From Anaheim to Hollywood

Was thinking about taking a trip over to the Disney Soda Fountain and Studio Store while on our trip in September. We will not have a rental, was wondering how much for cab fare or other transportation options recommended?

Hmm was thinking of exactly the same thing as well as having a walk around Hollywood looking at the Stars etc , going to the Hard Rock and Beverley Centre and a stroll along Sunset .

We were thinking of a hire car - but is parking hard to find ?

NOOO way too expensive. Just rent a car it's cheaper. Probably hotwire a good deal.

Cab fare would probably be alot more expensive than a car rental for the day. You can park at the Hollywood & Highland shopping center; unless there's something major going on during your visit (ie: award ceremony in the Kodak Theater; movie premiere at the Chinese Theatre), parking will be no problem.

There is a city bus that runs between Anaheim and downtown L.A. (you'd transfer to the subway to get to Hollywood), but the trip is a few hours & not something I'd recommend to anyone unfamiliar with the public transportation system.

We are going to take a break during our August DL stay to go to Hollywood for a day...I am renting a car from the Alamo Downtown Disney location. I have rented it starting on Friday evening (the night before we are going to Hollywood) and returning it on Sunday at the John Wayne Airport before our flight home. Two day Rental--full size car was around $62.00 total. I plan on checking again closer to our trip to see if I can get an even lower rate.

I figure we would have spent $10 each on a shuttle ride to the airport anyway (there will be 5 of us).

There's plenty to see and do in Hollywood...we're taking a walking tour, going to the museum at Hollywood Bowl, maybe catch a movie at El Capitan Theater, Soda Fountain, and Farmers Market, etc...here's a thread that I found interesting from another dis'er:

Before you go, be prepared for Hollywood Blvd to be seedier than you expect. The block around the Soda Fountain is all redone, but right around it is very un-renovated. It's authentic and all, but I just want you to be prepared!

When I looked at it, it said about 40 min, but I didn't think about traffic.

Hmm, wonder if it's going to be even possible now I was just mainly wanting to go to see the place and grab something sweet after we were finished up at the Expo in the evening, don't really have a whole day to dedicate to going there.

To just go for an ice cream after the expo? I wouldn't take on the trip. Traffic can be a bear. If you were doing the El Capitan and maybe looking at the stars/footprints it might be worth it - but I've been in the soda fountain after El Capitan trips for special premieres and as much as a Disney addict as I am I've never been compelled to eat there - just buy a pin or 2.

IMO, just driving up there to see the Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theater, and El Capitan and grabbing a bite to eat the Soda Fountain is not at all worth the time and money it takes to get there. In and of itself, the soda fountain is not worth it especially if you have to rent a car or take a bus.

Now, if you were to take in a classic Disney film that is no longer released in theaters, it would be worth it. The El Capitan is beautiful and it's really cool to hear the organist before the films, but I also think that because of the cost, it's only worth doing if the movie playing there is great. I think you should know ahead of time that you like the movie.

We also want to try one of those Pinks hot dogs in Hollywood, has anyone else seen or had them??? I know, totally tourist-y...and probably not worth the drive, but at least we could say we did it. I do like the movie idea.

Pinks is up the road on Melrose and I think is mentioned in the Hollywood thread http://www.disboards.com/showthread....ferrerid=28959 it can have up to a two hour line. Personally I have driven by it a bunch of times but never eaten there. I do love the Pinkberry around the corner though. Some say it's worth it and some say its not. I think if you have a day in Hollywood planned its worth it, but to drive in just for Pinks not worth it, same as the Soda Fountain.

I can vouch personally for the trip taking anywhere between 2 1/2 and 4 hours, depending on the traffic. I've taken the bus/subway route between Hollywood + Anaheim many a time. Unless they've come up with a more direct route on the bus since I last was out there in March. If so, that would be fabulous!

NOT a very fast way but one rather easy way to do it is to take some sort of transportation to the Anaheim Amtrack station (ART or a Cab) then take the any Amtrack train going into LA Union Station then hit the Red Line and it will take you right to Hollywood.

We considered doing just that - got the times of the trains from the website - the station at Fullerton looks just as close (from DLR) is it? Also Fullerton has more trains, I noticed.

The Fullerton station is a little further away (4 miles vs 2 miles) but is closer to LA so the train fare would be cheaper (last I heard). You can get to either station via bus - #43 goes northbound on Harbor and stops in the Fullerton station parking lot, while #50 goes eastbound on Katella - you'd get off at Howell Avenue and walk south across the parking lot in the direction of Anaheim Stadium - there's a gate that leads to a tunnel under the train tracks.
