Yes to the first, but no to the second. My parents spent the money I was about 10 last time I was there and I remember thinking "all these billboards for THIS?!?"

Now, I go to SC quite often, but never down I-95. I was looking to see how far out of my way it would be to take a detour and go to SOTB on my way to my usual destination, and it's about 2 hours out of the way, so nope!

The billboards ARE the attraction. I have never actually been though I have been by several times.

My dad always called it a textbook example of a tourist trap. Joe's explanation makes sense... I still remember crossing the border to buy fireworks.
