Forgive Me DISers For I Have Sinned...3/9/12 Sci-Fi Dine In Theater

Wow, that cake is awesome. I am not even hungry and I want to eat it all now!

Yak and Yeti sounds really nice. I might have to consider this when we next go.

Loving your reviews and can't wait to read more.

I'm glad you got it sorted in the end. It is so annoying when you specifically check something and then rely on the information that your are given and in the end they try and move the goalposts.

I know! I wouldn't mind if they said it wasn't good for alcoholic beverages in the beginning of the meal---because honestly, I didn't expect it to be! But to change it on me at the end after you've already charged me? No ma'am!

PS: Did you ever find EOS? Or wasn't your trip yet?

Great updates. Can't beat breakfast at/from the Boardwalk Bakery :thumbsup2

I just yesterday made an ADR for lunch at Y&Y in August. Figured it would be a great way to get out of the August heat (or rain).

Breakfast from the Boardwalk Bakery is such a nice way to start the morning. As you'll see soon, it became a bit of a habit this trip.

Hope you enjoy Y&Y, we've been really pleased on our two visits.

I definitely enjoyed our lunch at Yak and Yeti also. It was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the park to air-conditioned restaurant and the food was good! :thumbsup2 Now I know not to expect alcohol to be covered under landry's card. I have the card also and have $50 saved up for coming trip.

I wouldn't expect it not to be covered. They told me it was because of the state I got my card in. Apparently, if you get your card in NJ, you have to follow the NJ rules (no alcohol) even when in FL. I'd check with your server, you may get lucky!

Thanks for the Y&Y review
We are really excited about our dinner their in May
I am 100% saving room for dessert though :rotfl:

I am really bummed we missed the cream cheese wontonw, but honestly...we had a deeeelish treat later that afternoon, so it wasn't all bad!

The cake was awesome. I considered not getting it originally (I mean come on, $35++ for two slices of cake) but after seeing Erik's reaction to it and tasting how wonderful the cake was, I knew it was the right choice.

Day 2 - A Snack Fit For Dinosaurs

When I last left off (sorry about the delay everyone, it was a busy weekend!) we had just finished up our free lunch at Yak & Yeti but unfortunately, had to skip dessert because we were just too stuffed!

We left the restaurant and did some new things in Animal Kingdom, including watching the Flights of Wonder show and playing some games in Dinoland. After about two to three hours had passed, we were feeling like we needed something to make up for the missed dessert at Yak & Yeti.

But what in Animal Kingdom had I heard rave reviews about? The jalapeno pretzels? Sure...but that wasn't dessert! The cupcakes over at Kusafari? Sure! But that was all the way over on the other side of the park and we still wanted to ride Dinosaur!

Hmmmm...I'd always heard about dinosaur-sized icecream cookie sandwiches and hadn't given one a try yet. And I do loooove chocolate chip cookies...and icecream...

and so the decision was made. We headed over to...

DinoBites

and got this bad boy...

Food-11-L.jpg

It was gigantic. :hyper: There weren't three "scoops" of icecream on the cookies as I'd read before, but there was a lot! Erik and I each took a cookie and then piled some icecream on and ate them like a piece of pizza.

The verdict? It was much better than I thought it would be. :thumbsup2 My first thought upon seeing these in reviews on the DIS were that I bet the cookies were cold and really thin and crispy and hard. These cookies were not like that at all. They were slightly warmer than room temperature. They were thin, but also nice and soft in the middle which was great because I hate a crisp cookie! This made a nice sized snack to split and definitely made me at least temporarily forget about my beloved wontons that were at this very moment being consumed by others still eating at Yak & Yeti.

Up next: A whole can of whipped cream!!

Day 2 - A Whole Can Of Whipped Cream?!

After wrapping up a productive and highly enjoyable day at Animal Kingdom, it was time to return to the Boardwalk for some R&R. The temperatures this weekend were expected to dip and it was already getting a bit chilly...but that wouldn't stop one birthday boy from the dinner he was so looking forward to. :rotfl:

This night was planned as an "open" night with no reservations or plans for dinner. I named a few options in the area and saw a glimmer in Erik's eyes when I mentioned heading over to...

Beaches & Cream

This man loves icecream, more than I do, and that's a lot. :lovestruc

Having watched one too many episodes of Man v. Food, Erik has recently gotten it in his head that he would be good at food challenges. He can definitely eat, but not award-winning proportions and he definitely is one of the slowest eaters I've ever met.

As soon as I said Beaches & Cream, I know what registered in his head.

He wanted to get the Kitchen Sink. That's fine, if we ordered it as "dinner" (hey, it's vacation!) we could probably come close to finishing it off, even if it meant having a stomach ache for the night.

Unfortunately, Erik wasn't a fan of this idea. He wanted to try to conquer this challenge all....by....himself.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! :scared1: Okay bud, it's your birthday.

And so we headed over. We checked in and found that we would have a 15-or-so minute wait, which was fine because it gave us a chance to play some air hockey. About 15-20 minutes later, we were buzzed and seated at the counter.

After placing our orders, these beauties came out.

Erik got the Kitchen Sink. He made some substitutions (like skipping the Mint Chocolate Chip icecream and the fruit toppings).

Food-20-M.jpg

I couldn't stop laughing as they brought this out. It was much bigger than I remembered. Erik wouldn't ever admit it, but I think having the lights and sirens go off and our waiter tell everyone that Erik was planning to eat the whole thing on his own was one of his favorite parts of the trip. I have a video of it and his face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning.

I got the No Way Jose.

Food-22-L.jpg

:cloud9: Besides the fact that this too was much larger than I remembered (last time I got one they were out of sundae dishes and I got a bowl, so maybe it was smaller?) this is the best icecream I've ever had. Maybe it's the fun of sitting in Disney eating it or maybe it's just that great, all I know is that this is a must-get for our trips. If you love peanut butter and chocolate (and come on, who doesn't?!) this is for you. SO GOOOOOOD!

I managed to finish close to all of it, which wasn't such a bright idea. I felt like I needed to be rolled out of there.

And how did Erik do on his Kitchen Sink, you might be wondering?

Let's just say, in the battle of Man v. Food...food won. :rotfl:

Food-21-M.jpg

All in all, Erik probably only managed to eat around half...which leads me to believe that between the two of us we'd never have finished it. He claims that it's the toppings that did him in (a whole thick brownie, cake, a Milky Way bar) but even if the toppings weren't there, I think those 8 huge scoops were just too much for him to handle.

He agreed that if he ever wants to try it again, splitting it would probably be the way to go. But that was the expected response. Aren't wives always right? :thumbsup2

Up next: Escaping the cold in the quietest in-park restaurant in Disney...

I think that's amazing that Erik tried to manage the Kitchen Sink all by himself - and, fair play to him, he appears to have done a sterling job :thumbsup2 I can't believe he skipped the mint choc ice-cream though, that's the best flavour :confused3

My DH managed to polish off a whole No Way Jose by himself before (and that was after eating an entree too) so maybe he's ready for the Man V Food challenge that is the Kitchen Sink :rotfl:

Great review!

I think it's hilarious that the before and after pictures of the Kitchen Sink look so similar. He ate a ton but it still looks full!

The Kitchen Sink may be a challenge best attempted by 4-6 people, but that might be too easy. ;)

Also, welcome to the Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich convert club! Aren't they amazing?!

Wow, that is some serious ice cream eating going on :rotfl:

I had a 'mini no way jose' after pigging out on a veggie burger and it was absolute heaven :cloud9:

That's hilarious your hubby thought he could eat that himself!! I have to get there next trip for that no way jose! OMG!

Him skipping the mint chocolate chip almost made me question why I married the man. :rotfl:

They are. I think having such low expectations for it made it that much more delicious!

We went back to B&C later in the trip and I got the mini No Way Jose. The regular sized was just tooooo big. Delicious, but too big.

That's hilarious your hubby thought he could eat that himself!! I have to get there next trip for that no way jose! OMG!

You really do have to get there next trip. For me, the best flavor combo in the world is pb and chocolate and this is no exception---truly spectacular! :thumbsup2

Day 3 - Did We Wake Up In NJ?

The third day of our trip was upon us! The original plan was to head over to the Magic Kingdom today but after seeing the forecast I knew I wanted to do MK on a day that would be warmer. So, we decided to hit up Hollywood Studios today.

We got ready, bundled up and decided that to get us going, for breakfast we needed to eat.....

THE SAME THING WE'D HAD THE DAY BEFORE! :scared1: :scared1:

So, for all of you may be wondering where the wonderful pictures of Pineapple Pancakes, Crystal Palace buffets and Stacked Breakfasts are...there are none!

We ate at Boardwalk Bakery every.single.morning. And you know what we had every morning? The exact.same.thing. Sooooo, if you want to know how breakfast was every day of our trip, please see my previous review of the Boardwalk Bakery bagel, ham and cheese sammie and danish. Yum!

So, onward we went! We arrived at DHS and had a great morning doing things like Toy Story x2, the Muppets, Great Movie Ride, etc. After running around for a few hours, we decided we needed to fuel up and headed to one of my must-do restaurants in Disney...

SCI-FI DINE IN THEATER

I know, I know. Lame, right? I can't help it! The feeling of being outside watching movies, the relative silence you get to sit in compared to the consent assault on your ears everywhere else in the parks...I love it all! Do they have the best food in Disney? Nope. Do I care? Nope!

We checked in and were seated within five minutes by a dude on rollerskates. I miss the days when they all used to wear them! We were seated in the back row of a car and told we'd probably be hitchiking with another party in front of us, but if that happened it meant they had to pay our bill. If only that were true!

We get pretty safe and basic food when we eat at Sci-Fi, so for an appetizer we decided to go with onion rings.

(Sorry in advance for the crappy pictures, you all know how dark it is in there and I only had my iPHONE)

Food-24-M.jpg

I know they look greasy, but they really weren't. We were probably especially hungry at this point because they were SO GOOD. Hot, crisp and most importantly when eating them the onion didn't slip out of the breading. That's the worst! There were maybe 8 rings in the basket, enough to get rid of the growling in our stomachs without feeling too full to eat our entrees.

Erik ordered a burger and fries. I thought for sure he'd order that new picnic burger with the hot dogs on it (I mean come on, he wanted to eat the Kitchen sink on his own) but he surprised me!

Food-25-M.jpg

He gave it a thumbs up. It was cooked how he wanted (we used the flashlight app to confirm!) and the roll may have been the new crumbly wheat ones everyone hates---but to us, it really wasn't bad at all. The fries came out nice and hot and there were a bunch, so that of course made Erik happy. Was it the best burger he's eaten? Nah, but it was on par with what you'd get at a chain restaurant in the area.

I decided to call an audible and go with something other than the burger. Instead, I ordered a reuben.

Food-26-M.jpg

Already at this point on the trip I was feeling veggie deprived, so instead of fries I got the cucumber salad.

The reuben was good. It was huge and messy because of all the dressing they put onto the sandwich. If I had to nitpick, I would say it was too much dressing, but I'm sure that's why some people love it. I only ended up eating half and Erik so graciously helped me finish it. Gotta love a man that can eat!

The cucumber salad was the real highlight of the meal for me. I like cucumbers and make a cucumber/feta/balsamic salad when I'm at home. This salad was cucumbers, red onion and a vinegar based dressing so it was a little different but still light, refreshing and deeelish. Next time we go back, I'll be ordering this again.

All in all, we had a really pleasant experience at Sci-Fi like usual. It was good service, good food and great atmosphere. I'm sure there are people who aren't fans of Sci-Fi but for us it's an oldie but goodie and we like to stop in every trip.

Up next: Standing on an observation deck in 40 degree temps with no coat. Fun? I think not!

If you are ever in Boston and you want a Rueben, I highly recommend Sam LaGrassa's. They have such awesome sandwiches and have been on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. Glad I already ate lunch or I'd be craving one now. They aren't open for dinner though, so if you're going to be here, you'll want to check out their hours to make sure you don't miss out.

Man v. Food did another ice cream challenge in NJ. I'm drawing a blank on the name of the place, but I'm pretty sure it was called the octopus (the ice cream sundae, not the place). Hubby and I went there the last 2 times we were in NJ visiting the inlaws. I think it's in Point Pleasant. Do you know the place?

Oooh next time we are up in Boston I'll have to check it out. The place with The Octopus was Hoffman's. We know it! Erik was so excited to see that episode, the one where he did the wing challenge at Chicken or the Egg in LBI and the Tony Luke's Cheesesteak challenge in Philly. I guess seeing local spots is a little more entertaining than those happening in places we have no plans to visit.

Yes - Hoffman's!! My IL's live in Toms River.

Do you know Ryan's Deli in Seaside? My sister's ex's brother is one of the owners and my nephew works there in the summer when he's visiting his Dad.

I wish I could see Triple D, Man vs Food... oh, and The Best Thing I Ever Ate... all in Disney! Seriously... that would be reason enough for me to finally give in to DVR... Take note, Food Network people! And Disney World could get some serious advertising!

If I showed my husband this review, he'd be jealous... I've never let him order a kitchen sink by himself, even though he says he can do it. He'd skip the fruit toppings too... not a fruity kinda guy. But he'd love extra mint chocolate chip... that I'm sure of!

Those onion rings look sooooo good, they bring a tear to my eye!
