We would like to stay in a cabin in Fort Wilderness. Due to the size of the place-do we need a car? We are spending most of our time in MK, so we can take the boat launch. We won't be going out for many meals, maybe two or three. How is the transportation around the campground?? To other parks?? Has anyone gone carless while staying at the campground?? Thanks, Trish :confused3

P.S. We have two children, 4 years old and 2 years old.

I wouldn't stay there without a car. The transportation system is just awful--you have to transfer from internal busses to resort busses to get anywhere. Even getting around within Fort Wilderness itself is a nightmare--we took the car to the pool!

At the time we stayed there, my son was 14, and we ended up renting him a golf cart just to get around within the resort. Strongly recommend you rent a car!!!!

We had our suv there and never used it once! We did rent a golf cart which we loved and the kids really enjoyed. I didn' think the buss system was bad at all, takes a bit getting used to at first but they are always going and pretty fast getting from one place to another.

We spent two weeks in the cabins and we never used our car. Our children were 6 and 3 (just turned). We had no trouble with the transportation. In fact we loved the fact that we didn't need to use a car! :thumbsup2

We stayed here without a car and I also think ou can use one. We had a cabin at the end of the road and it was a hike to get to the buses and pools. If you don't have a car try to get a cabin close to the bus stop, this would have helped!

We just came back from the cabins and rented a golf cart to get around the campground itself. I found everything to be pretty well situated. I saw a ton of buses stopping at the internal bus stops. We took the golf cart a few times to the marina and over to the Contemporary but you can also take it to the MK. We were in the 2200 loop and the cabin pool was really close by. The main pool was maybe 5 min away by golf cart. I cant comment on getting on the buses to the parks as we always drive, but the transportation inside the campgroung looked pretty efficient.

The golf cart is fun and helpful, too, but unless they've really changed things in a couple of months you can't take them out of the campground. You could take them to the WL a while ago but no longer. And I don't think they would have enough juice to go to the Contemporary or MK.

My post may have been a little confusing. The golf carts can get you to the marina, the boats will get you to the Contemporary and Magic Kingdom very easily. You would have to swim to the Contemporary without the boat. :rotfl2:

A few problems here. First, vehicles are only for going to and from your site. There is no parking at the pool area. There are a few parking spots by the Meadows trading post, but parking is limited to 15 minutes, not for going to the pool.

Golf carts can only be driven by licensed drivers. I know of no states that license a 14 year old.

The bus system, while not ideal, does work and is really not a major inconvenience unless you are really in a hurry. In fact, if you think about some resorts and the fact that you have to walk to the bus stop, it really doesn't take any longer at FW to get to a park bus than some other resorts. Case in point - if you are staying in the Country section of the All Stars Music resort, it is a real hike to the bus stop. Golf carts definitely make it more convenient to get around FW, since there is no waiting for the internal bus.

We have stayed at the cabins twice and never had a car or a golf cart.We used Magic Express from the airport. After you check in they will take you to your cabin in a van and pick you up when you are ready to check out and catch the ME bus back to the airport. You can only use your car to go to your cabin or for a 15 minuet stop at the Meadows trading post, you can not drive to the marina or tour the camp ground. The internal buses run every 10 minuets from the outpost to the settlement and back.the settlement is where the boat to the Magic Kingdom and the bus to MGM can be boarded. This is also where the Hoop Dee Doo dinner show,Crockets Tavern,Trails End Buffet and the Settlement trading post are.The Outpost stop is where you can get the buses to Epcot,Animal Kingdom And Downtown Disney. You will be given a internal bus map when you check in,study it well and you will find it is easy to get around a wonderful camp ground. The purple bus is the one that you will take to go back and forth to the cabins. Ask for a cabin near a bus stop. Loop 2500 is right next to the small pool and loops 2200 and 2100 are about 1/2 a mile to the Meadows pool, trading post and campfire. We love Fort Wilderness and I am sure you will too.
