? For those who have sold on Craig's List

:thumbsup2 I've actually sold 2 cars through CL. I was very honest, told ALL the flaws, gave accurate descriptions of both, and said "Cash Only". When they called (on my cell), we agreed on a time to meet at our home, told them my dh would be home, and told them if they weren't here at that time, that I would meet with the next caller's time. I really wasn't worried, we have 3 police that live in our neighborhood and they're always patrolling. Both times? I sold to the first people that came to both appointments!

2 cars whow! Thats awesome!

I love when people call and follow through. Right now clothes arent selling. So many people have post that they keep renewing cause their kids clothes arent selling. Our entertainment took a while to sell too.

I had two interesting responses like cute item, are those still for sell and one email had "?" i felt like responding back with a "?"

The parking lot of our town's police department.

For furniture, I move things into the basement or driveway so they're not coming in the house, and only have them come over when my big husband is home.

with the big items we sold, luckily everyone seems ok. They are only allowed in the garage and we lock the door that leads into the house. When they leave dh gives the secret knock so we know everything is ok and to open the door-lol! I usually peek out the window. I also tell him to cover up his tools and anything else someone might want to steal. I always get worried a Clister could come back when we are at work and rob us. Everyone seemed ok but we do keep their email and phone number in our email

I also tell dh they arent allowed in to use the bathroom. I've had yardsales where 2 people have asked if they could use the bathroom...sorry its being remodeled

I'm currently selling on CL now. If its lil items Dh meets them down the street at a store or gas station. Bigger items they come to the house before dark.

We've sold several larger items with no problems. I also sold a bag of dd's clothes. What I've been running into lately for smaller items is the person lives 2 cities away and they want me to meet them 1/2 ways which would be a 20-25 min drive. I havent done that, not worth it. I would ask for gas but worried they would be a no show. If you do this how much gas do you charge?. Not sure if i would do this unless I had an errand in that area but I find it kinda rude that they dont wanna drive to location.

any thought on this? do any of you run into this?

what dives me crazy are the people who email several times like they are interested, give you a number and you talk to them or text or exchange, a set up time is arranged and they dont show up or call:mad:
I usually tell them to call before they leave or i wont show up

We had someone in Sacramento interested in something we had listed, but he wanted it delivered...... We told him we would drive it to him but it would be an additional charge for our time and gas (we are 40-60 min from Sacramento, depending on where exactly he was). He asked to wait but then never contacted us again so we assume he didn't want the item. I won't drive more than 10-15 minutes for something we are selling on CL and I wouldn't ask anyone to deliver to me either.

Those responses are likely spam, when we get replies like that we simply delete them.

Just a quick FYI that this thread is from 2011, it's not a new one. :)

We sell Saltwater corals on CL, we have to have people come to the house to see them in the fish tank(s), otherwise no one would buy anything because they are all closed up and you can't see what they look like......my rule is DBF must be home and all contact is done through him. We don't provide our address until the person is on their way.

There are two shopping center parking lots I use depending on where my buyers are coming from. We're in a small out-of-the-way town, so if the buyer is local I meet at the grocery store but if they are coming from suburbia I'll meet at a Meijers closer to the expressway.

I don't really sell much on CL anymore, though, since discovering that my town has a 'swap' group on Facebook. Many CL buyers lose interest because of how far away we are or just no-show at the arranged time, so selling to people who live locally is much easier.

New to Craigslist. Looking at selling items. Have a question: Do you know if you can list and item in 2 different catergories? Also if anyone has any suggestions of helpful hints for a 1st timer.

Thanks

When choosing a meeting location, I suggest making it close to an ATM machine! I have had people not bring enough money or arrive with a check. :headache:

I had a guy buying something for $75, went to an Old Navy parking lot with my Mom to meet him - 25 min drive for me, but fit into our evening plans; he was traveling 45 min. First thing he says is "you take $60". WHAT! I said "no, I have other offers after you- so $75 or nothing." Then he said "well, I only brought $60". Luckily we were right across the street from an ATM machine. I had a very nice lady email me earlier that if I lowered the price to $60 to let her know, there was no way I was giving it that guy for $60!

Dont you just hate that! I had one lady email back and forth. Decide i would not meet her 1/2 way or reduce it by $10. A week later i posted more stuff. She contacts me and wants both Lots and says she will be driving out this way. Well its not my way so she wanted me to meet her at a point where she wouldnt have to back track 10-15 min. Dunno how it came up but then she says well i need to look at it all cuz i dont know if i want all of it? I email back and it says its a LOT and wont be split up. Then she says well what size are the pants :/ that will tell me if i want them.
I emailed her back and said no deal! Good luck!

Set up an email just for craigs List because you will get a lot of spammers.
You will deal with emails that dont go anywhere and you'll get some that follow through, just dont click on any links that come in emails

I got rid of 2 Lots yesterday. These 2 Lots were 2 that i thought wouldnt sell so ya never know what people r looking for.

Because we live on a small island, we're okay with having people come to our home for large items/live items (we were selling our guppy babies for awhile since we just had too many). Though when we lived in the SF Bay Area we were also alright with having people come to the home to pick up items, but we don't have much that's valuable for them to take and roommates on different shifts so didn't have any fears about security. Either that or I'm just not paranoid enough.

Otherwise most people prefer that you meet in the middle for small items like tickets, etc. I usually pick a Starbucks because then I don't feel odd standing around and waiting for a stranger ... trying to avoid that "blind date" feel except for money. :rotfl2:
