I was organizing my wallet and junk drawer today and unearthed $557 in gift cards to various restaurants, home improvement stores, salons, and even Disney. I decided that I would put them in a recipe box organized by the type of gc ie. restaurant, home improvement etc.

Now I will keep this in my car so that when we are out and about that I will actually use these. :thumbsup2

I don't think I'd keep them in the car any more than I would keep $550 cash in there. Couldn't you just tuck a couple per week in your wallet?

Don't leave the gift cards in your car--they get broken into all the time. People often just go through neighborhoods stealing whatever they can in unlocked cars at night.

Glad you found your gift cards though. I am pretty diligent about spending gift cards and super good coupons (like free things to Victoria Secret, Bath and Bodyworks, etc.) I usually make a list of when they are going to expire and pile them up in order in a box on my kitchen counter. If it's a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts gift card, we load it onto the app so it's accessible that was as well.

I wouldn't put them in my car either, but I would put them in my purse so I would remember they were there and use them, I would also put a note in my phone (in my shopping list) so I could remember them when I was out shopping. :) Congrats on your find(s), use those things! lol

Where do you get $500+ worth of gift cards built up in a pile? Sheesh, my family must suck, LOL. I don't think I've had more than $100 worth of gift cards in my lifetime.

Some of them were for restaurants that we normally don't go to and are kind of far away from our home that we got for referring people to the guy that does our tax preparation. Others were for stores at the mall that my teenager refuses to shop at and therefore mom had to "buy" them off of him so he could go to the store he likes. I'm hoping to use those to buy gifts for others.

I think my cards in a small recipe box in my glove compartment will be safe. Our car is parked in the garage when I'm home and there is nothing left sitting out in my car ever. So...I think we're safe, but I appreciate the concern.

I just posted this because I thought others might benefit from the reminder to check their hiding places for valuable cash or gift cards that they may have forgotten about.:thumbsup2

Good idea! I keep our restaurant ones in my car hidden of course. A few are 45-1hr away the times we were in that area we didn't have the cards on us, but now its perfect we can stop and enjoy!

I've never lived in an area where things were taken from cars like this. Of course I always lock my car. Why would you leave it unlocked?

Op, I think leaving them in your car is a good solution. Just put them out of sight.

I always lock my car and it's been broken into twice. Once years ago, the window was broken. More recently, I don't know how they got in but the car was locked up. Where there's a will, there's a way.

The only reason I don't think keeping the gift cards in the car (but out of sight) is a great idea is because they were out of sight now and they didn't get used. I'd leave them someplace more open so they would act as a reminder.

I live in southeast PA, in a far out suburb of Philly. This car thing was happening on a monthly basis, if not more frequently in my old town. My neighbor's car was even broken into, and a mom in my mom's club from there just had her wallet stolen from her purse in broad daylight at a bounce place. Needless to say, we moved last year for many many reasons--this was just one of them.

I just sold a gift card to a website, it was $10 and I got a $5 check in the mail. But I had won the gift card online and the place is 2 hours away. I'd rather the cash. So that's another option.

My grandfather always told me to never keep anything valuable in the car, and to keep it unlocked. His rationale was that someone will try an unlocked door before they smash a window, and since there is nothing of value in my car, do I want the hassle of dealing with a broken window before work in the morning, or late at night when leaving a restaurant, etc. It made sense so I always followed his advice :) He was an appraiser for an auto insurance company and said that alot of claims come from people have left their spare change in the center console and people break in to try to find more money. So, the person ends up with a broken window and possibly other damage to the vehicle, for the sake of 67 cents.

Now that I can afford glass coverage on my insurance (wasn't an option when paying back student debt), and my car has automatic locks, I tend to keep it locked, but still keep nothing valuable.
