Found old safe in my basement

Feel free to come visit me. RDA has a cabin up here so he's frequently seen around town. He's very much in disguise though so recognizing him can be a bit of a challenge. LOL

I'm still in for SafeWatch2008. Are there any bumper stickers? ;)

OH GET OUT!!!

I'll be there right after my cruise. Is he still wearing the military haircut he wore in Stargate? He looked better in that than the mullet, and I loved that mullet too.

Im stealing it.... but how come it doesnt have a little cruise ship??? :confused3 :guilty:

I hate boats. :p

He's totally totally different looking.....VERY hairy. He's grubby and looks like a hermit. Still love him? (I do...but I tend to like the rough and dirty look.) :lovestruc

I finally got the chance to check the thread! The suspense has been killing me all day!! Thank you so much for posting!

I'm loving the "bumpersticker" in the siggy!! I think I'll have to add it to mine.

This is so much fun!!!!

Good luck with everything, OP!!

I've read all 19 pages, and I'm hooked. I can't wait until this weekend. Please have your camera ready so you can share with us, even if it's empty.

Has anyone suggested calling that show "History Dectectives"?? Maybe they would come and open it and do a show on it.

Ok...add one more to the "hooked on Safewatch 2008" list!!!

I can't wait for the next update!!:cool1:

We have been living in our home for about 4 years now. We were moving some shelving and found an old safe in the basement. It is a very large floor safe. From what I can make out of the name on front, it is a J. Baum safe. The house was built in 1924. I have no idea when the safe was put in the house. The safe is locked and the combination wheel spins freely like it is broke and there is a small hole drilled directly above it. Someone tried to remove the door hinges at one point you can tell because the top one came off easily. But the door is still locked up tight. My husband tried to get a crow bar and wedge it out of the hole in the wall it is in so we could get a better look at it, but he can't budge it.

Does anyone have an idea what these safes were made out of back then? Steel, iron, other? Do you think who ever tried to get in got in? Because it seems like if they did take the door off, how would they get it to lock back up? I am just so curious right now what is in it! I am sure there probably isn't any cash, but just old papers would be so neat to go through.

I was curious what it could be made of as it might be worth having someone come and scrap it. It is VERY heavy. It is probably 3 ft tall at least and 2 1/2 to 3 ft wide. I am including some pics.

Isn't this exciting! My daughter says, "with our luck, we will open it and find someones ashes in it!" Ewe.

Tried looking up J. Baum safes to find out how the mechanisms worked, like where the bar in the door goes when it is locked but I can't seem to find anything. Maybe there is a locksmith dis'er out there? Any tips would be appreciated!! I will post how we make out with our find!

My husband says to me " I already know what you are hoping. That it is worth enough scrap for a deposit on a disney trip????" lol :lmao:

Safes like that can be worth a lot so be careful about how you try to open it.

We know. The safe itself is whats paying for all of us to to a Walt Suite Cruise. The stuff inside is whats paying for the year long trip at the GF Concierge! WOO HOO! :woohoo: :wizard:

I can't believe I just found this thread! I'm a neighbor watch person too, so I'm dying to know what's in the safe. :hyper:

BTW, does this thread like donuts....? :rolleyes1

We do need the energy to keep our eyes peeled on this thread.

I keep thinking that safe isn't gonna give anything up too easily. That sucker is huge and heavy.

I was reading up and it was mentioned that if drilling is misguided these safes have safety mechanisms that engages a 'lock-out'. This has been very intriguing and I love reading about these old safes!

Some of these posts are hysterical.

Love the Safe Watch 2008!:thumbsup2

A lock out?!?!?!? That reads to me like "No cruise!"

Oh, this is getting ridiculous. How can there not be ONE safe locksmith on these boards???? :rotfl:

Im pushing for dynamite, at this point. We just have no other choice. :rolleyes1 Get small dynamite sticks, light them and stuff them in that little hole. Then run....

Then come back and tell us whats in there.

We need something to sustain our energy while the OP finds a prison worker who's speciality is safe cracking, and can get out on work release!
Yes..why we haven't we busted a prisoner out of jail who could get this safe open for us?!:confused3 ..err, I mean the OP :thumbsup2 .
