i currently have a 9-day ticket booked. We've decided to eliminate going to the parks on our arrival and departure days so I am going to reduce it to a 7-day ticket. The question is how do I do so and make sure that I am giving up my FP on those days and not the days we intend to be in the parks? Help and guidance is much appreciated.

Tickets are not purchased related to specific days.

So, BEFORE you reduce the number of days on your tickets (which I would not do, BTW**) you should cancel your FPs on the days that you will not be going into the parks.

If you have 5 days worth of FPs, you just need 5 days worth of tickets.
(It doesn't matter on which days of your trip that you have the FPs booked.)

**The cost of an additional "day" added to a 5-day ticket is just $10 per day.
So, if you reduce the 7-day ticket by 2 days (making it a 5-day ticket,) you will only be
saving $20 per person.

I'd think that it might be worth going into a park on your first and/or last day at WDW for
just $10 per day.

Totally agree with Robo.
Those extra tickets are pretty inexpensive and you may change your mind...
Just sayin'

Thanks for the fast responses.

We wound up with a later arrival and earlier departure than expected. Typically we do go to the parks on our travel days but I just don't think it is feasible this year. As a party of 7, the $150 savings is probably well worth it. I was considering booking EMM for our first day at MK considering how the kiddos love SDMT and was thinking that would be a better value for us.

Thanks again!

I totally agree with the EMM!
So hoping they still are doing it in December!
So, follow Robo'S advice, cancel FP+ first, then reduce ticket days...
