I think it is more fun than scary. The special effects like the fire can get hot! My 10 year old has been on it many times. There are characters, but they tend to come out in a group for short periods of time and they always have minders.

Jaws is hot. Have the child sit in the middle.
There is real fire that comes out from the water. It's about 30 feet away, but still hot. Have your child cover her face with her hands when it appears.

Jaws is fun. They always warn you that could get wet even soaked. I have done the ride about 50 times and never got more than a small spray. The last time I rode it the boat leaned starboard and totally filled my lap with water. My 10 and 16 year olds loved it.

The first time we took my little brother on Jaws, he was 9. He was scared before we even got on the ride b/c he was a little scared of sharks at the time. He was nervous the whole time and when Jaws jumped up on one side of the boat, he literally nearly fell out of the boat on the other side just trying to get away. If we hadn't grabbed him he would have fell into the water! It was funny to us, but we felt bad for him. We took him on it the following year, and he was fine. He is 14 now and is embarrassed that it ever scared him.
Personally, unless your 10 year old is terrified of sharks or doesn't grasp that the ride isn't real (which I am sure she understands that) then she will probably enjoy it. It isn't scary, IMO. It is fun. If she is still unsure, let her sit in the middle, so she won't have to be right there beside the water when Jaws pops up.

My 10 year old son (last year) went on Jaws for the first time and wasn't familiar with the story because he hadn't seen the movie. His dad had him sit on the outside of the boat. We were positioned pretty much in the middle of the boat (right where the shark jumps out at you). His reaction was priceless, but I can say that he was very scared by the fire, the shark jumping out of the water and the explosion noise. After the second or third time riding, however, he was an old hand at it and it didn't bother him at all. The first time is the scariest.

thanks everyone. I let my daughter read all these posts. She decided that sitting in the middle of my hubby and I is where she is going to be, at least for the first time riding.
We r leaving Thursday, 7/8..I cant tell you how excited we r. I am trying to take all the advice and retain it.

Thanks again

To make the ride more fun than scary, why not pre-plan to act on the ride. My parents and I like to scream and shout out random things "I'm afraid of the dark! I hate it when that happens!" or whatever...we know we're pretending, and it gets us involved. Maybe tell your daughter to play actress while on the ride...and convince the other tourists that the ride is scary or something...sometimes, you'll get adults and other kids joining in. :)

Thanks flyfly , that sounds great since she is a little actress anyway...lol
I enjoy your web by the way and go on it often.
