I was wondering how the points are paid for. Meaning...if I buy points from someone, do I pay for the entire amount up front, or pay a deposit (non-refundable, I would assume), then pay the balance sometime before the reservation?

You don't really "buy" points and only the DVC member can make or alter the reservation for you. Having said that, when I rent points that are fairly close to the date of the vacation, I do ask for the entire amount. If the reservation is several months away, I ask for one-half down and the other half at least 45 days prior to the date of arrival to allow enough time for the check to clear the bank and still be within my window of cancellation without penalty to my points should the renter not pay the full amount or if the check isn't good for whatever reason.

Every one does things differently and some do ask for the entire amount early. As for whether a deposit would be refundable, that too could be negotiated and may depend on how close the points involved are to the end of the member's "use year" and if those points could still be "banked" into the next use year. It's whatever arrangement is worked out between the rentee and renter and what both feel comfortable with. If this is your first experience renting points, I would encourage you to ask for references from the DVC member if they've rented before. This could be their first time renting however; everyone has to start somewhere.

Hope this helps to answer your question.

Thanks for the info. I did mean to say 'rent' rather than 'buy'! The reason I'm asking is because we want to rent points for an August 10-15 studio at BCV. We are in the process of selling our home and want to use the proceeds to pay for the bulk of the points. However...I'm afraid if we wait two months to rent, a studio at BCV won't be available!
