Found solution for microwave!!

We are staying at one of the cheaper resorts at. Anyway, the rooms don't have microwaves and to rent one from them you would have to upgrade to one of the more expensive rooms and even then it's another $10 a day to rent a microwave. So would be like an extra $300 and something for the week! Ouch, just to have a microwave.

So I had this bright idea to see if I could find a tiny one to take with us. Hubby was going to buy one for $25 at one of the stores here and put in his luggage. I told him to hold off on that....

Anyway, I posted a request for a little microwave on our local www.Freecycle.com group (where people locally offer free things to recycle or post what they are looking for) and got a response right away and voila! Now we have this little microwave that works for FREE to take with us to Disney so we can heat stuff to eat....WOO HOO! Doesn't take much to thrill me does it? It will fit right in to my husbands large luggage.

We'll get some styrofome coolers from the store stop after we get there to keep the cold stuff. But were all set as far as heating up food so I'm tickled about that.

It's a refrigerator you can rent for $10 a day, not a microwave. Microwaves are fire hazards or something, but they aren't allowed in the rooms.

Also...if you are talking about the cheaper resorts on Disney...ie, Pop Century, or one of the All Star Resorts...I believe they have microwave ovens available in the food court area for free. They also have toasters available as well.

It is a little bit of an inconvenience to have to go to the food court to warm up things....but, it does save the hassle of having to bring your own microwave.

yes def. use the microwave at the food court. It really could be a fire hazard, which if something did happen, you would put EVERY at the hotel at RISK. and also , sorry im not trying to be mean, but i suffer migraine headaches, so for me to be SMELLING food in my room would be really annoying. sorry,,,,,,,,but for SAFETY please please use the one in the food court.

Ok we did the same thing. We stayed at all star music last year and took a microwave in our suitcase but it is true they are not allowed. We had to hide it back in the suitcase every morning. I know it was wrong but we were trying to do disney on the cheap but in the end it was a lot more trouble than it was worth.

I believe all of the resorts have a microwave in their food court/counter service center that you can use. A toaster is also available there.

Microwaves aren't allowed in the rooms for safety reasons (electrical). Sorry.

I didn't realize they were not allowed. Hmmmm, you all would be shocked to see the private notes that said I should take it anyway Honestly I've been to a ton of hotels, resorts, etc that have microwaves in them and can't understand the difference between those hotels and a resort at disney regarding any fire hazard?? Wouldn't the microwaves in the kitchenette units be just as dangerous? Sounds more to me like they just want folks to RENT them instead of bringing their own.

For the person that said they get migraines from smelling food in rooms....um, we plan on eating hot food in our room and I imagine a lot of folks do. What do you do at home when you cook? That must be terrible to have the smell of food a trigger for migraines. I know how aweful they can be!

I had the same thought, about packing one from home. I checked them out at Target, and saw there a 'hotpot' for $10. It reheats up to 4 cups. It's not designed to cook food, only reheat it. So, unless I want to tote a cooler, I'm restricted to using canned soups, chili, etc. Which have a lot more sodium and chemicals than I'd choose, but it's still probably better nutritiously than fast food, and a lot more convenient and cheaper.

The difference in Disney providing them and a guest bringing one is the standard of safety. You might bring a perfectly safe one, the guest next door might not.

As to the smells I doubt many people cook in their bedrooms or in kitchens without a vent at home.

Personally it would not be worth it to me for liability reasons.

The only liability is that you might get caught. I personally wouldn't want to lug one down, but I have yet to hear of a microwave related fire epidemic.

Standard Disney hotel rooms aren't set up to accomodate cooking appliances. The regular hotel rooms don't have proper ventilation. The curtains and bedspreads absorb the odours making it unpleasant for other guests. Cooking in the room is no different than smoking in a non smoking room. Some people are very sensitive to odours in their sleeping quarters. That is why Disney provides a microwave/toaster in the food courts for personal use.

Wow, is this a new rule? When we went 4 years ago, we stayed at CBR and took a coffee maker and toaster to make breakfast in our room. We didn't want to spend the time in the morning so we could hit the parks early. Saving money was a bonus but not the main reason.

Anyway, we didn't hide the appliances. Nobody said anything.

I was thinking we should do it again since it worked out so well last time.

Most all irons and curling irons now have automatic turnoffs. The difference in liability is Disney allows one to use an iron or curling iron, hair dryer in a room. They do not allow microwaves brought in. If one causes a fire it's an accident. If the other causes a fire, then yes it's a liability.

GE had to recall thousands of their microwaves due to fires that started even when the oven was not being used. I would imagine a brand new microwave would meet all safety standards. However can one be sure of that with one that is being given away.

I can't imagine taking the time and effort to bring a microwave, I would rather eat PB&J, cold cuts etc.

My suggestion would be to call the resort and ask. They would be the ones to decide.

the only reason I ask is that you can hire one from ABBF (http://www.abbf.com/equipment.php?item=microwave) and if they were banned from any hotel room which didn't already have a microwave in it, then they wouldn't be doing much business. I don't buy the argument that it's ok to use them in the Holiday Inn but not at Disney, if they are banned from hotel rooms, then that would apply equally to all hotels, so where are these rented microwaves being used ??

I was thinking the same thing. There's a towncar company that rents microwaves to use during your stay.

A Baby's Best Friend will drop the microwave off at your resort for you to pickup once you check in.

Also, if your worried about smells how are you going to like smelling coffee brewing in the next room? They are now provided in the mod's along with fridges.
I've brought a toaster to WDW a few times. I've also used the toaster in the food court to toast bagels I bought at Super Wal-Mart other times when we've flown. I wasn't sure if the toasters in the food court were only for food purchased there but nobody seemed to care.
