Not ALL non-smokers are bothered by second hand smoke. I don't think they are the ones complaining here. I on the other hand am physically bothered by smoke and lingering smoke smells so therefore when asked for my opinion, I don't mind giving it. And I don't care how hot and sweaty it is I would never and could never stand around people who are smoking period! :sunny:

FWIW and despite my prior post on hipocracy, me too!

...as i read you, you are suggesting that this respect thing is a one-way thing; and that non-smokers need not have any respect for smokers...can't buy that...you have an affliction - the smoker has an addiction...both parties here seem to suffer from some sort of disability and need to accommodate each other's affliction; like we tell our kids - work it out together!...
This is not a 50/50 issue. One has a medical condition and one has an addition, they are different, both bad but different. There are certainly medical issues that can come from smoking, both direct and second hand. If smoke didn't travel like it does, I'd agree with you a lot more. Any compromise needs to include a reasonable expectation that non smokers will not be exposed, period. That means no smoking in the vicinity where non smokers are expected to be or in or around the units that are designated as such. BTW, it's not just smoking, there are other issues that come up. At work, we ban popping popcorn and having most foods in general in many areas of the building due in part to he smells. We also ban smoking ON PROPERTY as do many work places now days and if they violate that rule, they are gone.

Huh? This sounds funny....

Why does it sound funny? My mother hates the smell of cigarettes and asked my father never to smoke in the house and he agreed. I don't see why that's unusual, I think it's just considerate. Now, my father did smoke in his car. That's why whenever our family went some place together, we took my mom's car. My neighbor does not smoke in his house either-wife hates it, kids hate it. I see him every night out on his deck smoking, even in January!

The growing trend of smoke-free hotels is spreading to Disneyland.
All 2,224 rooms at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., will be smoke-free on March 1, says Disney Vice President Rob Doughty. Last month, Westin became the first big chain to adopt such a policy, banning smoking throughout its 77 U.S., Canadian and Caribbean lodgings.

Disney is making the move because of "steadily declining requests" for smokers' rooms at the three Disneyland hotels at the resort, Doughty says. Only 35 rooms for smokers have been reserved through 2010

I got on here to post this article but you beat me to it. I can only hope that WDW is not far behind...smjj

It is inconsiderate for a smoker to smoke in a non-smoking room - People are inconsiderate - no doubt about it - absolutely agree 100%. Smoker should smoke only in designated areas only-if there is a designated area then that is your right as a smoker to use the area. Now, and, we have all seen it happen - the non-smoker walks by and smells the smoke from the area where smokers have the right to be and then - there they go -waving their hand, coughing, mumbling, and mouthing off about the smokers. If you see a group of people in an area why do you even bother going near the area? There are always going to be the perfect people on a crusade to change the world-you have people being considerate yet the do-gooders just can't seem to mind their own business! And, you all know who you are . No-one should be smoking in areas unless they have been designated as just that a Smoking Area.

I hope this happens in Flordia!!! I think the trend is there with the no smoking in FL restaurants. It certainly makes staying at a Westin much more appealing to me also. :)

Don't want to hijack this thread by any means, but just want to say this cause I am thrilled.
I had been a smoker for 19 years. And finally decided to quit!
I have been on the Nicorette system since Monday and am doing very well. I am taking the 12 week system, as I want to make darn sure when I am off the Nicorette that I don't go back to smoking.
Just wanted to get that out of my system, thanks for listening :thumbsup2

To heck with the thread, congratulations, that is wonderful. We wish you luck.

athenna...good luck, and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

On another "hijacking the thread" note...I think the number of people who smoke in an area is definitely regional. We just moved from AZ to TX (DFW), and Oh my goodness.....there are a LOT of smokers here!!!

Last Friday evening, I took my dd to see "Curious George" and the theatre was full of children and parents. A very nice lady sat next to me, and by the time the movie had ended, I was really congested (and, I am not too sensitive to smoke). She must've been a really heavy smoker, because all of her clothes (she had on a leather jacket) and just "her person" smelled of stale cigarette. I leaned over as far as I could, and put my head on my husband's jacket to try to get some air other than "stale cigarette", but it really was awful.

I had not been around someone who smelled like that in years. I would seriously rather sit by someone who had bad B.O., than someone who smelled of "stale cigarettes". No offense, but smoking really is a nasty habit...it changes the way your body smells. :crazy2:

Congratulations Athenna!! I wish you the best of luck!

One of my husband's most favorite thing to do on vacation is have a cigar overlooking the canal at WDW after a long day at the parks.

He certainly would never smoke inside any of the villa's, however if we are lucky enough to get a canal view at OKW, can he have his cigar while sitting on our deck?

Please no flames....just a question so as not to offend anyone while we are there. He of course would be very cognizant of anyone on nearby balconies and would not even light up if others were outside.

Thank you!

The problem with smoking a cigar on a balcony, of course, is that you have no control over where the smoke blows. You could be very aware of the people around you that you can see from your balcony, but the smoke might easily drift somewhere that bothers someone very much, and you would never know it. I think smoking a cigar is just too risky, as it is SO strong and so bothersome to many people.

Now if it were me next door to you, I'd say smoke away, because the smell of a cigar brings back very fond memories of my stepdad. But I suspect most peoeple will say to keep the cigars to a minimum.

Your husband sounds like he is reconginizes that his cigar smoke is offensive to others. I enjoy a cigar on vacation as well and I love walking the beaches at HH and VB with a cigar. In fact, grilling out on the point with a drink and at sunset is great at HH. When at WDW I usually walk around the lake at Yacht club and Boardwalk. In fact, the bridge connecting YC and BW is a favorite spot and less crowded to view the fireworks.

I would suggest if your husband hears voices and activity in the area of the balcony.......take a walk on the golf course. BTW, there is a great cigar store in Downtown Disney.

Good luck

DH loves the Cigar shop at DTD! :thumbsup2

He's already mentioned that it's one of our first stops at DTD.

Our last trip my DH and DBil sat on one of the benches overlooking the canal at POR. They enjoyed their cigar's while watching the boat to DTD go by. In fact, the boat driver had a great time joking with them as he drove by. Kept saying 'Are you guys STILL there?', 'Isn't it time for bed?'...and so on....they really enjoyed that quiet time at the end of a really long day in the parks.

Anybody know if there are benches overlooking the canal at OKW, like at POR?
If so, it seems that would be a better place than the balcony!

If there were benches on the canal (and I don't know of any) I would say smoke away, but I would probably have to call the font desk if someone smoked a cigar on a balcony of a building I was in. There are other outdoor areas that might be apropriate though.

As long as he is on the deck he can smoke the cigar.

What would you be calling the front desk for?
