Freaking out about moving

I move to Florida the day after tomorrow. I'm totally freaking out. What if I can't take care of myself? I mean, I spent most of high school living in various psych wards... now I'm better and go to college and stuff, but what if I screw up and end up like I was? And then, my dog might not like Florida. She won't get to see her friends for a long time. And if I can't get my own apt what if someone on my apt starts messing with my dog? I'm confident I can get along with just about any roommate (a skill that is very nessecary when living in different wards all the time!), but my dog might not like them and then she'll be sad. And what if someone else's SD attacks mine at Disney? I'll get fired for saying anything mean to a guest, but I will not keep my mouth shut if someone hurts my girl.

Because you posted on the Disabilities board I will assume you have some disability but don't feel bad. People with no disabilities get freaked out about moving also.

While some employers may permit employees to have children, dogs, etc. nearby while at work, they have to be kept out of the way. Except of course guide dogs when guiding you. You will get moved, possibly demoted, or fired if you offend customers/guests just because they said bad things.

The moving van industry is one of the worst industries overall when it comes to consumer complaints.

My motto is: I'll never know I can do something if I don't try!

Think what a huge thing this will be for you if you can do it! Last minute nerves are common whenever you have a life-changing event happening.

You are certainly brave trying it, and you need to keep remembering that. Focus on how brave you are, not how scared you are right now.

Also remember, you are living a dream most on this board have of moving to Florida and being close to Disney!

Good Luck and best wishes!!!!!!!!!!

*hugs*

I agree that it's perfectly normal to be nervous and upset about moving.

As far as another SD having a problem with your SD in a way that would be aggressive enough to be a problem, a truly trained service dog shouldn't have that problem. I think you'll find that Nalla does fine with any roommates you might have for the same reason.

I don't have the same disabilities as you, but I've spent a good portion of my life feeling like I messed up and worried that I'll do it again. What I've learned simply is that it's still worth it to try. If in a worst case scenario, you have problems and you go home. It's not the end of the world and it doesn't mean that you'll never be able to live on your own or anything. It took me 3 tries to finish college. And that's okay. No one will think less of you if you get to a point where you realize you've hit your limit at that time. But it's important to remember that limits are not static. What you can't handle today, may be possible in a year or two.

Also, the biggest advice I can give you is to not sweat the small stuff. I'm currently living in NYC on my own and medically a mess because all of my energy and health is going to my effort to not to give up working. This means that I don't cook for myself. I order most of my meals. Pretty much anything I do cook is in the microwava. I use disposable plates (yes, microwave safe ones exist), cutlery, and really do my best to make things like clean up as simple as throwing things in the trash. Yes, it's horrid for the environment and expensive, but it's that or not being able to be independent (due to brain fog and fatigue even if I wasn't working, I'd not have the energy to do "real" cooking very often) and I see that as a smaller price for me to pay because the independence bit is important to me. So do what you need to do to make yourself happy and don't worry about all the details that someone else might see as important. You will be able to do it.

Good luck!

Also, while I know we don't have the same disabilities, feel free to PM me if you want to talk to someone or vent at someone with recent experience at going to a new place and getting a job alone while having a disability. (I graduated, moved to NYC, and started working at the end of May)

Nalla breathe in and out slowly and calm down. You are getting bit by the What If Bug. Dogs do not care where they live but do love their owners and are happy where ever their owner is at. I seen dogs on skid row with their owners so your dog will not care if you moved to Bulgaria. If someone messes with your dog your will come to us for legal advice, moral support and hugs. As for people messing with your dog at WDW or at work PLEASE talk with Kathy and Cari about what to do. Sometimes people are hurtful to pets and do not realize it. President Johnson once lifted a beagle by its ears and thought it was funny but it was funny how he did not get a second term of office.:lmao: .

Learn from your past and be prepared for relapses if any but really you have done fine so far so bury the past. Coworkers and friends do not need to know that you have been any place but a loving home. Enjoy life and move on. Wow our little Nalla is all grown up and moving, wow, so proud of you.:yay:

HUGS HUGS HUGS HUGS
and prayers and good wishes from Laurie.

Hi Nalla, of course you're scared and worried; this is a totally new experience! But so was college, and you're managing that. Your past experience does not define who you are! You and your girl are going to be fine. She loves you and is bonded to you- not other people around her. She's is trained to be around other people and dogs, and so are other SD's. You're going to grow from this, I promise. And the pp's are right- if you don't like it, then you can try something else. It's just life experience, not a lifetime commitment. Have fun!
