Foreigners--Did You Know?

Really? Given the number of people that don't know how the fast pass system works still and the number of foreign travelers at WDW in a day I thought if anything my numbers were low.
Think about it - if it were a huge issue affecting thousands of visitors every single day, you would be reading about it over and over all the time.

The fact is that it generally isn't an issue for people.

Has the copy got to be in color - we are a little behind the times here and photocopier at work is black and white.

.

Most libraries have colour photocopiers that you can use for a small per page cost, if you don't have a local store that has a similar service. While you're at it, print several copies, so you can leave a copy with a trusted friend or relative while you are away, and a back up copy that you keep separate from the one that you carry daily.

A simple solution (but no doubt there will be a wrinkle somewhere) would be for WDW Reservations and TAs to make it clear to non-US residents on their reservation confirmation to "carry a colour photocopy of your passport" with you at all times should you wish to purchase alcoholic beverage. Its a good idea to have this with us anyway. In many (if not most) countries, non-residents must carry their passports in case they are stopped by the authorities. I think the confusion is that the policy isn't applied uniformly and consistently. However, if most of us know we have to have it on us, then its not an issue. Perhaps it is a testament to how friendly and relaxed our relationship with America is to us Canadians, Brits, Aussies and others that we don't actually think of ourselves as foreign visitors when we really are. :-)
I am American living in the UK. I book with the WDTC-UK. Before I leave they send me a pamphlet saying:
Alchohol
In the USA you need to be 21 years of age to buy and consume alcohol. The laws are very strictly enforced and it is normal for people to be asked for proof of identification with a photograph. For purchase of alcohol and tobacco in Walt Disney World and Disney's Vero Beach, you must show the accepted forms of ID; Original Passport or a copy of passport AND a government issued photo ID which can verify the person and birth date shown on copy of passport.

I don't have a problem showing ID as I use to be a Bartender and server. But I like to point out I have gotten ID in England as well. My 24 year old daughter was buying Malibu they asked her for ID, (UK driver license ) then said they needed to see mine too. I was quite pleased to look that young.

People really seem to be missing the point that it's Florida Law that Disney has to ask for this aren't they?

Florida Statute - Title XXXIV, Chapter 562, Section 11(c) specifically states that the following items are accepted as verification of age:

a driver license, an identification card issued under the provisions of s. 322.051 or, [...] a comparable identification card issued by another state which indicates the person’s age, a passport, or a United States Uniformed Services identification card [...]

This is not a Disney issue - it's a state of Florida issue. Take it up with them. While I agree Disney should be consistent, the CM's actually following the rules are enforcing Florida Code which I am sure they have been directed to do. Like many people have said before, the solution is to carry a color copy of your passport, which Disney has decided to accept (even though it's technically a deviation from Florida law).

If you don't have the ID's already talked about, you won't get served. (if they ID you)

If you're from another country, how would you get into the country without one?

If you're from the US, none of this applies to you. You'll just use your driver's license or state-issued ID.

The are from Canada. Some Canadians just have an enhanced Driver's License that works like a passport for land (and some sea) travel between the US, Canada, some Caribbean/Bahamas islands and Mexico. The fiance has one as we are in NY and I'm getting one when I renew. They are more convenient for those that travel by land or sea. They are also much cheaper.

To me the enhanced ID should work just like a passport and I wonder if some CMs just don't realize they are indeed a type of passport as the have your picture, issuing country, and birth date as well as all information that would be on your standard passport.

I thought that may be why they don't have one after seeing some other posters have brought it up.
However for non US proof of identity, it states WDW policy (state also) is certain documents thats what you would need. For the Canadian one to be used you would still need a second ID to verify the stuff on your enhanced DL.
(I am American with a UK DL, that shows her US passport when asked, because it is a DL from outside the US)

You only need a 2nd ID if you are showing a copy of the passport. I think the issue is a lot of people don't even though there is a such thing as a passport card. I'm sure they don't see too many in Orlando as most people would be flying if they are from Canada or Mexico.

Yes that is right. I think a lot has to do with the wording. It should read a International Passport, one that lets you travel the world. On a British forum they were very
miffed because it says 'government issue ID'(well my UK DL is government issued). It should read a US government issue ID.

My frustration with Disney is that I was told three different things. I was told it was state law, company policy and then federal law so I wasn't sure what was true.
I can't believe some states card everyone. What's the rational for that? Clearly when you're in your 50s and 60s you don't look under 21?

Apparently you believe the law needs to be rational. You were misinformed.:-) To be fair to the CMs, they're not lawyers, they're guessing for a reason the customer will accept, they probably even believe it themselves.

Florida accepts the following ID:
  • Any State Driver's License
  • Military ID
  • Passport or US Passport Card
  • State-Issued ID Card
FL Stat. 562.11 Selling, giving, or serving alcoholic beverages to person under age 21; providing a proper name; misrepresenting or misstating age or age of another to induce licensee to serve alcoholic beverages to person under 21; penalties.—
(d) Any person charged with a violation of paragraph (a) has a complete defense if, at the time the alcoholic beverage was sold, given, served, or permitted to be served:
1. The buyer or recipient falsely evidenced that he or she was 21 years of age or older;
2. The appearance of the buyer or recipient was such that a prudent person would believe the buyer or recipient to be 21 years of age or older; and
3. Such person carefully checked a driver license or an identification card issued by this state or another state of the United States, a passport, or a United States Uniformed Services identification card presented by the buyer or recipient and acted in good faith and in reliance upon the representation and appearance of the buyer or recipient in the belief that the buyer or recipient was 21 years of age or older.

Notice that number 2 ends in "and," so it is stated in the conjunctive, not alternative.

Honestly this is just Florida being silly again. My experience anywhere else in the Union is that an English driver's licence is good enough. Some places prefer a passport (Vegas and Atlantic City). It is just like when they made a law that says all non-Americans had to have an international driver's licence. The Canadian and Mexican Consular Generals sent a letter to the Florida Governor that the law violated existing treaties with both countries and so was escalated and the Federal Department of Transportation had to step in and squash the law.

A regular Cast Member would have no more experience being able to tell if a Washington DL was fake compared to one from Nova Scotia. And having seen many American DLs, some are not that secure nor have the standard security features that you see in ones from Australia, Canada or Britain.

PS. No need to worry about a copy either, a picture on your phone is acceptable as well.

Carmelhp, I was questioning the rational of carding 50 and 60 year olds. I was taken off guard when my daughter was asked for her passport to prove her age and now, I get that it is a state law.

The smiley I used missed its mark.

Not sure why you would be surprised about this. Its a CYA issue. Some places like Wagmans will sell alcohol if you dont have proof no matter ANY age. My neighbors mother (85) could not buy wine without ID

So just to make sure, you do not need a second form of ID other then the copy of your passport? The passport is enough to be served? I don't drive you see, so my passport is the only form is identification I have.

On the stuff I received from the travel company.
Original Passport or a copy of passport AND a government issued photo ID which can verify the person and birth date shown on copy of passport.
