Friends DH died from missed Appendicitis

We just heard yesterday that a former mentor of my dh's lost her husband in July. He was having pain and vomiting, went to the hospital, they thought it was food poisioning! They gave him painkillers. He died. After his death it was determined that his appendix had ruptured and the toxins released affected his heart. (I think I'm getting all this right).

Anyway, the couple have only been married a few short years. Second marriages for both. They were deliriously happy. Both ministers, met at the church. She is the sr. minister, he came to be the associate and music person. They fell in love.

She is devastated we've been told. Barely able to make through each day. Can't even imagine losing your husband and your best co-worker. It is all so sad.

One silver lining, she welcomed her first grandbaby into the world on Dec. 29.

It's just so sad. Hug your loved ones today!

My dad had a really bad experience with a ruptured appendix. He was driving to work, and his ruptured and he thought he was having a heart attack. He abandoned his car on the side of the road, and stumpled to a pay phone to call an ambulance.

My step mom got a call from the police, saying that they found his abandoned car. No one knew what hapenned to him She was frantic and thought thought he had been car jacked!

He made it to the hospital in time. My stepmom was finally notified, and everything turned out okay!

Minniepumpernickel, I'm glad your dad is ok. That would be too scary for everyone (him for having the pain while driving, your mom because she didn't know what was going on, etc).

I knew that people said you could die from having your appendix rupture, but I've never heard of it actually happening. My dad's appendix ruptured a week before they realized what had happened and took it out. It was a slow recovery because the poison had eaten the skin on his tummy, so the incision healed very slowly, but he recovered completely.

I am so sorry to hear that. It's always more tragic when it seems it could have been prevented. I lost a good friend almost 2 years ago from undetected strep. There's always a lot of anger that goes along with the grief at times like that.

I am so sorry to hear this about your friend. I had appendicitis three weeks after giving birth to my DD. The docs in the emergency room where going to send me home even though I was unable to walk because of the pain. Every test was performed and they couldn't determine what was wrong. I refused to leave the hospital and made them call my OB. He ordered an MRI and the appendicitis was found. Thank God for my OB. Because of this and another similar incident, I am a very vocal patient and I will take charge.

My brother had a ruptured one years ago and was ill for a month. Certainly can be dangerous. And yes, cinlee, we all have to be vocal regarding health.

I had a ruptured appendix 7 years ago. The surgeon said it was a terrible mess to clean up inside. I was in the hospital for a week afterwards on some super strong IV antibiotics. I never realized until then just how dangerous a ruptured appendix can be.

Sorry to hear the Pembo, such sad news on the dis today. My little brother almost died from the same thing. He was about four, and we live 55 miles from the nearest hospital. When we got him there, they gave him pennicillin, and then found out he was allergic to it. Between the appendix toxins and the reaction to the drug, he went into cardiac arrest. It was pretty scary. It took him months to recover. I am so thankful he is okay.

Prayers and pd are sent from out west for his wife.

I too had issues with my apendix..... they wanted to send me home because they also said I had the flu....... I insisited I didnt, since I felt fine, except for throwing up constantly. They gave me 3........ yes 3 pregancies tests (nice when I was only 20 and living at home) Finally after many cavity searches, they pressed for the 100th time on my apendix, just as the finaly labs came back, and WOWIE ZOWIE the pain..... that is when it burst..... the labs had my white count (ithink) off the charts and in was less than 5 minutes before I was heading to the OR......

If I hadnt of isisited I been sceene.... I dread what could of happened.

I am very sorry for your DH mentor's husband.

One of our paralegals' son had a ruptured appendix this last year and he missed a significant amount of school due to this condition. At first, he was diagnoised with food poisoning and it was not until he had a severe fever that the burst appendix was discovered.

I'm very sorry for your friend's loss.

My son's appendix burst December 19, 2001. He was 4 years old and I had taken him to the DR. for three days straight. They patted me on the head and told me he was constipated. Finally on the 3rd day I said I wanted a CT scan and they did one.... it had ruptured. It's certainly nothing to take lightly!!
