Fort Wilderness: golf cart necessary?

Can any of you FW veterans help me decide about staying at FW without renting a golf cart? Everything I have read has led me to believe that you pretty much need one to get around the resort, but if I have to rent a golf cart, it would be much cheaper to get two connecting mod rooms. Plus there will be six of us, so I guess I would need two carts? Any input at all would be greatly appreciated!

The golf carts are very helpful but you don't have to have them. Depending on what loop you are in there may be a bit of a walk to the bus stop but not more than 10 minutes I'd figure. Also as I recall the golf carts fit only 4 people so you would need two if you chose to rent them. If you are traveling will older adults I would recommend them. If you do choose a moderate remember that the walk to a bus may be rather long (similar to FW) if you are in a building farther away. If you are concerned about walking distance I would check out resort maps and request a building/cabin loop close to bus stops. I have had a golf cart for most of our FW trips but only b/c we were on the gold plan and my grandmother couldn't walk long distances - also it was fun to ride in when I was younger. Looking back on it we didn't really need them and probably wouldn't have gotten them if they weren't included in the plan.

Just a note... Internal busses run every 10 minutes in both directions. (Settlement and Outpost Depots) They also service the Meadows Complex, and other vital areas.

You really don't need one, but they sure are fun. Maybe just rent one for a day when you plan to do stuff at FW like the Marshmellow Roast!

They do have a few 3 seat carts now for a little more per day. You don't have to have them but we try to treat ourselves for at least a couple of the days when we are staying in the campground. Its fun to just drive around and look at all the camping rigs. It makes going to the marina area so much easier. They are wonderful when coming back after MK closes and the busses are so packed. However, they are expensive.

We just got back and rented a cart between 7 of us (4 adults and 3 children). Worked just fine. Sometimes we took buses and I was actually very impressed, didn't wait more than 5 minutes for an internal bus or park bus. We actually waited longer for the MK and resort boats. You can get along without one but it's nice to have it to just be able to come and go as you please and it's a nice way to tour the campground.
