Typically I send a cute letter the week we travel to a Disney resort and request pixie dust. In years past, I’ve always gotten upgraded to a preferred location. Is this a thing at SOG? Are their preferred locations? We have lots of kids and strollers with us.

This is a fantastic idea. Do you normally send it via mail or email? Thanks for the idea.

Shades of Green doesn't have 'preferred rooms,' they have standard, poolside (which are only 10 dollars more than standard; the room isn't different than the others, it's just literally closer to the pools), and the suites. You can request which wing you want to be in, but I don't think they'd be moving you up into a suite unless they have room/capacity issues. You could also look at their booking calendar to see how sold out they are for your dates, if you really want to gage the situation.

you could put in request to be closer to the lobby. The hallways are pretty long. There is a newer section. (closer to garage elevators). We have always requested those and have always gotten a room there. Honestly though, all the rooms here are really nice and they do everything they can to accommodate your requests.

Yep, what they said. I always put in my request for location when I make my reservation. They can’t guarantee them, but so far my requests have always been honored.

We write it from a child’s POV and send a photo of our kids. Through snail mail lol

What would you call a preferred location there. We will be walking and using Disney transport. I’ve heard using the monorail is best. We won’t be swimming very much. If at all.

I don’t think any of the rooms are really preferred. You can specify which side of the resort you want, if you want the ground floor, adjoining rooms, close to the garage, etc. Every room has a nice view. They aren’t Disney employees, and I’m doubtful a letter will do anything for your room. Just my opinion.

I doubt you will be unhappy with what you are given.

That's the third “upgrade” thread in less than a week. Maybe we should consolidate them into a single one, such as the “pool hopping” thread?

And the I use my “cute” kids idea

People need to realize only way to get an upgrade is out of necessity by Disney or some unknown act of pixie dust. They don’t happen that often. Nothing in a request is a guarantee.

You need to request in the category you paid for.
You can’t get upset if you don’t get room not in category you paid for.

I’m trying to learn by google, but where is the Polynesian in reference to this? We are planning to take the monorail.

Look for spot number 12 on the map, which is bell services (number 1 is the express cafe, which is where the SOG buses also are. That is a level below the bell services/lobby area). You would exit the lobby, walk past bell services, and continue on down the sidewalk to the main road. After crossing that main road you follow the sidewalk again as it brings you into the Polynesian grounds. (And actually, as you leave the Polynesian they have a nice little sign pointing you towards Shades of Green!)

Military Disney Tips does a picture-by-picture recap of the walking path here: https://www.militarydisneytips.com/Shades-of-Green/Polynesian-walk.html

It makes sense once you're actually there though :)

Thank u!!!

I guess it doesn't matter, if Disney owns the land. So we're both right, I suppose!

I'm really looking forward to staying there in January. I'm a veteran, and so we can book in September and January. I was hoping my son would join me (he's active duty), but he's not back from deployment and I have no idea when he can get leave. Maybe next time I can go with my son, as he hasn't been there since he was 10 years old. (He's 27 now).

I'm following this because I plan on walking to the Poly most days for transportation, and/or Trader Sam's!
