Forms for school

I just tell them to go with what they identify most with. The lower portion allows more in depth explanation.
It isnt perfect but they are at least making an effort.
Not trying to be a pain- but my kids identify with both sides. I cook from both backrounds. They speak spanish and English. So why should they chose what they are not? Why is it either or? I would prefer to see it as a choice in the bottom- where they could chose more than one.
And making an effort? to what? Categorize us?

Boy I am a pain. Be glad I'm not filling out one of your forms. :rotfl2:

if you're hispanic at all, you mark hispanic. thats how i've always looked at it.

and all this is for is to make sure that all races are represented. is that really such a horrible thing?

Are you hispanic?
no. i'm native alaskan. (and on forms thats classified as "native alaskan/pacific islander", not native american. ) but i've worked in a high school, and i've had to have a lot of hispanic/half hispanic families fill out forms.

Well, it IS a big deal if the race you identify with is not listed or you are not allowed to choose more than one.:sad2: One day we will all be so mixed up that it won't make sense to ask.:thumbsup2

I am not sure why they would have hispanic/non-hispanic and then the choices to check. What not just have hispanic as a choice? Then someone could choose hispanic and white and that would take care of it. Anyway, if you choose white and black or white and any other minority, most places will count you as the minority race in demographics anyway. It's not like they can report they have 103 1/2 whites and 55 1/2 blacks;). I don't know what they would count someone who checked every box, LOL. Maybe I will tell DS to check all of them next time he has a form.:rotfl:

its called affirmative action. i bet if you looked at the demographics, there are fewer white children in the gifted program than other races. :confused3 how does that matter.

i don't understand why people freak out so much over being asked their race. its really not a big deal.

But how does that fit in with the lower income? You can be white with the lower income & that isn't affirmative action.... either way, it isn't fair. Children should be all held to the same standards they should not be treated different due to race or income, that is what is wrong with society. Actually, there are more white in the gifted than other races.. at least in my County.

How very true.. let us see.. we have 33 and a 1/3 white; 33 and a 1/3 black and 33 hispanic.. and 1/3 other.... :rotfl:

The way society is now, there really is no need to ask, but everyone does.. like I said, even Disney & Universal.. and I am trying to figure out why they do?????

Where I live they do "busing" to make our schools equal. My friend who lives down the street is white, & her DH is black. We live across the street from a school, mostly white area & school. About 8 years ago when she went to enroll her kids, she went to the district office and didn't think when doing the forms. She left the box blank, they checked white for her. Her kids were placed in a school about 10 miles from the house. I told her to go back and tell them her kids were black and she would get something closer to the house. She did and they refused to change it because "she" was white. She had to have her DH go with her to prove that she was telling them the truth. The kids "box" was changed to "black". While they didn't get the school across from us, they did get one 2 miles away.. amazing what a little check in the box can do.. now if they remained as white, there was no room in that school for them, but as black there was..
Now our schools are mostly racially balanced and we really don't need the busing anymore but the district still does it. ... and that is another reason why here in Lee County, they want you to check the box... they even go as far as white girl or boy, black girl or boy, hispanic girl or boy seats in the school.. they don't worry as much about "other" they get placed where ever there are seats, but the main three, they do watch. :confused3

I'm sure a lot of it is part of NCLB. Each minority is a subgroup, which means those kids' scores count more than white kids. The district needs to know for reporting purposes for NCLB. Yeah, it sucks, but we have no control over it. Take it up with the government.

This is the reason I stopped volunteering at school registration. We even tried wearing buttons that had VOLUNTEER in big letters and people still gave us a hard time. The person that gave me the absolutely the worst and hardest time I later found out was a teacher herself.

I may not like filling it out, but I know its a necessary evil.

I live in Indiana where you have to register for school each year. I have been registering a child for the last 21 years and you would think in all this time they would get a system down that works, but every year its still a parents nightmare.

I had a friend years ago whose child was biracial(black/white) She applied to a magnet program and had to choose one, so she chose black. Well, she didn't get in and discovered that it was because they had too many black applicants. So she went back and asked to change her application to white, since she is 1/2 white as well. They wouldn't let her do it though:headache: I think you can go from white to black, but not black to white, LOL.
