Fried Dough

I think zeppolis and beignets are about as close as you are going to get, but I find them to lean a little more to the donut side than fried dough side of things.
Their dough is a bit sweeter.

When I think fried dough (and it is a huge family tradition for us at xmas time), I think of dough that you could just as easily bake into a loaf of bread. Instead, you break it into pieces and spread it out the size of your hand or bigger like a little pizza and deep fry it and toss in regular sugar (not powdered).
(it is absolutely nothing like bread that has alredy been baked and fried...ick)

But, the beignets are still pretty darn good as well as 10 million other pastry choices at disney. When you see all the options everywhere, you probably wont even think of fried dough much.

Oh, I've been to Disney enough times to know that there are a gazillion treats to tempt, it is specifically, however fried dough that she's interested in. Well, that and Mickey Bars!!

I am not sure if they are still sold in Canada area of Epcot, but they called them "Beaver Tails". They were sold at a small kiosk.

yep, my family remembers fried dough called Beaver Tails at the kiosk in Canada. It was yummy. cinnamon sugar. yum! same as we get at our country fair. Sad to hear it's not there anymore.

Oh yeah, I've also heard it called Elephant ears. Which in my opinion is what it is usually shaped like. :)

fried dough!! found at every church carnival and town celebration. No, POFQ beignets are NOT the same nor are zeppoli's. Personally, I love my fried dough with sauce & cheese instead of sugar and the joy of real fried dough is that it tastes amazing both as a "pizza" and as a dessert. Sorry to say, you will find nothing that even comes close at WDW.

As a transplanted New England gal I make my own. Nothing beats it! Reminds me of days at Salisbury Beach.

No trip to southern Maine is complete without Pier Fries and Fried Dough from Old Orchard Beach.

(Or an Amato's Italian, but maybe that's just me!) :rotfl:

This Mainer couldn't agree more!! Don't forget the Bill's Pizza to go with those pier fries!!

I also love fried dough! I wish they served this at WDW because I think it is yummier than funnel cake.

I like it savory too.
At xmas all of my family makes them and there are always a handful that are made with anchovies in them. The trick as a kid was to AVOID the anchovy ones...it was really a bad thing when you chose wrong! lol.

As an adult, I love them. I'm sure the anchovy ones won't be anywhere at Disney anytime soon....lol.

I'm not sure if it is fried dough, but the bakery in France has elephant ears. Here in Michigan, an elephant ear is fried dough with cinnamon/sugar sprinkles, or with apple or cherry topping.

Here in a very italian area of PA it is called pizza fritta. It is basically like a pizza dough but not as dry fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar. At our church carnivals they also make it wrapped around sausage and peppers.
I did read when Via Napoli opens they will have a type of zeppole with ricotta cheese.
