Here is your assignment should you (PLEASE) accept it...

Egads, my travel iron is forbidden according to this board, does anyone know where I find what else is forbidden? :confused3

I would have packed my travel steamer because it is something I always pack. I get that it is a fire hazard but do not get why curling irons aren’t. What about hot curlers? What happens to forbidden items that are packed?

PLEASE people help me!

Irons are not allowed because they are a fire hazard. I completely understand why they are not allowed. There is at least one (if not more) iron and board in each laundry room and I have never had a problem being able to use them. I'd much rather do that than run the risk of someone forgetting to stand the iron up or turn it off and setting the ship on fire.

Pretty much the standard things that aren't allowed through airport security are also forbidden: knives of any type (including pocket knives), firearms, corkscrews, pointy scissors, explosives of any type.

Additionally, according to the DCL site coolers aren't allowed either unless they are needed for medicines, baby food, or items needed for those with dietary constraints. In addition, they say that coolers filled with personal items such as soda, candy, chips, etc., can not be brought on board, nor can open bags or containers of snack items though we have brough snacks on in the past and never had a problem. We also brough a case of soda with us the last time and that was ok, though we did not have it in a cooler. I have heard on the board that people don't have problems with soft sided coolers but I have never tried that.

In another thread someone mentioned that a list of restricted items is posted at the cruise terminal. I cannot find that list anywhere on DCL's site which is too bad as I think it would be very helpful to have it there.

Security isn't quite as strict as what you find at an airport. Small pocket knives and corkscrews are permitted. Obviously firearms and explosives are not.

some lines are getting more restrictive-we went sailing to alaska last year, and people buying "ulus" (a traditional alaskan cooking tool) were advised to have them mailed to themselves from the store they were purchased in because the cruiseline would confiscate them and you would have to retrieve them the day of disembarkation (AFTER the luggage was already collected and sent to the airport, and no way the airlines allowed these to be carry-on).

according to the dcl docs i just got, under "what not to pack" (in addition to stuff already mentioned):no swords, daggers or weapons of any kind. it also says steamers are only permitted to be used in the laundry rooms.

I had a small pocket knife (the little swiss army ones with the blade less than 2" long) confiscated and returned after we got back to port. I have also read on the board where people have had corkscrews removed from their luggage and returned when they get back. I don't know if they catch everything but they run every carryon through X-ray machines before you can even get into the terminal and they do confiscate the same sort of the things from carry-on bags that the airlines do.

Our first cruise, they went into my dh's locked checked luggage and removed his leatherman before it was delivered to our room. Just an fyi that it isn't just your carryon that will be searched.

Oh my gosh! Do they really search everyones suitcases? :rotfl2: I would hate to have that job! I do usually take a clothes steamer. Should I leave it at home?

No kidding! Can you just imagine...well, since this IS a family show, I'll just say....I agree 110%...don't want THAT job!!

I, personally, don't think you'd need your steamer, and you can use that room for more things coming home!! All I've done is take a squirt bottle and squirt all my hanging clothes when I unpack....if the wrinkles aren't gone by the next day, you can always go visit the laundry room and touch them up!

I always travel with a small nail scissor and my husband packs a regular sized scissor in the checked luggage. We had no problem with either of these, and neither were confiscated.

I iron practically everything. I packed my iron last year and didn't have a problem. Is this new?

No,this was always in place....Maybe you got away with it, but please don't now that you know...It really is a potential fire hazard.. :goodvibes

and it can be a huge hassle if the port authority gets to hold the item. (again this was on our alaskan cruise)-there were a couple of sports fisherman who had been mistakenly advised by their travel agents that they could bring their sports knives, check them in with the cruise line and check them out for their fishing excursions. when they went attempted to do this, the knives were confiscated and given to the port authority to hold. upon return they attempted to collect these items but found that the office that handles it was closed on weekends and they would have to try and arrange everything when they got back home by phone/mail. they were very unhappy travelers.

You can bring an iron and steamer on board, you just can't use them in your room. You have to iron or steam in the laundry room. The iron provided in the laundry room is fine unless you have really delicate fabrics because the temperature control doesn't seem to be too accurate.

On my first two cruises, I brought (and used in the laundry room) my own iron. On my next two cruises, I used the ship's iron and had no problems at all. Since all the resorts now provide irons and ironing boards I leave mine home.

I have taken a travel iron/steamer on all 6 of my cruises without any problem. Not one of the room stewards has ever told me I couldn't use it either. I know they have seen it since I always leave it out to cool when I am done. I realize it may be a fire hazard but as previously mentioned, so are curling irons and things of that nature. Besides, I am smart enough to unplug it and leave it in a safe place when I am done. I think if you want to take your travel iron you should.

I can bring my hair flat iron though right? Trust me no one wants to see what I look like without it.

I am an airport screener.

You can find out what is allowed on aircraft at http://www.tsa.gov

We do do NOT prohibit travel irons although we will examine them closely.

If you must take a knife or pointed scissors on board an aircraft you can place them in checked baggage. Many items are allowed in checked baggage but NOT in carry-on and vice versa. So check the web site before you pack.

I cannot speak for what DCL allows.

Thanks for the website, its full of great info. The one thing some people don't think about is that on a plane, you don't ever have access to your checked luggage. Obviously, on a cruise, you do have access, so even if you don't personally carry on a knife, you'll have it soon enough.

I'll send an email to guest services for DCL. Maybe they have a list they can send me. If they do send me one, I will type it up and post it.

Thanks for all the help. Since they don't want the steamer, I will leave it home. No one said anything about the travel coffee pot. It has an auto off, so I will spefically ask in the email about that and the hot rollers.

Thanks again. It sounds as if DCL is much more strict than TSA.

Keep in mind, things are a little different with a cruise ship than with flying. There are plenty of things allowed in checked baggaged that are not allowed in carry-on because while you're on an aircraft, you can't access your checked baggage. However, a cruise ship delivers your checked baggage to your cabin, so anything in you checked bagagged is accessable once on board.

So when it comes to packing for a cruise, the restrictions on what you can and can not carry on board an aircraft are closer to what you can and can not have in checked baggage for a cruise.
