Hey ladies I was wondering if any of you have girls in girls scouts? Natalie starts Nov 19 and just wanted some pointers. I know you freaps are full of info.
THanks
This is my dd's first yr in GS - she is a Daisy. I am a co-leader but thankfully, we have a leader who has been around the block. I am guessing that your activities might be different since your daughter is older. Here is how our meetings are run -
Greeting - they say the pledge and the GS Promise.
Sharing/Game Time: Then we have sharing time where maybe the leader asks a series of questions like what's your name, who is your teacher (they all attend the same school), what's your favorite ice cream flavor. We have a sharing stick that the girls pass around & you can only talk when you are holding the sharing stick. Then we might play a game like Animal Match Up (cards w/ animal names written on them, 2 of ea animal. Each girl draws a card. They have to make the sound that that animal makes & find their partner. This is to shake them up and get them talking to different people & to get to know every girl) or the to the left game (move 1 space if you have a brother, move 1 space if you have a sister, move 2 spaces if you have a dog, etc). Again, getting them to know each girl. Activity - For Daisy's this is usually a craft. One week we made Daisy Name tags that they wear each week - fun foam. One week we made a little poster with the GS Promise on it to help them learn it. One week the girls made cards for some soldiers. Last week, we made Daisy Door Hangers.
Snack - some troops do snack but not all.
Closing - Sing songs (again, thank goodness we have a leader who has been around the block b/c I have never heard of most of these songs) and a GS circle w/ a friendship squeeze.
We set it up so that our meetings are held every other Friday (no homework that night). Each girl/parent will handle at least 1 mtg a year and the meeting should focus on a GS principle or like for the Daisy's - completing projects to earn their petals (like badges) - things like "using resources wisely", "being a friend to every GS", "being friendly & helpful", "respecting authority" etc. As an older GS, I believe that there are typically a lot of service projects. This year is also a Service Unit Weekend for us (I don't know if this is GS wide or just for our council) which sounds like lots of fun. Our next meeting is the Daisy Fun Night so I know that my dd will have tons of fun w/ all the other Daisy Scouts in our area of town.
You can google GS questions and tons and tons of answers will come up. Your troop will probably have a parent meeting to discuss how things will go as a troop - uniforms, dues, etc.
Anyhow, I am by no means a GS expert and I had no idea that it COULD be so involved. I have already attended 2 trainings, a leader meeting and could have attended a leader/daughter weekend but my dd did not want daddy to be lonely so we did not go, plus all of our meetings. And I have not even done half of what has been available as a co-leader. But my daughter loves, loves, loves it and it is helping her to be less shy. Plus, she has been pretending to be a GS since she was about 2 when an older neighbor started going. I am sure that your daughter will love it!
