FOTL & Room Key - What are they scanning for?

Hi everyone!
I understand how FOTL works but I was wondering when the attendants scan your room key what are they checking for? Is it just that you are still a guest and the key is valid? I'm sure that they collect the data and use it to help in their market analysis. Just curious.

i know its to see if the card is valid but im not sure if its the marketing analysis.

i think during busy times you are supposed to wait an hour before you re-ride same ride....we were there over spring break and once and only once at the hulk we were told since it is so busy you were supposed to wait an hour - we said we didn't know - they let us ride again anyway.....we never questioned on anything else....
