For Two People - Why Would You Want A 1BR?

One of the most pleasant surprises from our recent VWL trip was finding out how nice and spacious the Studio units are. Compared to what we are used to - regular rooms - the Studios far exceeded my expectations. There was plenty of room and the little kitchenette was all we really needed. So I guess I'm changing my thoughts some. For many future trips it will just be DW and myself and I'm thinking that a Studio will really be all we need rather than a 1BR. By doing this we really save on points. If there are just two of you - which do you prefer a Studio or a 1BR and why?

I think it depends on why you are on the trip and/or how long you are staying. It is pretty luxurious to be able to spread out in the living room area -- maybe even watch two seperate TVs. The jacuzzi tub, the in-room w&d and full kitchen all have their advantages. On the other hand, if you are primarily going to be running around to the parks or on a 1-3 night trip, I agree that very often the studio is plenty big enough. A studio is also good when you are trying to conserve points, especially at high point times like Premier season.

Even two people might want a real kitchen with a real refrigerator (ice cream!), a washer & dryer, a nice spacious bathroom and a king-size bed!

Also some people may only want to (or be able to) go once a year, so saving points by staying in a studio may not be a big issue.

I think Pam is right, but we wont be staying in a studio any time soon. We did it twice with just the two of us. The first time was our first DVC trip, and we thought it was wonderful. The second time was after we had had a couple of trips in a 1, 2, and GV, and we hated it! We decided then, that we would not be using the studios again unless it was a short trip for a short time.

Well I would have to say the two person tub and shower is pretty nice . Also after a long day in the park it's nice to relax in the living room and watch t.v. The in room W&D comes in handy. If I wanted a longer stay or to visit more than once a year I'd probably book a studio and be just as happy. Susan

I think that is where I'm coming from. We have 150 points and am having to figure out how to get the most stays we can out of those points. By staying in a Studio we can do two things a year (like a week at WDW and a week at HHI, if you stay during the low point seasons). Sure the W&D would be nice. I doubt we would use the kitchen for any cooking (I like to eat out too much). As far as the jacuzzi, that's another thing I'm not much into. I quess it's different things attract different kinds of folks. That is why DVC is so great.

My DH feels the same way, but he so much prefers the real shower to the shower in the tub. I have to agree with him on that one too. I have never liked showers that are part of the tub either. When it is just the two of us, we don't eat in much for anything other than breakfast either, but we love having the extra room of the living room and the deck. DH often sets his computer up in the living room, so it becomes his office!

It is just the 2 of us, but give me a one bedroom every time. i like the separate bedroom (I'm more a morning person and DH likes to stay up later and read) - the separate room comes in handy.

I like having a washer/dryer in the unit - I can pack less and it comes in handy.

I love having a full kitchen. No I'm not cooking every meal on every trip, but it is great to have a full fridge with icemaker, microwave, etc.

The jacuzzi tub is great for a soak after a long day as well.

We've stayed in a studio at VWL and I just didn't care for it.

We knew we would love the one bedrooms after the tour so that is what we bought points for.

While we most often stay in studios - we can visit more often that way, and that's really our bottom line - we really enjoyed our recent stay in an OKW 1 BR. Talk about feeling pampered...laundry right there, jacuzzi whenever we wanted it...real plates, pots, bakeware....it was just so nice.
Yes, we will still use studios. But we are now including a 1BR at least once a year.

I like studios,too....

however I not only miss the whirlpool tub, the full kitchen, the washer and dryer in the room, but the full size patio/balcony at OKW - I have had many meals out here when staying in a 1 or 2 bedroom.....

however with studios I can go more often and share my points with friends and family - I can't do this if I stay in a 1-bedroom for most of my trips.

look at HH in the Adventureland season - 6 points for a studio - the weather can be a little cold - but the Dec we went you could still go swimming....

The King size bed in the 1bdrm's alone is a great reason for us. We also like having the jacuzzi tub and laundry room and all the extra space -- of course if you're trying to conserve points though, I agree the studio would be the way to go but when we stay in a studio we always long for the 1bdrm

Two people are also not always "close" enough to share a room. If you are a single parent traveling with a teenager, throwing the teenager on the sofabed and having your own space might be a trip saver!

We're with Scoootch on that one. The king sized bed. That is what we sleep on at home, so on vacation we want at least what we are used to!

We also enjoy the full kitchen, laundry in room and jacuzzi.

We also bought 150 points with the intention of staying in the studios at least half the time, but we really did not like it that much and did an add-on.

We've been talking about it since we just returned from a wonderful 2 night BCV stay in a studio. We've decided that we'll try this, 2 nights in a studio, but more than that we go for a 1 bedroom. I like to read and DH likes to watch TV, we can compromise for 1-2 nights but more than that, if it's going to feel like "home" we each need to do our own thing. The jet tub, full kitchen and w/d don't come into the picture for us. Our only 4 night experience was in an inn room at VB, and we've already decided to go for a 1 bedroom for us for Memorial Day weekend '05.

Living in a 100 year old row home (It's not fancy enough to be a 'townhouse'), I think a big part of the of the 1BR attraction for both of us is the huge bathroom and large kitchen work area as well as the seperate rooms. The studios, even the ones at OKW, just feel too much like a hotel room to have that 'homy' feel.

Being something of a minority here, we also use the kitchen a lot. Since we eat out a lot at home due to 1) good restaurants and 2) lack of time, eating out isn't a special thing for us and actually having the time and room to cook is a bonus for me.

Oh...and two TV's means I can watch the DVC propaganda channel as much as I want without having someone steal the remote from me.

Being a party of one I hadn't thought about the problem of excessive closeness with a party of two. But! I have to point out that all DVC's have public living rooms that are quite pleasant to sit in, relax and enjoy...maybe meet some one from Alaska. I can't see how the w/d would ever be a factor. There are just enough towels to make it to T&T for two...and if not you'd only have to go to the laundry once.

I could see the refridgerator becoming a factor.

OT the last time I was at DVC I travelled with friends who stayed at AKL (and so did I later). Talk about inconvenient! They kept their breakfast and snacks on top of the tv console and it seemed like their stuff was everywhere. Despite the roomy size of a semi-deluxe room I felt cramped whenever I went over there. And when I moved myself I kept all my junk under tight control just to keep from feeling claustrophobic...the maid actually complemented me on how neat I was! (and believe me I'm a normally a slob).

At the same time I have never stayed in a one bedroom...anywhere. I usually wind up in a two bedroom in a non-Disney vacation. I can't quite picture why I would want a one bedroom even with two people...with the exception of OKW.

When we used to fly to our travel destinations, we became accustomed to living out of one carry-on bag for clothing per person. Since we still maintain that level even if we drive, having a w/d in the room is nice...throw the laundry in and leave/sleep, dry when we wake/return and we're good to go. I'll admit the laundry room can be a place to chat with other people (usually Moms), but it is more convenient to have it in the room.

We were just discussing this for the first time yesterday. After 10 years, not everyone wants to go everytime. So, we were looking at points for a studio and thinking what a good idea. As far as the whirlpool, hardly use it. Occasionally the oven or stove. Laundry room gets the most work out. But that's for long stays. If the two of us can go for 3 or 4 days, and stay at a different VC, then it sounds like a great idea for us.
