Forbidden Journey compared to Mission Space.

What do y'all think is the best medicine to take for motion sickness? I was thinking of going to the Dr. before we leave to ask for a medicine that helps or prevents motion sickness on rides. Is Dramimine or Bonine sold in stores as good as anything a Dr. can give? Without any meds for motion sickness I don't think I will ride some of these rides and I hate to miss out.

RebYork - I purchased Meclizine from Amazon before my trip last month:

Sorry, I'm blanking...what's BG?
I'm thinking Busch Gardens. I was not a fan of this park when I went in 2010. Could be different now though. I guess I am so used to USF and WDW standards.
Oops, sorry just saw this was already answered :)

I am also a member of the motion sickness club. I cannot ride Mission:Space. I've only done Green and did not like it at all. I'm like the OP in that I can do roller coasters but not anything that spins or some simulator rides. I have to close my eyes on parts of simulator rides like Simpsons but I am surprisingly fine on Forbidden Journey. Seems like we all have different tolerances..you might just want to try it out to see for yourself how you do. I completely understand not wanting to ruin your day though if you do get sick.

I've not read anything as its late and I'm lazy tonight.... Sorry if it's already been said.

As someone who does and does not suffer from motion sickness- FJ gets me, but ONLY on the projector screens. All I have to do is close my eyes and in fine on those parts. Everything else is fine for me. My sister rides it but only once as she's very prone. She can't do nearly anything at UO but will do FJ once. Mom did it once and it got her pretty good, but she can't ride hardly anything anymore.

Simpsons gets me eyes open or shut.

I can only ride the dragon once or I'll get sick.

Mummy and other flat coasters I could ride a billion times.

Spider-Man I'm pretty okay with unless I already feel bad.

Going to try dram this trip and see how I do. It just always makes me SO sleepy.

You're so right, everyone is different to what they can tolerate. I will never go back on Simpsons as eyes closed or open it makes me bad. I do have vertigo which is why eyes closed doesn't help on that one.

Other simulators I am totally fine on........the glasses seem to change things.

So, yes, I always tell people you have to try for yourself.......they may be fine!

This is the same reason I don't take dram. Earlier in the thread there was a post to a med (can't think of the name at the moment) sold on amazon. I was reading reviews and the good thing about it is that it's only 12 mg so you can take one and it is like half a dose of dram. Maybe it won't make me as sleepy.

Oh shoot I can take half a Dramamine and be passed out cold for 12 hours I used to use it on vacation just for that reason. I don't sleep well away from home.

I have noticed that some places sell a less drowsy version but I haven't stopped to see what it is or if it's just less medicine. I'll probably try that. Boy do I miss being a kid! I never had these problems

LOL, I know what you mean! There was this ride at a nearby park called the Enterprise. It was like a big ferris wheel but the "cages" went upside down and spun all around. I rode it eleven times in a row once. I would probably get sick just looking at the ride now.

My son takes benadryl for his allergies and it doesn't even phase him. I'd be sleeping on the couch!

Thanks for the replies. I got some meclazine from the Dr. yesterday. I hope it helps. I still may not try FJ. Just not worth feeling terrible.

I have two stages of benadryl. Knocked out and if I keep myself awake for 30 minutes I get into super hyperactive mode. It's kind of humorous.. remember the squirrel from Over the Hedge?

I hope you end up being able to do it! My mom suffers from vertigo mildly and is able to do FJ, but she doesn't do it very often. However, I completely understand where you're coming from. I used to save hulk for the last ride because it would HULK SMASH and cause a bad headache which sometimes would turn to a migraine.

My wife and kids love the HP ride Forbidden Journey which I will not ride because I am scared of getting motion sickness. I have been on rides such as Spiderman and Transformers and they don't bother me. I rode Mission Space a few years ago and it nearly got the best of me. I really want to ride Forbidden Journey with my family but will it leave me with the same terrible feeling like I had with Mission Space? Btw: I can ride every rollercoaster and have no ill feelings. It just seems to be rides that spin alot or intense simulator rides like Mission Space. I have never rode the Simpsons ride either and would love to give it a try. Is it as bad as these rides? Thanks!!
Which Mission Space did you do? I forget - are they green and orange? One spins and one doesn't.
If you rode the one that spins (which ever is harsher, orange?) I would say it is DEFINITELY more intense than Forbidden Journey. If you rode the easier one - than I would say FJ is more intense.

FJ actually moves around a lot as opposed to other simulators which mostly move the angle you are facing. There are some moments in FJ that put you far onto your back - nearly upside down.

The first time I rode FJ was first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and I was a little queasy after. Not like ruin-the-day sick, but it took me an hour or so to feel normal. Since then I have ridden it many times (NOT on an empty stomach) and I've been fine - though I don't think I would ride it several times in a row. I have ridden Simpsons many MANY times and it doesn't bother me at all.
As a point of reference, I rode MS when it first opened (only the intense one) and it made me slightly sick for HOURS afterward.

For what it is worth, FJ is AMAZING - even the first time I rode it and got a little nauseated, it was worth it.

Oh, and meclizine works great for me - I now take one every morning when I am at any theme or amusement park.

I know that the ride has 4 to a row on a single arm - do you ever see any other groups when you're on the ride?

Sometimes I even have difficulty on Soarin' at WDW. I find that it helps to look the feet of those in the row above me if I start to feel weird. When the ride first "lifts off" I usually close my eyes.

I have real trepidation about Forbidden Journey - I'm such a wimp. I don't do roller coasters either

I am susceptible to motion sickness, usually on rides that go round and round. Rollercoasters are no problem. I was very ill after Mission Space Orange and will never do it again.

Forbidden Journey is hit or miss for me. The first time, it was more intense than I was expecting but I didn't feel sick at all. Last trip, I found I had to close my eyes at a few parts but was ok when I got off. I think it's worth trying.

Simpsons is a long ride and I do have to close my eyes at different parts. I get a little sweaty too, but am usually ok when I get off.

I haven't lurked these boards for too long but during the time I've been around, this seems to be the most discussed topic lol. Everyone is different, but I'd lean towards the safe side as well if you have motion sickness issues and you're really worried about it. Or at the very least, save it for your last ride of the day. As for my experience, I definitely felt wooziness during the screen parts on FJ but overall my enjoyment exceeded my discomfort. My wife would disagree. She also struggled on Simpsons, though I was fine there. We also both took Dramamine as soon as we got to the park. It helped me for sure but she still didn't care for most of the simulator rides.

It's a different medication. Regular Dramamine has 50mg of Dimenhydrinate. The "Less Drowsy" version has 25mg of Meclizine HCI. Emphasis on the "less drowsy" instead of "non-drowsy".

Any of the drugs they sell over the counter for motion sickness can cause drowsiness because they are all antihistamines of some sort. You would also get a similar anti-motion sickness effect by just buying the cheapest generic benadryl (diphenhydramine) you can find and taking it according to the box directions.

If you want to avoid side effects, try the sea bands. They don't have any and can also be used by kids, elderly and pregnant women (which are 3 groups that most motion sickness drugs typically cannot be used in!)

As near as I can find quickly, sea bands have only been tested for morning sickness. They're not likely to hurt you, but I remain dubious.

Anecdotally, I can say that many friends and family members have found them helpful, but I don't need them since I seem to have an iron stomach. :) We also don't sell them in the pharmacy I intern at, so I've never actually sold them to any patients, or had anyone ask about them.

As I have plenty of actual pharmaceutical products to research, I admit that I have not really looked into the scientific literature behind sea bands beyond their basic mechanism of action, so you may be right. They may do something, or it may just be the placebo effect (which is often absurdly strong) but if they work for you and don't knock you out during your day at the park, then go ahead!

I have tried those when pregnant, at sea, on rides, in cars.........never helped me once. Don't know anyone they did help actually.

One of these all in the mind things.

I take vertigo meds on occasion, if I'm not taking those I find Bonine works reasonably well, not for Simpsons though...........
