From the Sea to the World - Completed!

Love seeing the room. Seemed spacious. I've never been on a cruise. When Disney forgets the free stuff for DVC they always seem to make it up to you.

I can only recommend trying out cruising!! It is a wonderful way of vacationing!! And the rooms were definitely a comfortable size.

Those drinks seems quite affordable compared to the ones I had recent at a club. You'd think they'd price gouge you.

I was expecting the drinks to be more expensive - and later we went to the designated cocktail bar, there they were more expensive, but also more elaborate.

Loving the updates. Need to get on our TR as well. I know E has been busy with lots if year end stuff.

Yes, I am sure this is a busy time for many people in the US!

Dinner sounds and looks delicious! Was the duck cold? I#m sure it tasted good, but I still think this is a very odd kind to eat duck. well, cultural differences...

The official description on the menu was:

Duck Confit
Salted and Slow-cooked Duck, Dried Prunes, Candied Walnuts, Chicory and Mixed Leaves with Apple Walnut Dressing

Reading Duck Confit I expected the same dish that you and I had at Narcoossee's in 2010. But this was like rillettes without the fat. And made from duck instead of goose.

Do you have a picture, when the bedside lamp is lit? I just noticed that it's a half-globe and wondered, how it would look illuminated.

I had to think about this, but I am not sure we ever even switched on the lamp??? There was the same lamp on the other side of the bed as well. I do know that I don't have a picture of it switched on. Sorry!!

Nice update! :thumbsup2 I guess long lines are to be expected when you have seating shift times for meals, but at least it sounds like the line moved fairly quickly.

Actually, the other days when we ate in the main dining room it was much easier to get in. Maybe it was because of the first night?

Triton's does look like it would be a good experience with the blue lighting. On the negative side, I usually don't enjoy the huge dining room experience because it seems to be so noisy it is hard to enjoy conversation with people at your table. Did you notice this to be the case?

I found it actually quite pleasant. It was not too noisy. Of course being on a table just for the two of us helped. It might be more difficult at a larger table. But I never noticed the dining rooms to be noisy.

Most of your food looks really good, but I agree your filet does look a little bland. At least it sounds like it was a good steak, so that is the important thing. ::yes:: The Grand Marnier soufflé does sound really good! :goodvibes

The meat of the steak was excellent, so no complaints there!

Funny that you had a hint of Haunted Mansion in your stateroom with your "ghost host." Glad he did a good job even if you didn't see him much. :cool1:

I wish I had a stateroom host at home, too!!!! :lmao:

I'm sure I would probably try and enjoy a lot of pool time on a cruise also, so I certainly understand your going a bit crazy with it. :woohoo:

The funny thing is that reading about it now it sounds a bit crazy, but I guess when the day was going on it was more like that we spent the day in the pool and had breaks in the pool time to do other stuff in between.

:lmao: Well yes, I guess you have a point, but at least at Disney you are paying for the "atmosphere" and it is usually a very nice dining experience. Arby's is just fast food, and it always seems to cost $2 or $3 more for basically the same thing. :(

I did not notice it being more expensive, but then I did get a smallish sandwich.

I was thinking the same thing. This seemed to be a little odd for that appetizer/first course type item. I think of duck more as a main course instead of a pate' type item. :confused3

It wasn't really a pate. It was more like pulled pork, just the meat off the bones shaped into the form.

Day 5:

I had decided that I wanted to go to the DVC event - Michael had said that he rather wanted to sleep in. So the next morning I woke up feeling very rested, looked at the watch and realized that it was the perfect time to get started, so I got day-ready, grabbed my tote bag and headed out.

I know that there seems to be a consensus among the people on the DIS that you do not need a bag or purse on board, but I used my tote bag quite frequently. I would toss my kindle, my lanyard with my room key, sunscreen and a drinks cup that was larger than the ones provided on the ship into it, so I always had all the pool essentials with me. I think in future I will make sure to bring a cheap waterproof watch with me as well. I often had to use my kindle to check the time as there aren't any clocks at the adult pool or in the areas where I was hanging around. I think the only clock I ever saw was at the Goofy pool. If you want to know when it is time to get ready for dinner or you want to go to an event, I did want to be able to check the time.

I think this morning was finally the moment from that on the rest of the cruise was only filled with happiness and relaxation. There were times when I felt like I should be bouncing of the walls because everything was so wonderful and sometimes I would catch me just sitting by myself with a huge smile on my face.

So, my first thing to do was to get to the top of the ship and wander around. I wanted to get more of a feel, the day before had been over so quickly and I felt that I needed to tie all the places together which I had seen. So I headed up to deck 10 and walked around. Of course I took some pictures.

The adult pool was rather empty.

DSC00365.jpg

And there were people working on some of the wood.

DSC00366.jpg

I know I mentioned it before and I had read it before, but the shape of the ship was amazing considering its age and you saw constantly people working somewhere. I especially loved all the varnished wood as it gave the ship such a classy feel!

The Goofy pool was not crowded either.

DSC00367.jpg

DSC00368.jpg

There are more loungers on deck 10 , but we never used them as we hang out more in the pool than by the pool. Here they are all facing towards the pool, but during the day, many were turned around facing the sea and I thought that that would be the perfect place to get some sun while looking out over the water.

DSC00369.jpg

The adult pool is the most forward pool, then between it and the Goofy pool is one of the stacks and the midship elevator bank, which was the one so close to our room. Further back from the Goofy pool is the second stack and behind that the Mickey pool.

DSC00370.jpg

It was normally filled with kids and the whole area there was very crowded. But it was still too early for that, even though it really was not very early morning, I think it was around 8:15am.

Just for a change a view out to the ocean:

DSC00371-Arbeitskopie2.jpg

And then at the very end of the ship is the aft elevator bank and on deck 9 there is the Beach Blanket Buffet. I continued further to the end of the ship on deck 10 though, which meant that I was walking along the windows of Palo which is on top of Beach Blanket Buffet.

DSC00372.jpg

I saw some stairs and decided to head down and ended up on the outdoor seating area of the buffet.

DSC00373.jpg

Which was where I wanted to be, as I wanted to get some breakfast there. However by getting there this way, I had to go through the restaurant all the way to the entrance to get started with finding some food and especially a hand wipe. The cruise is really good at making sure that people have clean hands heading into restaurants. So I wanted to be good, too, and went out and asked for a hand wipe. The CM standing there at first did not react to me as she did not expect people coming out of the restaurant to want a hand wipe. But then she handed me one and made a comment on how nice it was to see me again. I was at first surprised and then I did look at her properly and realised that it was our assistant server. We did chat for a little bit while she was continuing to distribute hand wipes to everyone entering in a very polite but also kind of forceful manner.

The inside of the restaurant is very cheerful and decorated with beach balls - and the carpet is sand with blankets. Very true to its name!!!

DSC00374.jpg

Once again I was surprised how small the buffet was. But I did find some things I wanted to eat:

DSC00375.jpg

The food was nice, but not special. I enjoyed sitting outside, reading my book and having breakfast. At first I was disappointed that there was no table directly at the railing, but then it started to drizzle, so it was good that I was sitting under the glass roof.

After breakfast I decided to go back to the Cove Café, which is at the adult pool to get a good coffee. It is a nice coffee bar and I managed to get a good cappuccino there.

DSC00377.jpg

I don't know why it was served in a paper cup. I would have preferred a real one, but since I was in my cruise-happiness mode by then it did not bother me for more than 10 seconds. The chairs you can see in the pictures are outside the Cove Café and have a wonderful view of the ocean. They became one of my favorite spots on the whole ship!

I was sitting there for a while with my coffee and read my book. It was still not at all crowded. A custodial CM form Jamaica was walking by and we started chatting a bit. She was quite new on the ship and this was her first time away from home. She was very excited that she would travel with the Wonder through the Panama Canal and then on to Alaska! And then it was time to head to the DVC member celebration, which was scheduled for 9:30am.

This was being held in the bar area, in Diversions, which is a sports bar. This is a picture of Diversions from another day, but I think it fits in here:

DSC00841.jpg

The chairs were set up in rows and when I got there, there were already quite a few people, but it was not crowded. At the entrance were the two guys who I had met the day before at the DVC desk. They welcomed me to the event and I got a folder and DVC hats. They asked me how many people were in my stateroom, so I got two hats. I thought that this was nice!

Once I had found a seat a server offered me a drink and I got a mimosa. I got there just before 9:30am and the event started shortly after I got there. Once it started I saw that they did have quite a few pastries and fruit as well and thought that one could really eat breakfast there, getting there a bit earlier and grabbing a pastry. They also had hot drinks.

The event was a sales presentation, but playing more on how wonderful it is to be a DVC member than on being a hard sell. I knew I would not buy any points during the cruise. I am happy with my resale points and can't imagine buying from Disney direct as any of the valid reasons for doing so don't apply to me. I also would only be in the market for a small add on and anything under 100 points did not really have any decent incentives.

What I found very interesting was that they played a video about what is new at Disney Parks and they included DLP as well as the parks in Japan and China. Also I was pleasantly surprised that a lot of the videos focused on how vacationing at WDW offers something for everyone. I think a lot of commercials seem to focus a lot on little children and I think Disney is so much more than just a park for the youngsters. The videos also covered Adventures by Disney and DVC memories from families.

They were also giving away some prices, but I did not win anything. At the end we all got a bag and a bingo card. The bag was not at all my style, one of these string backpacks, and I don't play bingo, so that was not too exciting. However, they mentioned that we ought to have received some DVC lanyards in our room (well, I did not&) and if we hadnt go to the DVC desk and ask them for some.

Oh and at the end the shopping guide came to pay us a visit she had been at the spa raffle as well. She was so cheerful and happy that I found it rather fake. I must admit that I dont get the idea of cruising in order to buy stuff expensive stuff especially. If I would be in the market for some diamonds I would want to buy them at a reputable local jewelry shop&

Question for the Readers:

Are my pictures too big??? On my screen at home they look like a nice size. But last week I looked at the trip report when I was at work and was a bit shocked how large they looked on that screen. So I would value feedback if you like them this way or if you would prefer smaller pictures?

I like the size of the pics, they are fine. I think some people make them too small.

Enjoying the TR, Loving the pics of the ship. Glad you enjoyed your first dinner.

This sounds like a wonderful relaxing morning! But wow, at 8.15 only so few kids around? I always get the impression that my friends get up at 6 am...

What was the temperature like in the morning? The coffee looks really nice. Yoe mentioned to me already that you liked to hang out in Grove Cafe - it looks like a covered area? So what does that mean temperature wise - is it air-conditioned? I suppose it would be quite hot there otherwise with sun on a glass covered deck?

The picturesize is fine, I don't have any problems at home or at work. Only in my blackberry, but I only read the Dis on it when I get one of these late night e-mails with "update posted". And then I only really read, because the pictures would be tiny anyway...

Before I forget to answer... I think the picture size is perfect!! :)

You are on an updating roll!! So happy that you enjoyed your room location and found it so convenient. Sorry that there were some minor annoyances with delayed luggage delivery and lack of magnets/lanyards.

Sorry if you answered this previously, but I believe you said this was your very first cruise ever and I'm curious if you ever felt sea sick and/or took any precautionary measures to avoid it? That's one of the things that gives me pause about trying a cruise.

Very encouraged to hear that the drink of the day is so affordable. And strong! ;)

Looking forward to more!! popcorn::

Love that you are just moving right along.

Everything looks so nice, the "early morning" walk , the restaurants and the DVC members meeting. Most time they do such a great job with the presentation, you feel no pressure to add on. And you get free stuff!!! :cool1:

Seeing the pools so early and empty are some of my favorite views.:lmao: Very calming watching the ocean or an empty pool, a full one not so much. :lmao:

BTW the pictures are perfect!!!!! In size and content.

Your pics are the perfect size! I am really enjoying your cruise :goodvibes One day I'll take a Disney cruise but in the meantime I'm living vicariously through your TR :)

Just catching up and trying to comment quick...I don't have much time because we leave for Hawaii TOMORROW!!

I'm glad you enjoyed the meal at Triton's and seemed to be having a blissful time enjoying the ship. Looks like you really were able to explore a great deal of it. And you keep scoring DVC swag! I hope you brought an extra bag for all this stuff. :rotfl:

The pictures look fine to me!:thumbsup2

I'm still reading along Magdalene. I had to catch up on about 3 or 4 updates tonight. It's great, I feel like I am enjoying you cruise right along with you, so thanks!

Your pictures look great, don't change a thing! :thumbsup2

I am happy that you are enjoying the pictures! Seems like the poular vote is for keeping the picture size! :thumbsup2

Yes, I was surprised as well. I thought more families would make use of the early mornings... I wonder whether on a "German" ship that would be different?

What was the temperature like in the morning? The coffee looks really nice. Yoe mentioned to me already that you liked to hang out in Grove Cafe - it looks like a covered area? So what does that mean temperature wise - is it air-conditioned? I suppose it would be quite hot there otherwise with sun on a glass covered deck?

It was warm in the morning, I would say about 27°C, that's 80°F. The high for the day was 32°C, 90°F according to the Navigator. There was a slight breeze. It was actually very pleasant to be outside in the morning. The outside seating of the Cove (not Grove) Cafe is covered because there is another deck on top, so there is shade and there is plexiglass covering the railings for nearly the full hight, but the air can flow through, I never thought it was uncomfortable there, but I also did not hang out there at 3pm when it most likely was the hottest. The Cove Cafe also has an indoor area where you can sit in air conditioning.

Talking about air conditioning, it was actually a very pleasant temperature all over the ship in my opinion, perfect for running around in summer clothing.

The picturesize is fine, I don't have any problems at home or at work. Only in my blackberry, but I only read the Dis on it when I get one of these late night e-mails with "update posted". And then I only really read, because the pictures would be tiny anyway...

Good!

Well, I kind of stopped the updating again for a few days... I can very well imagine that I will cruise again in exactly the same stateroom! :thumbsup2

Sorry if you answered this previously, but I believe you said this was your very first cruise ever and I'm curious if you ever felt sea sick and/or took any precautionary measures to avoid it? That's one of the things that gives me pause about trying a cruise.

I never felt sea sick, and I am prone to certain types of motion sicknesses. I don't have trouble with Mission Space, but reading in a car very quickly makes me nauseous as well as very bendy roads. On the ship I could feel the movement, but only on the first day in the theater I was a little bit unsure, but then the show started and I forgot all about it. It might also just have been all the excitement of being on the ship. But we did not have strong seas at all. I have no idea how I would feel if the seas were rougher. Michael said that we were cruising at the perfect time of the year for calm seas as we were late enough in the year to not encounter winter storms and we were early enough in the year to avoid hurricanes. I did bring some dramamine which my doctor gave me a prescription for, but did not need it at all.

Very encouraged to hear that the drink of the day is so affordable. And strong! ;)

Looking forward to more!! popcorn::

I found drinking on the cruise far more pleasant than at WDW as the prices were friendlier... :goodvibes

People should not post that as it seems that that causes me to slow down again!!! :scared1: But I have a lot of fun working on the TR and am planning on getting more up this weekend.

It was a very nice morning. The presentation was very well done, not a lot of pressure, but they certainly tried to be very convincing.

After the presentation I think I headed up to the drink station. There is a drink station close to Beach Blanket Buffet where you get soft drinks and coffee and tea for free in small paper cups. They are about 12 oz (or 0.35l if you are on the metric system), which was far too small for my taste. But they are free and you dont even have to buy a refillable mug! We had brought some larger mugs and those were sometimes very useful - if you happened to have them with you.

They do ask if you bring your own cup that you use a fresh paper cup every time to avoid the spreading of germs. Which made me think if that is a concern on a cruise ship wont the same apply to the refillable mug stations at WDW??? Anyway, with drinks for Michael and me (always know your cabin companions favourite soft drink!) I headed back to the stateroom where Michael was just getting up.

We read the Navigator together to see if there was anything we wanted to do and chatted for a while. We were enjoying the view out of our porthole and just were happy to sit in the lovely stateroom for a while. I told Michael about my morning adventures and mentioned my Cove Café coffee. So he decided that he wanted one as well.

So we finally got started and headed up again. We ended up going all the way up to the Outlook Café since that was a new place for Michael. He had only been on the Disney Magic, never on the Wonder and the Magic does not have this. I guess I should explain a little bit about the Outlook Café and the Cove Café. Originally both the Wonder and the Magic only had the Cove Café, which is a smallish room right next to the adult pool and which is an adult only space as well. It is a speciality coffee shop that also functions as a bar. Since it is on deck 9 it does not have a direct view of the sea, but only of the walkway that goes past it. There are some chairs outside (you saw one in the previous picture), but there is inside seating as well. Before the Wonder went to Alaska they enclosed some space on deck 9, at one side of the funnel over the Cove Café, but extending along the funnel and over to the other side where there is the Arcade on deck 9. This is much more space that is enclosed now and because it is on deck 10 there is a whole side of windows which overlook the ocean. The advantage is for Alaska that you sit in a warm room and enjoy the view. It also works the other way around when you are in the Caribbean: you can sit in a nicely air conditioned room and have a view of the sea. The Outlook Café was adults only after 9pm on our cruise.

DSC00382.jpg

The windows on the left overlook the sea, the ones on the right the adult pool and behind the silver bannisters is a small staircase connecting the Outlook Café with the Cove Café downstairs.

DSC00383.jpg

This is the walkway along the pool (windows on the left look out over the pool) connecting the two triangular rooms. Here is also the bar to the right in the picture.

Once we got there we looked at the menu and liked the look of the iced coffees, there was even one that had ice cream in it. So we decided that these would make a perfect dessert after lunch. It was lunch time already and we had decided to go and head to Tritons for a sit down lunch there anyway after the coffee. So we just turned things around.

We headed down to Tritons and once we arrived in the Atrium it was filled with princesses (the Disney variety and the 5-year-old ones). They blocked the entrance to Tritons and the doors were closed. After a short moment of surprise we remembered that there is a side entrance to Tritons! I quickly got a picture of the guest services desk while we passed by it:

DSC00384.jpg

We got seated immediately and got the menu.

DSC00385.jpg

DSC00386.jpg

We both were in the mood for something lighter (we did not want to spoil our appetite for dinner at Palo later in the evening) and decided to have the salad as an entrée. And with that we decided it would be nice to have a starter as well. We both liked the sound of the Vegetable Quesadilas (served with guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo). So I asked when ordering that we would get one portion to share. Our nice server told us that this would be a shame, we should indulge ourselves and get one each and immediately wrote it down like that. Lesson learned: if you want to share something on the ship, never tell your server beforehand!

DSC00392.jpg

As you can see, the portion wasnt too large, so that was ok and I only ate two of my three pieces. It was very tasty!

Next came the Lemon Chicken Salad (pan-seared chicken breast served on mixed greens with papaya and a coconut-lemon grass dressing):

DSC00395.jpg

The chicken was freshly prepared, it was still warm. Everything was very delicious!! The papaya and the dressing gave it a nice exotic touch.

We also got a very nice bread basket with three different types of bread in it:

DSC00389.jpg

We skipped dessert since we wanted to get those coffees. We were now able to leave Tritons through the main door and said hello to Arial who sits in front of her fathers restaurant:

DSC00396.jpg

We also admired the walkway to the Walt Disney Theater, which was already decorated for tonights show: The Golden Mickeys. You get to walk on the red carpet for it&

DSC00399.jpg

This walkway leads through the shopping area, there are shops on both sides, one more for kids, the other more grown up.

Then we slowly headed up to the Outlook Café.

Michael got the iced cappuccino with the vanilla ice cream, I just had an iced cafe latte.

DSC00407.jpg

And then we sat there, enjoyed the drinks and the view of Cuba in the distance:

DSC00379-Arbeitskopie2.jpg

I guess I worked a bit on my trip report notes, we chatted a bit and then it was suddenly time for the one thing that we had picked out of the Navigator: the Art of the Theme Show Tour at 3pm.

Somehow four hours had passed and the only true activity that we had accomplished was having lunch. It was just wonderful! And relaxing. And when I was sitting in the Outlook Café I am sure I told Michael at least three or four times how fantastic cruising is, how much I love this ship and how happy I was. And I had figured out by now that five nights really is far too short and also that I adore sea days&

Next: A Tour and a Escape

People should not post that as it seems that that causes me to slow down again!!! :scared1: But I have a lot of fun working on the TR and am planning on getting more up this weekend.

:lmao: Funny how that happens. Hopefully I will have more time soon. Work is stabilizing a bit. Not really slowing down but stabilizing. :rolleyes1

Oh yes that is too small. Mental note to bring big mug......

Another mental note. Nice to encourage but really if I want 1 to share bring me that, if I want more I will order more. :rolleyes1 Don't think you are in any danger of going hungry on a cruise. :rotfl:

Isn't that nice when you can relax and just get lost in time? I think I would like at sea days too. Nothing to do BUT relax.:)

I classic German ice coffee?
