Great pictures, and a lot of people will tell you the snake's triangular-shaped head proves that it's
venomous
...which is exactly what the snake wants you to think, and a perfect example of the fact that most snake identifying tips are myths.
This is an Eastern Hognose Snake, and they are not only harmless, they're hilarious! If threatened, this snake flattens its head to make it look like a venomous snake. It will also raise its head sometimes and do its very best Cobra imitation.
If that doesn't work, it will sometimes flip over on its back and play dead. I'm surprised it didn't do that when you were prodding it with the stick. The fun part about the Hognose's "possum act" is that if you flip it back on its stomach, it will immediately flip back on its back and play dead again! Hognoses (they have a little snout that resembles a pig's) are a lot of fun, but like most snakes, they will bite if provoked. Usually they just leave.
