Neti Pot Once a Day Can Cause Infections
Using a Neti Pot Every Day Could Aggravate Sinus Infections, Study Finds

MIAMI -- Contrary to popular belief, irrigating the nose every day with the help of a Neti pot may actually make patients more susceptible to sinus infections, researchers said here.

Those who stopped using the nasal saline wash on a regular basis had a 62 percent decrease in the frequency of acute rhinosinusitis, Dr. Talal M. Nsouli, of Watergate Allergy & Asthma Center in Washington, and colleagues reported at the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology meeting here.

"I don't have anything against short-term nasal saline irrigation -- even aggressive nasal saline irrigation for three, four days or one week is totally fine," Nsouli said. "But when we are doing it on a daily basis, we are modifying the immunological biochemistry of the nose."

That, he said, can result in a "depletion of immune elements" -- hence, recurrent sinus infections.

"This will lead us to a vicious cycle," Nsouli said. "More infections, more nasal saline; more nasal saline, more infections. We need to cut this cycle."

If people are using the Neti Pot to prevent infections because they get them frequently, investigators said, physicians should find out why they're being infected in the first place.

This type of nasal irrigation has ancient roots, and the form most popular today has stems from an Ayurvedic technique known as jala neti.

The container used to administer the saline solution, which typically has a long spout and resembles an oil lamp, is called a Neti pot, from the Sanskrit term for "nasal cleansing."

Nsouli and colleagues said they conducted the study because, despite its popularity, this type of nasal saline irrigation had not been assessed for efficacy.

The researchers recruited 68 patients who had used nasal saline irrigation frequently for a year, then discontinued the practice for a year. A total of 24 control patients who continued to wash out their noses with salt were also included.

The investigators found that 62 percent of people had a significant drop-off in the frequency of their rhinosinusitis infections after discontinuing the treatment.

Those patients also had 50 percent fewer sinus infections than those who remained on the nasal saline irrigation therapy.

Nsouli said the likely explanation is that irrigation depletes the nasal mucus, which contains several key defense mechanisms -- including immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, lactoferrin, and lysozyme.

This "good mucus," Nsouli said, contains "antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral agents that clear any microorganisms from the nose."

Dr. John J. Oppenheimer, of New Jersey Medical School, said the results don't mean nasal saline irrigation is "not something to consider if you have a cold."

It's just "not necessarily good on a day-to-day basis," he said.

Still, it needs to be studied when applied to acute situations, he said, and he'd "feel more comfortable seeing the results replicated."

But Oppenheimer noted that the study is an example of how taking the time to ask patients questions about their history and current habits can potentially be a key to treatment.

Oh brother! :faint: It won't be the last time something I'm told is OK turns out not to be. Thankfully, my neti pot and I parted ways years ago...after my sinus surgery.:lmao:

Thanks for the article! :)

makes sense!

I can see short term use - but not daily!

it was recommended by my physician one time, but I know I couldn't do it!:)

:wizard:

I only use mine when I have a major issue with my sinuses. If I have a really bad upper respiratory infection I will use it for a few days to try to relieve some of the pressure.

I know I couldn't ever use one of these things. The mere thought makes me choke and gag.

I love mine, but i only use it maybe a handful of times a year. Clears me right up, but i can see how using it all the time is bad. I like it because I dont have to take meds with it. The sinus meds make me feel awful!

JUST GREAT!

When DS11 was at the Ped's last month he sent me home with one of the squirt ones to help my kid without using meds. DS has bad allergies so I thought it would be good especially considering all the mold. So he's been using it every day. Over the past 2 weeks or so DS has been complaining of many headaches. I get migraines and DS is near puberty and was diagnosed so I just thought it was that stirring up things. Then last night he tells me all the pain is in his forehead... not a normal migraine spot. So I do the math and realize the kid probably has a Sinus infection I've been neglecting because he never had one before and didn't recognize it for what it is. So he's going to the Dr tomorrow. Poor kid, I bet the darn Neti did this!

Thanks for posting this or I never would have guessed something holistic the Dr handed me could do damage.. now I'll do things differently..:disrocks:

Hmmm, Dr. Oz was wrong :rotfl:
I have never attempted the Neti pot because it is just weird to me. I know that Dr. Oz said to use it every day though.

I only use mine when I'm sick or having major allergy issues. Otherwise it's in my cabinet. I like it when I need it but I try not to overdo anything like that. Thanks for the info OP, good to know! :)

We had (years ago) an E.N.T. suggest one for ds and in the process of using it he blew his eardrum out from the pressure. When we were at the ER the Dr's there all commented how much they hate them and how many people they see a year that have done some sort of damage from them. We came home and threw ds's out and never thought of using one again!

I love my Neti pot. I don't use it daily, maybe once a week, and more often if I've got a cold. I used to get sinus infections that lasted for months, but since using the Neti pot, they are a thing of the past. When I do get a cold, I'm over it much faster.

The study quoted was a pretty small sample size.

i use it when I get a really bad sinus infection. That is the only time my DR says to use it. I can't see using it every day.

I'm a firm believer in it and it works for me. I don't do it daily throughout the year but this time of year when the heat comes on I will use it on a daily basis. I think I've had one sinus infection in my life so I don't use if for that, but I get full and can't breath and the Neti helps me.

It's like everything else, it may work for some and not others.

I had never heard of a Neti Pot until yesterday. My boss knows that I suffer from sinus problems that put me out of commission for 3 or 4 days at at time, at least a couple of times a year. She told me about the Neti Pot and said she has suffered from allergies all her life and this has made a huge difference. I plan on buying one tomorrow, but I think that I will only use it when I start feeling stuffed up.

I tried this thing once, and almost drowned myself.
I make every effort to keep water OUT of my nose. I hate when I get water up my nose in the shower. Ugh. Horrible feeling. To do it on purpose? :sad2:
I know I couldn't ever use one of these things. The mere thought makes me choke and gag.
Same here!

The doctors on "The Doctors" are big on this, aren't they? Haven't watched the show in a while, so I don't know if they've addressed any negative issues with it. The first time I ever heard of the Neti Pot was on that show.

Glad I resisted the urge.

I remember when finally trying to do something with my allergies, we were doing saline flushes in the shower and I thought even that was ridiculous. Finally went to an allergist and he never mentioned the neti pot.

I agree that this was a very small sample, so more research needs to be done. I've been told by my doctor that people with chronic sinusitis (like ME) should use saline irrigation or neti pot every day. :confused3 I don't think I've had any problems from using mine. We'll see.
