I have booked a cat 8B room almost all the way forward on Deck 9 of the Fantasy for October 2013 but I'm second guessing my room choice. Seems like all the cat 8B rooms are either foward or aft. I don't really want to change it but, we've never cruised before and I have been reading that midship and lower decks may be better choice to avoid seasickness. Do you really experience that much movement on ships this size? Should I pay more and upgrade to a veranda room on a lower deck, midship? I kinda really wanted to sit in that huge porthole window and watch the ocean go by:goodvibes....but I don't want my familiy to get sick because of room choice either. Anyone have some experience they can share with a forward stateroom on a higher deck?

Do you have a history of motion sickness on large ships?

I get sick in the back seat of a car, small planes if I'm not flying, small boats...amusement park rides are a "don't even think about it" deal. I have NO problem on the DCL ships. THey have great stabilizers. On the Magic I have been almost as far forward as you can go. On the Wonder, I've been in the second to last aft cabin. Multiple decks, many locations...no problems.

Thanks for your reply! That makes me feel better...DH got sick on a small ferry once (and a little quesy on Space Mountain) and DS used to get car sick sometimes when he was younger but no major issues.

We went on 1st cruise in Feb.My husband and step daughter felt a little queasy, but not enough to take any of the 3 things i brought(the ship does have med.)Wish I would have given my hubby a kiss before we left and and dabbed some motin eaze oil behind his ears:rotfl2:We saw alot of people with patches on.They also have a sea band you can wear:).The little bit of "sea sick" he felt must not have been that bad because he wants to go on one again next Feb.

In October of 2011 we were on a 4 day cruise on the Dream in 7518 that is a category 8C very forward. We never felt the ship move the entire 4 days and we never took any motion meds. This was my 9th DCL cruise, so I had 8 previous cruises on the classic ships and I have to say that no matter where our room was on the classic ships and no matter how calm the waters we always felt some motion on the classic ships. On the Dream we just never felt any motion. Look at a deck plan and see where 7518 is in relation to the room you booked to give you a reference of the forward location. Hope this helps. good luck.

We are booked on the Magic for April 20th. This is our first DCL cruise and first cruise of any kind. I am a bit prone to motion sickness. I can't ride in the back seat of cars, I can't do any rides that spin too much (tilt-a-whirl gives me the tilt-n-hurl:eek:)and I'm always ready to get off the plane even when not looking out the windows. My wife gives me a hard time about it but at my age, I'm not going to grow out of it I guess.:headache: Is there anything specific that you would recommend that you know has worked for you or a family member in the past on one of these ships? I'm hoping that I won't have to take anything, but I want to be prepared.
Thanks in advance!

It does help! Tks...we are in room 9510....looks to be located in the exact same location but on deck 9.

If you are really worried about it, I would see your doctor for the motion sickness patch. You can always put one on if the motion bothers you. My dad did this on our October cruise on the Dream after feeling a bit sick at dinner the first night, then felt great the rest of the trip. The patches do have side effects, but they work. I get sick on ferries, in cars, on rides, etc and I've never been sick on a cruise boat, a tender boat, or even a jet boat (!!) with a patch on.

We have always cruised on DCL in forward rooms. The further forward the better. I start taking Bonine 2 days before the cruise...just in case. No issues for any of us and I am the only one who takes it.

We are in room 9000..as far forward as you can get!! and no reviews for it yet! Will let you know how it goes when we sail in September...I know other Dis'ers have been in that room but no one has put a report yet! I'm afraid all the navigators will be able to see right into our window :)

We were in room 8006 on the Dream, as far front as you can get, and we felt NOTHING! I too can get motion sick with the slightest movement and I felt fine the entire trip.

It's probably important to point out that a lot of what you feel depends on the seas during your sailing. We had an OTS hurricane while we were onboard, which churned up the seas some. I've read a lot that it's almost ALWAYS rough the first and last nights, when you're crossing the jet stream on the way out of/into FL. We were in 8504 (front corner) and my dad was in 9510 (forward) on the Dream.

We often cruise in a forward cabin and never felt seasick....actually we have stayed all over the ship on our various cruises and never felt seasick.

We have been in all sorts of seas as well....from calm to rough.

Sometimes people assume they ARE going to get sick or their family will get sick but you probably won't at all. Pick the cabin you want.....since this is your first cruise, go and experience it and get the thought out of your head that you will be sick and most likely you won't. If you are still worried bring medications with you just in case.

The Fantasy is huge and chances are great your family will be just fine.

I too worried about this when we sailed on our first cruise last year. We were on a high deck, and I had read the best placement for those concerned about motion is the center of the ship. The best thing you can do is be prepared! I took Bonine, starting 2 days before the cruise (it helped with the flight, too), and brought along my own green apples, ginger ale and ginger candy. I did feel motion quite a bit, and am amazed that some never feel a thing! However, I never felt sick because of it. Just prepare yourself and your family and everything will be fine.

We were on the Dream in December. We stayed in room 7012 which is forward. We did feel LOTS of movement!!!! The last night was really bad but we did not get seasick (thank goodness) and I am prone to seasickness. We are taking another cruise in Nov and I made sure that we were in the middle of the boat. Hopefully there we won't feel as much movement.

My husband and I sailed the Dream last December and we were front and center. my friend was midship. In our room you could really feel the motion. In her room you barely felt it. I have a disability and had a really hard time walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night because of the motion.

We would just take a gravol after dinner...only cuz we stuffed ourselves silly at dinner. Never got sick.

But in the future I'd prefer to stay midship.

Thanks for the great advice everyone!:goodvibes I think I'll leave our booking as it is and stock up on meds, green apples and ginger just in case, lol.

On a side note....this board is absolutely addicting!!! It's great to have a place to ask questions and have them answered by others who have been through the same experiences. :surfweb: Can't wait to hear about all the upcoming Fantasy experiences!!!! :flower3:
