I'm thinking of switching our ressies from POR to FW cabins.....MAYBE.....but I have a bunch of questions.

Fort Wilderness is very large. Where are the cabins located in reference to the boat dock to the MK and the bus stops to other resorts? Is the resort walkable? I know they rent golf carts, but I don't want to have to do that.

If we stayed in a cabin, I'd want to be with walking distance of both the boat dock and bus stop, but not too close to Pioneer Hall. I've looked at a map but can't make sense of where the cabins are vs. the campsites.

Any info would be great. Thanks!!!

Let me start by saying we've stayed at both POR and FW. Two VERY DIFFERENT places.

I love FW, I can pass on POR. It's nice but I would rather stay at FW.

That being said, FW is huge. You won't be able to get a cabin close to the dock and the dock is right near Pioneer Hall. The resort is walkable depending on where you want to walk to...campfire, pool, etc. Bus stop to the parks is a VERY long walk to the cabins. There is an internal bus system you can use but it can sometimes take a while. I wouldn't stay here without a golf cart, just because we had so much fun riding around in it and it made all of those areas very easy to access.

The last thing you want is to walk another mile after walking the parks all day. But, it is a beautiful place to stay and the cabins have MANY conveniences. I think the campsites are more on the east side and the cabins are more on the west side but that doesn't really matter. Check out the CAMPING IN WDW board for more info:D...oh and congratulations on your upcoming DISNEY BABY!!:p

I totally agree with jwfla422's comments. We love FW too and think that the cabins are terrific, but transportation in FW is a bit more cumbersome than any other WDW resort, particularly from the cabins.

I think that FW is a mile long as the crow flies. Walking entails following the roads through the place as they wind through the woods. You'd be walking quite a distance to get anywhere, even, depending on which cabin loop you are in, to get to a pool.

Jeff Spencer maintains a wonderful FW FAQ that will give you all kinds of information about Fort Wilderness and the cabins.

Regardless of where you decide to stay, I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Congrats too on your upcoming arrival. :)

I too love FW cabins. It's the only way that I will go camping. A soft bed, bathtub, stove, fridge, dishwasher, housekeeping (who also run your dishwasher for you).

If you're coming with a baby it's the perfect place. With the bedroom separate from the living/kitchen/pull down bed area it makes life grand. Will you have a car? If so, then go for it. You can drive to all the parks. Parking is free because you are a resort guest. It's also convenient to drive to the parks because then you don't have to tote around so much stuff. You just keep extra stuff in the car and then if you need it you can pop back to the car to get it.

It also allows you to bring your own food, so that you can cook if you want to.

Whatever you decide, you'll love either of those resorts.

The FW cabins are located in loops 2100-2900. The rest of the loops are for caming equip. The dock with the boat launch to MK, CR & WL is located in the Settlement area which also has PH, the Petting zoo, stables and a trading post.

FW is a wonderful resort and there is so much to do. I know many guest who just stay there and never go to the parks. We describe FW as an escape. It is quiet and relaxing. I would suggest loops 2100, 2200 or 2500. Request a cabin near the entrance/exit of the loop. These loops are close to the bus stop and a pool. The distance from the front of the campground (FD) to the Dock area is over one mile. You might want to pose more questions RE:FW on the Camping at WDW board. The transportation is not bad we have never had to wait more then 15 mins for anything. The cabins have a deck, full kitchen, LR, Bath and a bdrm, they sleep up to six. This is a great resort for kids.

POR is a beautiful resort, we stay there often, they have over 2000 rooms. So you will be walking to get to the bus stop and the main bldg. We love strolling the grounds and taking the boat to DTD. The rooms are just that a hotel room and they have recently been renovated. The foodcourt is one of the best on property, not to mention Bob Jackson in the lounge.

Transportation Theory - I think I have heard complaints on these boards about every resorts transportation and after working there and talking to guest I think it has two reasons. One is that we are used to using a car to pull up right in front of the entrance to anywhere and most people dont use public transportation, unless they live in a major city. I also know that guest are so excited and anxious to get to the park waiting for transportation seems excruiting. Relax the schedule is every 20 mins for an arrival of a boat, monorail or bus. But also give yourself and hour no matter where you are staying especially if you are trying to make a PS or meet at a specific time.

You cant go wrong with either resort it will just come down to personal choice for you. Have a wonderful time and Hey do a trip report when you get back so we know how it went.

We just returned from a camping trip to FW and I found the internal bus transportation (Yellow) was great! We were even at PI one night, four of us waiting for the FW bus, and a WL-GF bus came by. Since no one was heading to those resorts, the driver said "no problem, I'll take you." Talk about exceeding guest expectations!

When we're at FW we tend to drive to AK and MGM, and take Disney transportation to MK and Epcot.
