Freebirthing

home birth or birthing center with a midwife - yes. I wouldn't go it alone though! However, I don't judge others choices. I just personally couldn't do it.

:)

After seeing the previews for it 10000 times I suggested we have a freebirth at home for our next (ahahahah) Joking of course we are DONE having children. Most of my pregnancy this time was done with a midwife. As long as some medical person was in the room to catch him I really didn't care who it was, but there was no way we were doing it ourself. Plus who wants to clean all that icky stuff up? blah.. No eating/saving the placenta for me although I did joke about it this time with the dr.

I love giving birth as well. Its an awesome feeling. I'm a little sad I dont get to do it again :(

The women of yesterday did it fine.
Of course, a lot of babies grew up without Mama in those days.

Exactly.. I think they have conveniently forgotten how many mothers and/or babies died while giving birth "back in the day"..

I agree :thumbsup2
The gals who want to freebirth are probably reading about all the rest of us who choose different and think we're all nuts. Different strokes for different folks.

Does a midwife qualify?

:rotfl: I thought about that when I posted - yes, I suppose a midwife would qualify, although I personally wanted a hospital birth and as many drugs as possible as quickly as possible. This concept of no one with ANY training nearby is just foreign to me, though.

My friend had her second DS with a midwife. He got stuck and she was hemorrhaging. She had to be rushed to the hospital, her DS was born with a broken arm and broken collarbone. If she had been at home without a midwife the outcome would have been MUCH worse. This just happened 3 years ago.

I've had two natural births at a well respected birth center outside of DC (midwives). However, that birth center has stopped doing births at their center due to rising insurance rates. The midwives deliver at a local hospital now. I had two wonderful experiences but I would never have a "freebirth." I would never forgive myself if something happened...to me or to my baby. I'm a cancer survivor so I've spent a lot of time with doctors and in medical facilities. I'm certainly aware and grateful for their knowledge and skill. It is very sad though that birth has become so managed and has left women with fewer choices.

I didn't care one bit about my experience except that I wasn't enthused about it being painful. I wanted what I felt was safest for DS.

I went to the Bornfree website and watched some of the unassisted birth videos.

While I agree that births should be attended by medical personnel or a midwife, I could not believe the conditions in which some of these women were giving birth. And I do understand why some women choose a home birth. But...

A baby pool in the kitchen floor of my rural home with the table behind me junked up with crapola and the grandmother/aunt/sister/cousin/whoever leaning over gawking at my nethers with a drink in one hand while I'm laboring? Umm. No.

And then there was another. Giving birth amongst the piles of moving boxes? Sounds relaxing to me! I mean, I've never given birth, but I'm sure if I did...the complete disaray around me would totally mess with my chi. :rotfl2:

Do I think these women are out of their everlovin minds? Yes.
Do I think they should still get the choice to birth w/o medical personnel or a midwife? Sure..if that's the way they want to do it.

It's not a choice I made for myself, or would ever make for myself. But far be it from me to deny somebody the chance to do things exactly as they think they ought to be. I knew from the time I found out I was pregnant with DS that I wanted pain meds. I am a big ol' wuss and I had watched WAY too many episodes of Birth Story and other birthing shows on tv. Just watching those women give birth at home, in water, upside down, whatever scared the pants off me.:scared1:

:rotfl:

There were periods during my labor when I didn't even want DH or the nurses in the room, let alone my mother and MIL.

I just had a baby 3 months ago and I'm so glad I was in a hospital with lots and lots of drugs :lmao: Never ever would I deliver a baby at home. With all the advances in this day and age, I would never take a chance and do it like they did in the olden days.

She is adorable...look at all that hair!:cutie:

Me too. I think had I not had the drugs, I wouldn't have enjoyed giving birth as much as I did. I was able to talk to DH coherently (most of the time:rotfl: ), watch movies..it was great. The worst part was the darn blood pressure cuff that had to stay on constantly. That bugged the daylights outta me.

THanks!:flower3: I just started getting sleep at night, otherwise I've been looking like :coffee: lol

Yes, I had to get 4 epidural before it worked and it wasn't until the last possible minute that I got pain relief. I'm so glad I had it before I had to push!!! (She came so fast, I had a 6 hour labor and I pushed 3 times and she was out!!!!)

I agree :thumbsup2

I support women having an unmedicated birth experience, and I agree that medical births are way more common today, thanks to malpractice insurance. However, their are two lives involved with childbirth, and I don't think it's a woman's life to put her unborn child's life in danger. This is why we have laws to protect innocent children.

Now gosh darn it!! She's just toooooooo cute! I tried to reach through my computer screen and give her a big hug and a kiss, but it didn't work..:sad2:

Do it for me, okay? :thumbsup2

She is BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!! :lovestruc

That's what coffee is for, sweetie. ;)

At least her hair lays flattish..or looks like it does from the picture. DS had this little downy duck fluff that refused to lay flat no matter what we did to it. We nicknamed it Harry Potter head.:rotfl:

I only saw the commercials but hubby and I talked about it (NOT about doing it, but about the commercials! :lmao: )
I see both sides. The women of yesterday did it fine.
Of course, a lot of babies grew up without Mama in those days.

I only saw the commercial as well, but have to point out the women of yesterday never had free births...every community had some type of midwife or designated midwife to assist the mother...

Even back in the day they knew better then to go it alone

I watched this show the other night and I thought these women were nuts. Having your baby with a midwife at home or in a birthing center is a different thing.

The one woman from the UK who had her baby in the pool was just crazy to watch. That woman did not make ONE peep. She wasn't sweating or anything! Just woop, there's the baby. The baby didn't even cry. It was really nuts.

The other woman from Colorado REALLY made me upset. She didn't even know what to do with umbilical cord. Her, her husband and her step mother were all just looking at each other, like "what do we do?". Then when her baby was coming out and his head was out, the Dad start pulling the baby by the head! :scared1: Then this lady went the hospital because she couldn't deliver the placenta, and the doctor at the ER was so upset with her. She even had the ER check out her baby, which made no sense to me. It seemed like she just defeated her purpose of unassisted birth. :confused3 :sad2:

I have no problem with someone wanting to do a freebirth. Why should I? Today we treat childbirth as a medical condition and have to be hooked up to machines and IV's, when the whole process is completely natural. That is what I think people forget these days.

If someone wants to have a freebirth at home, that is fine with me. If a medical problem arises, that is what the hospitals are for. Now, I think you should be informed of what needs to be done and if this happens - do this - or that happens - do that. I dont think it is safe to go into blindly, that is for sure. But with the proper information and training, I dont see why anyone would be upset over their choice.
