Free dining on paid or almost-paid trip?

How does a refund work if a free dining offer comes along on a paid (Inside 45 days) or almost (outside 45 days) paid off trip that already has DDP? (Ignoring the FD availability at the resort as this isn't likely to be an issue at ASSp.) Are the funds simply returned to the card or is something like a gift card issued?

The funds will be credited to the card that the trip was initially booked under. They say this may take up to 2 billing cycles to complete, but I have heard far more reports of within a week or two.
