Interesting idea. If a whole building is non-smoking and the balcony is part of the building, how does DVC justify that? I actually would have no problems if someone was out on the sidewalk sitting on one of the benches smoking a cigar, but I would have an issue with them sitting on the balcony above or below mine.

It boils down to interior vs. exterior of the building. I travel alot for business and you can certainly tell a difference in the smoking rooms in regards to the smell. It is retained in the carpet, fabrics and such. The balconies don't have anything to retain the smoke. My guess that since it is not a maintenance/marketing issue Disney could care less. I guess you could choose to go inside if it offends you that much. As I stated previously though, there is nothing wrong with consideration from the Cigar Smoker by talking a walk somewhere secluded. But you have to be careful.......If you walk within the complex then you have everyone complaining by leaving a trail of smoke.......

Smoking is allowed on all balconies at all the WDW resorts.

I don't think it is allowed on balconies of non-smoking villas, hotel rooms, etc. It's part of the entire "no smoking" concept.

Very simple: Smoking rooms have smoking balconies. Non-smoking rooms have non-smoking balconies.

Therefore, if I see someone smoking on a non-smoking balcony I will assume they are on fire and pound them with my fully loaded SuperSoaker.

No such thing as a non-smoking balcony. Just got that answer from my DVC guide.

My DD is highly allergic to smoke. We always have non-smoking for medical reasons noted on our reservations. She has been hospitalized for smoke problems. We also like to leave our windows open at DVC and let in fresh air, but if I ever smell even a hint of smoke I am rushing around to shut them all and then I am calling the front desk if we are in an entirely non-smoking building. However, if you are in a smoking room I would say go for it. :thumbsup2 I agree that the balcony of a smoking villa is smoking and a non-smoking villa is non-smoking, just my opinion.

This whole discussion is probably quite different for OKW than it is for the hotel type DVC resorts. At OKW, entire buildings are non-smoking, while at the other hotel type resorts, only floors are considered non-smoking.

The question was what would I call the front desk about.... Simple answer, I would be calling because I could smell smoke inside my non-smoking villa, making it uninhabitable by me until it cleared.

ok, to each their own. I just can't see telling someone they can't smoke outside. And I don't smoke.

Uh, your guide will tend to tell you what you want to hear. I suggest you call Member Services instead.

The OKW balconys seem kind of "indoors" with their roof and ceiling fans and lights etc. I consider it another room. I would NOT feel that same way at the hotel type resorts, because I usualy refrain from going out onto those kind of balconys for that very reason. They do seem more open and available for smoking.

OT ??? Local senior citizen highrise just sustained heavy damage, several floor ruined & all had to be evacuated due to 1 gent sneaking a smoke on his balcony...don't ask me how it migrated inside but...

I'm an ex-smoker, so I can see both sides of smoking but, bottom line is NON-smoking means just that, no smoking in that unit - which includes the balcony.

One of the few things I didn't like about most recent trip was sitting on balcony of WLV enjoying morning cup of coffee & smelling the guy upstairs' stinky cigar odor waifting down....yeech.

How about a nice leisurely stroll to fully enjoy that smoke?

Last June when we checked into SSR my wife asked for a smoking room. We were told at the front desk that there were non available and to just onto the balcony. And she wasn't the only one using the balcony to smoke. So I guess all balconies are smoking.

Nope. That's not the case. Smoking is allowed on balconies. My DH enjoys an occasional cigar on the balcony.

I don't know why people think they can control the outside air, too. Jeez!

We could tell someone had been smoking on the enclosed bedroom balcony of our BWV 1-bd last October. (Yes, it retained the smell.) We weren't thrilled but we also weren't all that upset - we were glad they hadn't been doing it inside the villa.

I used to smoke (never at the resorts, tho.). I didn't realize how "un-magical" it smelled until, as a non-smoker, I stood next to someone smoking on a balcony next door. Blech.

DisFlan

I don't want to get into the smoking non-smoking debate but I stay at non-smoking rooms because of sons allergies and asthma and have found make shift ashtrays on the balconies more then once and when I questioned the front desk about this they stated it was ok for people to smoke on the balconies.

Okay then - If your dear husband is the one choosing to pollute the air with his cigar smoke, who's in control then?

Obviously you think you control the air rink. You made the comment about having a supersoaker for anyone that smokes. Personally I don't smoke, but if I did and you tried that with me. There would be a real problem

Then you get the point that both are offensive. Lock and load.
