Several years ago we were granted an extra day at the WL due to an impending hurricane. That day we didn't have passes for the parks, so we took a stroll to the Fort Wilderness camp grounds. While we were there, we were able to visit horses housed in their stables. Does anyone know if this is still possible?

Absolutely. If you are just wanting to pet the horses or visit the petting zoo with small children, they have pony rides. If you are wanting to go horseback riding, they have rides daily at 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. You meet up at the Kennel, which is at the front of Fort Wilderness, as opposed to Tri Circle D, where the horses are kept. You can make reservations at 407-WDW-PLAY. It is a 45 minute ride in FW and it costs $42 per person with taxes.

Thanks so much for the info! For riding novices, would these be tame, manageable rides?

very tame - just don't let the horses eat while you are on their back - or you and the horse will get more than you can handle (they came up behind the horse and hit it - which makes the horse panic and they run)

so be sure not the let the horse eat anything.

over next to the petting zoo - is another couple of horses - that definitely want to be petted. they will come up to you. don't pet them unless you want to yelled at.

these are show horses and they don't want them petted. (okay friendly horse hard to resist)

so don't even go near them these days - despite wanting too...:confused3

if they don't want you to pet these animals - they shouldn't be housed next to a petting zoo - my opinion.

Those poor babies must be so upset seeing other horses get petted but they're left in the cold. That's sad.

Horses are very social animals. They do like to come up for a pet and a treat, and when they're done, they wander off to graze, or whatever. They're so neat.
