Fair warning: this past week was my first time back to WDW since about 2000, when I don't think they even had fast passes at all. If they did, I didn't know about them. This means that I am not comparing the different systems.
I had a lot of anxiety about using FP+. I was worried 1) about feeling locked in, 2) about it not working, and 3) about changing on the go.
1) the hour window was actually pretty cool. In addition to basically scheduling my day for me, the fastpass windows gave us just enough time to grab food, walk and enjoy sights, or scope out and ride other things.
2) We did not have one problem related to the actual system. The only snafu was that my dad changed FPs for me and my husband but that was an honest mistake and wasn't really Disney's fault.
3) On several occasions, I changed either the attraction or time. This worked very, very well. I was able to schedule things as the day went along. I am a planner but I like to also keep flexibility in the schedule because it's a vacation.
We chose not to get additional FPs after the three. Instead, we took full advantage of evening EMH, and/or rode things standby, keeping our FPs for must-dos.
I'm happy to answer any questions for those out there like me who have pre-trip worries related to FP+. I would do a trip report but they seem pretty involved and I should write my dissertation instead
