break them in in Dec, I could wear them for our Disney/Universal trip in Late Jan/Early Feb. Now I'll compare Docs to Fryes.

Thx!

You might want to do a search on Dr. Martens before you buy new ones. I'm pretty sure they are made in China instead of England now and the quality isn't supposed to be the same.

Check out Solovair boots if you are interested in Dr. Marten quality. They are English made. They were somehow involved with Dr. Martens. Im not really sure on the details. I don't own a pair so I can't personally speak for their quality.

Our tj maxx has them.
