We just stayed at BCV & on our check-in day we saw a snake slither across the walkway just before the main entrance to the villas building. It was all black & I don't know what kind it was :scared1:
We tracked down someone that worked there & showed him the direction it was headed.
How common is it to see snakes at the hotels down there? I lived in Orlando for 5 years & never saw a snake

I used to see snakes all the time. When I was a teenager my mom stepped of the patio and into the grass in our yard and stepped right on a snake...which in term bit her foot! This was when we lived in the city limits of Orlando.

I wonder if the CM did anything about it or even found it? It was probably trying to make its way to SAB to cool of!

He acted like he was going to get help & look, but I'll tell ya. It was headed right for a ground level patio with chairs (beach towels hanging on the backs of the chairs). I was so glad NOT to be on the ground level :woohoo:

Reminds me of the one and only time I stayed at VWL. We check in and go do our room and find someone sitting on our bed! :scared1: Call the front desk and they say we have to come back to the lobby. Do that and get a new room. Go to it, find no one inside and get unpacked. Then I go to sit out and read on the patio and as I go to open the door what do I see but a snake! :scared1: :scared1: Needless to say I never went out to read. A little too much WILDERNESS in VWL for my taste. :lmao:

Give me an upper floor room at BWV and I'm a happy DVCer.

I saw a pretty good sized one as I was walking from the international gate towards the Yacht Club a few years ago. It was just off the walway as you are walking up the hill towards the bridge.

last may i saw a snake right next to my ground floor patio while at ssr.

at bcv two weeks ago i saw a three inch cockroach while walking down the path by self parking toward the main entrance. i whimpered loudly (ok i screamed), which frightened it and it scampered right toward my feet.:scared1: i then scampered right into oncoming traffic. the people in the car were like:eek:  . then when i looked back at the cockroach he was like.:rotfl2:

It was probably a Black Mamba - deadly poisonous!

NAW...just kidding. Probably a harmless Black Racer -- very common, non-venomous.

Snakes are very common at BCV, and many other places around WDW. I've seen several pictures posted here of snakes at BCV. I've seen both red rats (Corn Snake) and black racers. I'm sure there are other species as well. I have never seen a picture posted on the DIS of a venomous species, but I'm sure they are there. You have to remember that WDW is largely woods and wilderness, and all sorts of critters live there...it's their home.

Snakes won't bother you -- just don't step on them and don't pick them up and you'll have no problems. You have to be unlucky or seriously stupid to get bitten by a snake. They're just part of the landscape.

I'm much more concerned about the ducks swimming in SAB than I am about snakes. Every time I see those ducks, I get flashbacks of the duck farms on Long Island -- probably the worst stench I've ever smelled. YUCK!!!

I have no problem with snakes either. Completely harmless and they keep the pests away.

Except when you have a 5 year old Autistic child with a "no fear" factor  ALL snakes have teeth :scared1:
That's why all kids come from the factory with parents. If we do our jobs -- and I'm sure you do -- kids are fine around wildlife. Kids actually are much more sensible around wildlife than many adults.

OTOH, if we tell our six year-old to "Go hold the alligator's hand so I can take a picture," our kids are at risk.

And yes, I have SEEN that.

Dad said it, she did it, and the 11 1/2 foot bull alligator just laid there wondering why the Rangers were freaking out!

It's Florida, if it creeps, crawls of flies it lives there. Why not? The weather is nice.

I hate to break this to you, but Disney can't keep them away and telling the CM where it was probably did nothing. It moves faster then them... LOL! If it had been coiled to attack or a gator then they do something, but for a black garden snake... NAH.

but for a black garden snake... NAH.
Please keep in mind that Cottonmouths (venomous and very common throughout the SE) range in color from an almost-white gray to jet black, with most colors in between and with or without patterns on their skin.

If you aren't 100% positive that you know the snake's Latin scientific name, leave the darn thing alone! Relax and enjoy nature's show. Unless the snake is laying in the sun somewhere, it will leave in a few minutes anyway.

Remember the thread about the rodents? The snakes help with that pest, too.

I found this in my yard a couple weeks ago while mowing. Talk about scaring me to death. Luckily it turned out to be harmless.

"That's why all kids come from the factory with parents."

:rotfl2: Love the quote. May I use in when teaching "parenting" in my psych courses?

FL is packed with creatures as is all the Southeast. Personally, I enjoy the wildlife (although I would like for it to stay outside and not come into my room) :) . I am so glad my parents taught me not to fear snakes, etc. It allows me to enjoy their unexpected visits. We were taught to watch from a safe distance unless we knew it was a non-venomous snake.

I am curious though, what does Disney do to avoid fireants?
Does anyone know?

We had a snake during one of our visits to TL in the lazy river- Not sure what kind it was but the cms were chasing it down with a net from the side.

Having a frog phobia and suddenly seeing one at 5am when I stepped out on our 3rd floor balcony at the BWV's was :scared1: I guess if the snakes could make it up there I wouldn't have to worry about the frogs! :rotfl2:

Great pictures, and a lot of people will tell you the snake's triangular-shaped head proves that it's venomous :scared1: ...which is exactly what the snake wants you to think, and a perfect example of the fact that most snake identifying tips are myths.

This is an Eastern Hognose Snake, and they are not only harmless, they're hilarious! If threatened, this snake flattens its head to make it look like a venomous snake. It will also raise its head sometimes and do its very best Cobra imitation.

If that doesn't work, it will sometimes flip over on its back and play dead. I'm surprised it didn't do that when you were prodding it with the stick. The fun part about the Hognose's "possum act" is that if you flip it back on its stomach, it will immediately flip back on its back and play dead again! Hognoses (they have a little snout that resembles a pig's) are a lot of fun, but like most snakes, they will bite if provoked. Usually they just leave.

In the over 25 trips to WDW, many hotels I've been to, BCV is the only place I've ever seen a snake. Funny story-it was 2005 with Mom, who has a strong phobia about snakes. There I was, proudly showing off WDW and DVC, we stepped off the bus at BCV and there it was to greet us! What was also funny was that a woman in front of us had a similar phobia and screamed "Oh SH****", then clapped her hand over her mouth when she realized what she'd said in front of all the surrounding kids. When someone ran and told a CM, he picked up this whopping 18 inch thing and tossed it into the grass. We were all glad to see it go AWAY!

We saw a snake at HHI a couple of weeks ago. It was just a regular old brown looking snake. It was slithering along the sidewalk at Shelter Cove Marina. It finally headed towards the boat piers and went under one of the piers. I kept thinking wouldn't it be something if it ended up on one of those multi-million dollar yachts.
