Fried Pickles

They used to have them at the Wildhorse saloon at Pleasure Island, but since that closed I haven't seen them anywhere.

I don't mean to go OT but what kind of pickels do you fry? Just curious :goodvibes

Terri

Back in 1988 one came with a chicken sand. at the Grand Floridain Cafe ( I do not remember if that was the name back then) but if I recall correctly it was in more of a cornbread type of batter (like a corndog). I do remember them being very yummy! ;)

Here is how I make them and they are delicious. Scramble an egg with a fork and mix with about a cup of milk. In a separate bowl mix cornmeal and flour in equal proportions. Add a good dose of salt and pepper. Mix up really good. Now, take your sliced dill pickles, like the kind you eat on a hamburger, and dip in the egg mixture. Then dip in the cornmeal mixture. Then fry turning after a couple of minutes. Take out of hot oil and drain on paper towels. You can eat them just like that or if you are patient enough to pour some ranch dressing, dip them in that. So easy and soooooo good.

The first time I had these was in the late 70's/early 80's at a fast food place called Lums. I fell in love with them. My dad would take me just for the fried pickles. I think they are a lot like fried green tomatoes also but they aren't quite as greasy.

I love fried pickles!!! I'm so glad that Applebee's has them on their menu now. I know I've had them somewhere else as well but can't remember. They use thick dill pickle slices for frying. Most places I've had them don't use ranch dressing but a zesty dipping sauce. YUM-O!!!!

This is the first time I've heard of fried pickles. I've eaten in most of the WDW restaurants and have never seen them on a menu. Trust me, I'd remember.

I am a huge fan of pickles, and like fried foods as much as the next guy...but I dunno about Fried Pickles. Maybe they sound gross and taste good...but that sounds gross.

do you deep fry or skillet fry (like fried chicken)?

We--more correctly I, the guys were freaked :teeth: --had these in Alabama some years back. Fried pickles went real well with the fried frog! I thought DSthen12, DH & DFIL were going to get up from the table & leave me there to munch by my lonesome! :lmao:

Hey, I didn't pack on these pounds by sticking to salads!
Thanks for the recipe!

Now, I feel like frying up a candy bar!

Oh. My. God. Thank you for posting your recipe, I'm going to try these! I've seen them on the menu at Applebee's but my husband laughed when I suggested we try them. They sound delicious to me!

Pickles? Good. ::yes::
Fried Food? Gooooooood. ::yes::

The first time I heard of chocolate-covered gummi bears I thought someone had gone insane. But then I tasted them, and fell head-over-heels butt-crazy in LOVE. Oh yeah. ::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

You could do them either way. I don’t have a deep fryer anymore and since they are so small you don’t need more than a half inch of oil in the skillet when you fry them.

As I look at the hometowns of the people who claim fried pickles sound gross, I can't help but note that most are from the north. It's definitely a southern thing. It's not like they're Rocky Mountain Oysters or anything.

You are right but I see you are from Dallas. When we lived there I mentioned them to a co-worker and she had never heard of them. By the time we left Texas, 10 years later, they were available at some restaurants.

I bet most of those people who have never had fried dill pickles have never had boiled peanuts either. Another southern delicacy.

Lol. My dh is from Minnesota. He looked at me as if I was crazy the first time I mentioned boiled peanuts around him. He's tried them but thinks they are gross :confused3

The only thing better than fried pickles is sliced dill pickles on a peanut butter sandwich!

I had completely forgotten about Lums. They were a great place to grab a bite to eat. I still have one of the giant beer mugs from there. To bad they went out of business.
