FORBIDDEN: Travel Irons?

I have taken a travel iron/steamer on all 6 of my cruises without any problem. Not one of the room stewards has ever told me I couldn't use it either. I know they have seen it since I always leave it out to cool when I am done. I realize it may be a fire hazard but as previously mentioned, so are curling irons and things of that nature. Besides, I am smart enough to unplug it and leave it in a safe place when I am done. I think if you want to take your travel iron you should.

I really hope others don't agree with this. I'd love to see the stats on how many housefires have been started with an iron vs a curling iron. Most curling irons sit on a countertop - even when someone forgets to unplug them. Most irons are sitting on an ironing board or on clothes. There aren't any ironboards in the staterooms, so presumably you are doing it on the floor (on flammable carpet) or on the bed (on a flammable comforter/blanket.) I realize that some people may think it is an insult to their responsible natures to suggest that they should defer to the request to not have an iron in their rooms, but I can assure you that even in the Navy, irons are deemed a firehazard. In fact, each and every electrical device has to be tested by the ship's electrician and tagged as to its allowability on ship so we're probably fortunate that we don't have to go through that for all of the electrical devices people bring aboard!

The thing that makes irons more of a fire hazard is the amount of electrical energy they use (measured in watts). All electrical items in the USA run on 110 volts but each uses power at a different rate based on other factors (such as size). A curling iron gets hot but does not use as much energy as an iron. Having said that it too can cause a fire if left on.

The circuits in the rooms are not designed to handle a lot of power use. They may be fine and most times can be used "without any problem" but eventually the use takes a toll on the wires in the circuits. Have you ever used a small extension cord to run a big piece of equipment? If you have then you would have noticed that the cord gets hot after awhile. Continued use like this will cause the cord to fail eventually.

It is more convenient to have an iron in the room but the safe thing is to use the one in the laundry. Besides they ask you not to do it.

How bad would it be to be known as the one who burned down the Magic!
:guilty:

FLEXSMOM: I agree with you.

Even if I did not know the hazards I do not bring an iron because they tell me not to. There must be a good reason for their rule. It is NOT because they want to make their passengers lives hard or miserable. They are in the business of making us happy AND SAFE!
:confused3

Only one person said do it anyways. I might have broken the rules, but only by accident, this board is the only place that I have seen that said my steamer was not allowed, now that I know that, I won't take it. I am sending an email asking about the coffee maker.

I don't think most people would break the rules, my question pertained to what IS the rule.

they dont list travel coffee pots as a no-no in the cruise docs, but i think that they dont believe anyone would bring one (coffee is available 24/7 all over the ship, and room service brings it in thermal carafes so it stays hot).

i can personaly attest to the damage an iron can do. i had unplugged and put away one, my son (a toddler at the time) climbed up and plugged it back in on the floor. we had an iron shaped burnmark on the carpet, the padding and the subflooring (the smell was not to be believed and took forever to go away :guilty: ), i'm just thankful a fire did not result. i can only imagine how many adjoining rooms on a ship could be affected via the air ducts (can you imagine the bill for repair and fumigation, let alone if someone else can downgraded due to it?).

I iron practically everything. I packed my iron last year and didn't have a problem. Is this new?

Same rule was in place for my first cruise 4 years ago.....no irons in the staterooms...you can bring it and use it in the laundry room but I hate to think people are actually using them in their staterooms!!!! What a disaster that could turn out to be for 2000+ people!
Personally I would never ever iron on a vacation but to each their own LOL...I needed one thing dewrinkled and I sent it out to be pressed the first night!

I had a small pocket knife (the little swiss army ones with the blade less than 2" long) confiscated and returned after we got back to port. I have also read on the board where people have had corkscrews removed from their luggage and returned when they get back. I don't know if they catch everything but they run every carryon through X-ray machines before you can even get into the terminal and they do confiscate the same sort of the things from carry-on bags that the airlines do.
That's strange...I was explicitly told that it was perfectly acceptable to bring my little keychain size Swiss Army Knife onboard. Don't really see what sense it makes to worry about a little pocket knife when you have access to steak knives onboard.

While you're right that "most" won't break the rule, the life lesson I learned on my first trip to WDW was that "No mater what the rules are, someone is going to break them".

Can you bring on toy swords for Pirate Night? pirate: My kids have thier costumes all set for the cruise and I don't want to bring them if they are forbidden.

Thanks!

If they are plastic I don't see why not as plastic wouldn't show up on the x-ray machines so unless they opened your luggage they wouldn't see them.. They sell plastic swords in the store so I don't see why they wouldn't allow them.

I had zero issues with a soft plastic sword (about 18"-24" long) packed in luggage and wearing on pirate's night.

I can bring my hair flat iron though right? Trust me no one wants to see what I look like without it.

Yes, you can bring it. But after 7 cruises, it's funny to see how many people give up on hair dryers, curling irons, flat irons about half way through the cruise. And most of the women look far better the last half of the cruise :cool1:

I've always brought my small plastic travel steamer with me on cruises and was told my both DCL and Princess that this was allowed just not any kind of travel iron. It's always left right out in view and no one has ever said anything to me. My steamer doesn't get hot and I can put my hand right up to it as long as I don't touch the steam. This is going to draw as much power as the coffee pots that people bring so I'm not quite sure what the problem would be.

I am on the MAGIC right now and brought mine and use it daily..I am VERY careful with it of course, and couldnt live without it...

OK, just got a return email from DCL. According to them my steamer is a no no as is my coffee pot. They ok'd my hot curlers. When I asked for a list of what is ok vs not ok, they sent me to Dreams Unlimited (my TA). I will send DU an email tomorrow. I don't know why DCL would say to contact my TA instead of them, oh well.

I hope you are at least using it in the laundry room and not in your stateroom...they are banned for a reason...even if you think you are careful with it accidents still happen....houses burn down every day by people who think they are careful!

The question is, can hundreds of other people live WITH it? There reallly is a reason to ban these on a ship. You can't evacuate to the parking lot if there is a fire.

(That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.)
