Wow, dinner looks really deliciuos, but it seems they put parmesan on everything that is not fish or sweet? Strange... Well and the salad looks like plain rocket to me I guess I would have felt the same as you about it. We even had it in our garden here at work and "had" to eat lots of it for several lunches.

The dress looks very lovely, the effort was worth it and am glad you took it for the Palo dinner!

That seems a little surprising to me also that they have the tables all set up and anyone can just walk in and have access to the place.

There might have been servers working setting up if we had gone in all the way.

Nice catch! Not being a wine person, I would not have had a clue there was anything unusual about this.

I think it is more the Disney/Pixar freaks who know about Lasseter also owning a vineyard.

I saw these along the wall on the right in your earlier picture and they looked very interesting to me. Glad you chose to focus on them and give a better view!

This does sound like it would be very interesting, but like you I would have also been confused about the length of the tour the way it was listed on The Navigator. Not sure I would have wanted to spend that much time either.

I learned my lesson - if I ever do something like this again, I will ask beforehand how long it is going to be.

Those were the prettiest ones though... I have more later on. The one thing all bathrooms had in common is that they were soooo clean.

I am sorry you had to keep going back but glad you got your DVC lanyard. I know I would have gone back multiple times myself.

It was more about that there was free stuff that I should get but did not get than that I thought it was so important to get the lanyards.

The heat, sunscreen, lotions and just general dirt being blown or tracked in makes it murky. The smaller the pool the harder it is to keep up with the use. I hope you found it clear the next morning.
Straws? blown in, tracked in or if they are clear hard to see when you are drinking in the pool.

I was hoping for your professional opinion on this and yes, it was clean the next day. And the straws were clear, that's how I discovered them when I was swimming around and hit them with my hands.

I gave up trying to tame my curls a few years ago. My hair is healthier now than when I was using the hair dryer every day. Still a mess but healthier.

I still need to use a hair drier in the winter - can't go out of the house with wet hair when it is freezing outside. But in summer it gets a vacation.

Twice in that last update I saw things in pictures that I thought I was going to be able to tell you something you didn't already know (the Lasseter wine and the Chihuly glass) and then you go and explain them in your narrative. Well, I should have known better.

Wow, the ship looks gorgeous...even those bathrooms.

The ship is truly beautiful - but not all bathrooms are as nice as the Palo one..

Maybe I mentioned it here already, or maybe it was Cynthia's TR, but I work with a guy who used to be an accountant on-board one of the Disney cruise ships. Seems like a great job, but I'm guessing that the time away from family got to him.

I am not sure whether I would enjoy working on a ship and have to see other people having a wonderful vacation while I am sitting in a tiny and stuffy office all day long... And being away from the family for a long time certainly must be difficult.

I read this last night on my phone but wanted to see the pictures on my laptop! Love the dress, just lovely and I love the Gatsby style necklace with it, such a lovely touch! Beautiful picture of you.

I love the excuse to dress up. It's sad really, not to have more places and reasons to dress up. Seattle is so incredibly casual, all my pretty dresses just hang in the closet being sad. I suppose if I went to high end charity benefits to donate money I don't have I could wear them but...not. I guess we need to go on another cruise!

Palo looks lovely, it is such a wonderful experience. It is interesting though as I think our servers, both times on both ships may also have been Croatian! Definitely on the Dream, not sure about the Wonder but I'll ask Jeff.

I love all your choices some of my very favorite foods, tuna, mushrooms, zambaglione...actually I think I ordered many of the same things! I agree about the antipasto, it was excellent. Lovely evening all around, including the illusionist. I know some folks felt the adult shows should be "more" adult than they were but I never had any issues or felt it was too safe/family oriented.

I am fortunate that needing one in the winter is a rarity here. Growing up a hair dryer was a daily habit in the winter or at least a heavy hat to get home after swim team practice.

I think it was even more than just half of the show.

Great job on the weight loss! It's something I'm still struggling with. I've had some health things going on and well weight loss tends to be one thing that can slow down. Hopefully with the right medications and supplements it will help... It stinks because I've never had problems losing weight before...

Everything you both ate at Palo looks amazing! Ok now I'm hungry...

We wanted to do that tour but it never fit in, I would not have been happy nor would have Jeff, had it gone on so much longer than advertised, or at least without the CM stopping and mentioning that it was supposed to end now but for those who are interested I am happy to keep going. Or something like that!

I would really recommend doing the tour if you get the chance - I think they have it on all the ships. I am not sure why there was this strange time element in our tour. I don't think it is common.

Well you need to come visit me then! Amazing chandelier at the Symphony Hall and an entire new exhibit at the Seattle Center. Actually you can find his stuff all over town, I love it!

So, is he based in Seattle? We actually totally bypassed Seattle on the way from Vancouver to Tacoma. I would have loved to see Seattle, but it did not work out. But I loved the whole area, we also did a day trip to Mount Baker. And I was lucky as I had brilliant summer weather all the time I was there - summer of 2003. Unfortunately that also led to some bad forest fires, Lake Louise was full of smoke... But Seattle and the Pacific North West is pretty high on my list of places I want to see. If I just could have a year long vacation...

I don't use lanyards so I am somewhat amused by the lengths you went to but didn't they give you the basic one at least to start?

There was no basic one at the beginning. I had first thought that I would not want a lanyard either, but I use one at work for my office key as I often wear dresses and skirts without pockets. I bought one at WWoHP in the Griffindor school colours (looks like a tie) and love it. It is so practical to not have to hold on to the key when I am walking around the building. Since I work in a public building I always have to lock my door when I leave my office. So I thought maybe it might be a good idea for the ship as well. And even though I often had a bag with me (tote bag during the day, a smaller purse for dinner), it was even practical as it was easier to locate the key in the tote bag with the whole lanyard attached. Made me less nervous about losing the card.

Ick! Very few people used the pool on our Wonder cruise (and those that did were all from the Northwest) but ICK! I will say on the Dream that pool was so crowded it might not have surprised me to see straws and the like. That is so rude, especially given that it's an adult only pool.

Overall we did not encounter a lot of rudeness on the ship and I am really not sure how those straws got in there. I could well imagine that they were blown in there. If you had a drink from the bar, they come without a lid (as compared to from the drink station) and I could see how they were being blown around the deck.

I found some of it contrived as well but agree with the split personality and that the good and entertaining did outweigh it the part that felt forced.

I never thought of the necklace as Gatsby style - it is a cheapish necklace that I picked up a few years ago when I started to make my work outfits look a bit more stylish by using necklaces. I hate wearing suits, so I started to go for skirt, nice top and elegant cardigan and long necklace. Since this one is black, it is so easy to combine. And when I was trying out jewellery, I thought it looked quite well with the dress. But you are right, it kind of makes the whole outfit look a bit like from the 20s or so. Which goes extremely well with the ship!! I need to investigate this a bit more before my next cruise, since I already wear my hair in the right length, maybe I can come up with an Gatsby inspired hairdo as well!

Germany is very casual, too. Or at least not dressy at all. Whenever I have been to the US I see people who are dressed for a night out to a level that is quite uncommon here. So the cruise was a welcome occassion for me as well. That would be another bonus of a longer cruise, too: more formal nights!!

Palo was truly excellent! and for 20 $ per person it is quite a deal. How funny that you had Croatian servers, too.

I wonder whether there will be fewer Croatians in the future. Croatia will become an EU member state on July 1st this year and with this Croatian nationals will be free to work in any EU member state. So maybe a well paid job in a high end restaurant in one of the Western European cities might be more appealing than working on a cruise ship for these people.

I wasn't disappointed that the show was not more "adult" in its nature, I was just a bit surprised why it was labelled at "adult" - but I guess that might just be so that people can enjoy the show in adult company. Just as there is nothing "adult" happening at the Cove Cafe.

Hm, well on the pasta and risotto the parmesan was quite fitting. And then I would never complain about cheese being added to anything (except desserts). Oh, and my steak had gorgonzola, no parmesan!

It is 20 $ extra per person. Which in my opinion is a good deal for the quality you are getting. It is much better than the dining room as they have their own kitchen and everything is prepared freshly. We also gave Sasha an additional tip. Supposedly part of the 20$ is to cover the Palo server tip, but since Sasha was truly so wonderful, we felt that he should get more.

I quality it was comparable to my best experiences at WDW signature restaurants. In service and ambiance it was far above any meal I ever had at WDW. The room is not at all crowded, it feels rather intimate. The service was very personal and attentive. I think in the real world the meal have been many times more expensive.

Yes, I guess that would have been the case. I was just surprised that no one else in that pool found them. I got in and within 5 minutes I had found two straws and had thrown them away.

Day 6 (cruise day 3)

Today was going to be a day in port  in Cozumel. Cozumel is an island just of the coast of the Yucatan peninsular.

We had huge difficulties deciding what we wanted to do in this port. Part of me felt that if I go to Mexico for the first time of my life, I ought to experience some of the culture there. Generally Mayan ruins would be something that interests me. But the thing is that Cozumel is an island, the nearest ruins in Tulum are a ferry ride (which takes about one hour) and a bus ride (another hour) away. So that 7-hour excursion to Tulum consists of 4 hours travelling time and three hours sightseeing. Not a good ratio in my book. Another thing that sounded really cool was the so called Secret River a river that runs through caves and you would walk and swim through it. However, this was only slightly closer to where we were  it included a 45 minute bus ride after the ferry.

We debated our options for quite a bit. And finally came back to the one excursion that had caught my eye when I first looked up the offerings Disney had. The Fury Catamaran Sail Snorkel and Beach Party. I like being on boats, it included some snorkeling and some time at a beach. And it included free drinks: water, soft drinks, margaritas and beer. I also had read a few reviews here on the DIS, which were all favorable. It said that the whole thing would be about 3 to 3.5 hours and the price was $ 58 per person, which we thought was not too ridiculously over-priced (something which the official excursions tend to be).

When I signed up for it, I also realized that this had a rather late start time, not nearly as early as the others. That suited us quite well as we did not want to rush off the boat at dawn&

Time was an important thing for us that day anyway  at least from what everyone kept telling us. We were going to stay on ship time in Cozumel. Since this was the only port in a different time zone than EST the ship did not change time, but stayed on EST. However, Cozumel local time was one hour behind. They used every opportunity to tell us about this and that we should be sure to bring a watch not a mobile phone (those might reset themselves automatically to local time if they log into the network) and never ask the locals what the time is. It started with Jimmy the cruise director telling us this before the Golden Mickeys the evening before, there was a big note on the Navigator and there were several announcements that morning.

We had gotten excursion tickets on the first day with all the other papers that were left on the desk. They told us that we were supposed to meet in the Walt Disney theater at 9:45 am. We decided to get a lazy start that morning and had ordered room service breakfast for this the night before.

Room service is free and available 24 hours a day, for breakfast (and it is only continental breakfast) you do have forms in the desk drawer to hang out on your door the evening before and they will deliver it at the requested time.

This is what we got. In the napkin there was a freshly toasted bagel that was still warm, Michael had that. Underneath the bagel plate was another plate with a muffin and a croissant. I think I checked the box for danish and got a croissant. Also the muffin was very plain. The breakfast was ok, but not great at all. But we werent really hungry anyway after all the food we had at Palo the evening before.

It did not take us long to get ready, we just needed to put on swim suits and some t-shirts and shorts over them. And of course we put on lots of sunscreen already before we got started since it would not be long until we would be out in the sun! We had packed our bags the evening before, but really did not bring a lot besides sunscreen, hat, my kindle and my older camera with its waterproof pouch. There was some discussion between us since there was a warning on the Navigator that one ought to bring credit cards since there were limits in Mexico on cash transactions. We really did not want to take any credit cards with us on the snorkel trip. And we figured that this did not apply to us anyway  the most we would be likely to buy would be a picture perhaps and if they would not take cash for that than we could live without it. I had the feeling that it was put on there to make people bring their credit cards to facilitate spontaneous shopping.

Then it was off to the Walt Disney theater. There our tickets were checked and we were told to fill in one row. Shortly after we got there a CM came and told everyone that we would not be allowed to take any fruit off the ship with us. This caused a number of families to quickly eat the bananas they had packed. And then we were all led down to deck 1 to disembark the ship:

You need to show your KTTW card when you get off the ship and when they swipe it the security officer sees on his screen a picture of you  which was taken at check in. Also, at the exit there is a place where you can grab towels to take with you. These are the same as the pool towels (and the same as the pool towels at WDW). We took two or three each since they arent that large and I like to have one to sit on and one to dry off with.

It is really nice when you get off in port you actually are directly next to the ship. This gives you a whole different appreciation of the size of the vessel. And it gives you some pretty good photo opportunities:

Here we would re-enter the ship. They do have two doors where you can get off and on, we exited from the doors in the front elevator lobby; this is the door into the aft elevator lobby:

And you get a nice view of the decorations on the aft of the ship:

The port in Cozumel is quite amazing, the water directly next to the pier is crystal clear and turquoise blue and we did spot the first fish while walking away from the ship:

The great thing about our excursion was that our catamaran was parked on the same pier as we, so we did not have to walk far at all:

We all got settled  the boat seemed to be rather filled and at first I was wondering whether I would regret being herded around. But then it kind of worked out well enough, we did find seats and once everyone was on board, it worked out quite well. When we boarded we also got our snorkel gear: mask, snorkel, an inflatable vest and flippers. Soon enough the boat took off and we did navigate around our pretty Disney Wonder:

It did take some time (I think about 20 minutes) to get to the place where we would snorkel. This was actually not far from the other cruise ship dock at Cozumel which is a bit further away from the main city. We saw the Carnival Dream docked there.

We did learn some signs on how to alert the staff in case of problems. At first I was not really paying attention as I did not realize what was going on and then I thought maybe I ought to try to remember this and then I kind of forget them again. Just like you do with the safety instructions on an airplane.

Then it was time to get into the water. We had to jump in off the side of the catamaran, which at first I thought was odd since I had seen that these usually have some stairs. But I am very comfortable with water, so that was no problem. The water had a wonderful temperature, not too warm nor to cold, still a little bit refreshing, but it was a sunny and warm day (high of 86°F/30°C).

I was seriously thinking about buying an underwater camera for this trip, but then really could not face the expenditure. But then I came across something that is a waterproof pouch through which you can take pictures. I had my old camera that had given up on me in Paris last year but now was behaving fine again once I bought its replacement. So I thought I would give this a try. Unfortunately it required a lot of coordination, and then the pouch moved a little bit, so the pictures did not come out that well&

Unfortunately the pictures do not at all capture how wonderful it was! The water was so clear, there was lots to see, at some point a whole school of fish came really close. The corrals were very pretty. After being frustrated with how difficult the picture taking was to coordinate with the snorkeling (which was rather new for me) I just tugged the camera away. Of course later on the fishies came much closer and it would have been easier to catch them on film&

Twice I managed to get a load of salt water through my snorkel  Yuck!! And the second time it happened I managed to lose my snorkel out of shock. I tried to grab it, but saw it slowly floating to the bottom of the sea. I did not feel like going after it (especially since we were wearing those inflatable vests which would have made diving difficult) and then I remembered that we had learned a hand signal for things like that. Of course now it would have been helpful to have paid attention& Luckily this was the signal I could remember and I asked people around me whether I was correct and they confirmed it. So I started to wave with one arm. After a short while one of the Mexican guides came over to me with a red buoy and handed that to me to hold onto. I thought that that was a bit odd, but I did hold it. I think it was more to make it easier for him to find me again. I thought he would go back to the boat and get a new snorkel for me, but no! He just dived down and got it back up!! I was very impressed. He then reaffixed it to my mask and I could go off again.

I think we stayed in the water for at least 30 minutes, maybe even longer and it was so wonderful. It was like swimming through an aquarium  a very pretty one! I have always loved the water, but now I know that I absolutely adore snorkeling!!

Then it was time to get back onto the boat, this time using the stairs to get back on.
And then we were heading off to the beach part of the excursion.

I was a poolrat way before it became my profession. After swim practice in the summertime The whole group of us would just stay at the pool and hangout all day long. Hence the "poolrat" because we were always around.

After I had my DD I went back to aquatics part time since it was pretty flexible. BK ( before Kids) I did some after afterschool program work being a lead teacher in the program of elementary school kids. AK ( after kids) I enjoyed the flexibility and in the end figured why not do what I enjoy???

Now that is my kind of morning and excursion! I do wish they had better room service breakfast options, we were similarly unimpressed but it did the job I guess.

I am very impressed they dove down and got your snorkel, that's wonderful!
