We recently purchased DVC and gave the name our friends as a referral. We haven't mentioned it to them as of yet, I guess I like to err on the side of caution just in case something went wrong. We Fed Ex'd our paper work last week and are waiting to close. How long does it take for the referral to "show" up and does Disney typically contact the referring member so they know about it? Thanks.

My DSIL listed us as a referral. She closed in early March 2010 and we received a thank you note from our guide (she used him as well) in mid-May 2010. Since we reside in Texas we do not qualify for a Disney gift card (state law prevents it) so I cannot give you the timing on that part of the referral gift.

You could always send them a noting thanking them for their help in researching the DVC and tell them the news that you bought and used their names as a referral, so they can keep an eye out for the gift.

I'm surprised your friends haven't already gotten a letter stating you referred them. That's actually step #1 - you just get a form letter saying that and saying "thanks" and if they actually buy in, then you get a follow-up telling you you are eligible for the reward (if your state allows that).

We just got a letter last week for some friends we referred - but I don't know how long it took for the letter.

Thanks for your posts. I know they haven't received anything as of yet, as they would have definately said something. Maybe I will call my guide just to make sure all is on track and then I will send a thank you with a note to look out for referral gift.

We used some friends as a referal, said nothing to them, and waited for them to notice something. A year went by, no comments from our friends. We have no idea if they were "Thanked"by Disney, given a gift card, or just ignored.

I was referred by a friend when I joined. It took about 2 months for him to get a thank you note. It took a phone call to find out his state (Michigan) is not eligible for the Gift Card reward.

Definately going to call my Guide and get the scoop. She didn't mention anything (not eligible) when I made the referral. We live in IL as does our friend. I want to make sure they get what they are entitled to.

Thanks again everyone!

The DVC Member Website has a section on the various states' laws on referral awards. Some allow it without limit, some have restrictions and some do not allow it at all.

Illinois allows it with restrictions. There is a yearly limit of "referral $$" that you can accept if you reside there. I live there myself. :)

In my experience, DVC (or the guides) aren't that great about giving the referral money. We have had to go up the chain of command to receive rewards in the past (and it took many, many months). Not sure where the breakdown is, but it is frustrating. I am glad that people who have used my name have let me know, that way, I know to follow up!

A friend of mine closed a few weeks ago. I got an email on Monday to claim my reward. But when I went to the website, it wasn't there! It showed up yesterday.:banana:

Interesting, thanks for the continual posts. I did see on web site there were limits for IL as far as I know this is their only one for this year, so that shouldn't be an issue. I plan on calling my Guide today and check into it. Hopefully it will not be something that I have to push about and check on to make sure it is getting done. That would be very disappointing. Thanks again.

I just called my Guide; I thought I would share what she told me. First the sale has to close, which I figured. The estimated closing date is July 21st. Within 15-45 days of closing my friends should be notified that they were awarded a referral bonus. She thought it would be by e-mail, but wasn't 100% certain of that fact. My friends then would have 12 months to contact Disney to claim the reward.

Now that I know the time frame that we are working with, I will wait until after the closing becomes official and then tell my friends that they should be expecting some type of communication from Disney notifying them of the referral bonus. If after the 45 nothing has been received I can call back and see what is going on.

Hopefully it will all work out well and easily. I was impressed by my Guide though. I had so researched DVC between resale and direct through Disney that the only contact I had her with was the 10 minutes it took on the phone to purchase and get personal information. We have not spoken since. She remembered me, which I would expect but she also remembered my friend's name with the correct pronunciation (it has 12 letters with a Q stuck in the middle). I couldn't beleive it. Hopefully that is a good sign. ;)

That's exactly what happened. The email gives you a link to the website. But the website wasn't updated until a day after the email.
